<strong>Manitoba</strong> Men’s <strong>Curling</strong> Provincial Championship and Qualifying ReviewCommitteeThe Committee that took part involved all level of competitors and an equal mix from thecity of Winnipeg and rural <strong>Manitoba</strong>. The members were:Randy Dutiaume (Winnipeg), Justin Richter (Beausejour), Resby Coutts(Winnipeg), Wilf Peters (Steinbach), Shane Kilgallen (Winnipeg), Chris Jensen(Grand Marais)ProcessA survey was sent out to over 500 competitors from the last 4 years. Competitors wereasked 6 basic questions in order to identify any issues not already identified by theBoard, to confirm issues already identified by the Board, and to provide positive andnegatives to the current championship and qualifying process.Survey questions consisted of the following:1) Why does (or did) your team compete in the qualifying process?2) What do (or did) you like about the current qualifying process?3) What do (or did) you not like about the current qualifying process?4) What do (or did) you like about the current provincial championship structure?5) What do (or did) you not like about the current provincial championshipstructure?6) Other thoughts or comments?The Committee reviewed results of that survey, along with competitor’s numbers. TheCommittee discussed the positives and negatives of the current championship formatand the current qualifying format. In addition the Committee reviewed varioussuggestions for championship and qualifying formats as put forward by competitors.The Committee also reviewed the goals of the championship and qualifying process.After completing the above process the Committee has put forward the followingrecommendation for review and feedback. After reviewing feedback and commentsfrom stakeholders any agreed upon changes will be made, a final recommendation putforward to the Board of Directors for approval. Any planned changes or implementationwould take place for the 2011-2012 season.Championship GoalsThe following goals were identified by the Board of Directors of Curl<strong>Manitoba</strong> and wereconfirmed by Committee.Excellence-ensuring teams that win MB will allow us to achieve consistent,predictable and sustainable national resultsEqual Opportunity to participate-an equitable system that provides all <strong>Manitoba</strong>nwith the opportunity to compete to go onto provincials


Developmental-opportunity for curlers to develop their skills/test themselvesagainst other curlersMarket the Game-to use provincials as an opportunity to market and promote thegameOpportunity for HC to make money-to run championship that allow host to makemoney to contribute to their financial stabilityRecognition of curlers-opportunity for curlers to receive recognition through theirperformances for the skills and abilitiesFinancial support for Curl<strong>Manitoba</strong>-to use the championships as an avenue inwhich to raise funds for the Curl<strong>Manitoba</strong> to contribute to our financial stabilityChampionship formatThe Committee recommends that the following• that the Championship remains at 32 teams• the draw format stay the sameRationaleThe current format meets the needs and is enjoyed by the majority of competitors whoprovided feedback. The format is accomplishing the goals as outlined above.Other recommendations regarding the ChampionshipProvide mentorship to younger curlers by some of <strong>Manitoba</strong>’s veteran curlers to assistthe younger curlers competing at the Safeway Championship for the first, or secondtime. Mentorship could include face-to-face time and or cheat sheets on strategy, andreading arena. Run a “School of Rock” in the host community to create more interestwith youth curlers.


Qualifying ProcessThe Committee recommends the following changes to the qualifying processBerths Awarded to16 SportregionsRationale and recommendationThe current format of zones to be changed to mirrors thealready existing sport regions in <strong>Manitoba</strong>. This changewould meet the following goals:Excellence-would result in larger competitions t<strong>here</strong>bymaking it more difficult to get out of a region, increasingthe likelihood that the best teams would make it out ofeach regionEqual opportunity-maintains the opportunity for all area’sof <strong>Manitoba</strong> to be represented at Provincials and allowscompetitors to compete without having to travel extensivedistancesDevelopmental-provides an opportunity for competitors totest themselves against other competitors who theymight not have in the pastOpportunity for host club to make money- by creatingsingle larger bonspiels it will make the host club(s) busierproviding more financial benefits to the club and creatingmore of an event like atmosp<strong>here</strong>.Two (2) spots would be awarded to each of the followingSport regions in <strong>Manitoba</strong>, Norman (2), Parkland (2),Westman (2), Central (2), Eastman (2), Interlake (2) andfour (4) spots to the Winnipeg sport region.


Berths Awarded to5 MCA Men’sBonspielRationale and recommendationThe berth’s remain an important part of the MCA Men’sBonspiel and provide the last chance opportunity forthose teams that have not qualified. Also provides abetter opportunity for the club curler to earn a spot. Inaddition more spots could be allocated as opposed tosimply working the way down a CTRS or MCT list.Excellence-as the world’s largest bonspiel it is verydifficult to win a spot out the bonspiel. This difficultyincreases the likelihood top teams will win spots.Equal opportunity-open to anyone in the Province.Developmental-provides an opportunity for competitors totest themselves against other competitors who theymight not have in the past. Provides an opportunity forcompetitors who might not normally compete for a spotthe opportunity to do so.Opportunity for host club to make money- the MCAMen’s Bonspiel is financially very good for the host clubs


Berths Awarded to3 MCT moneylistRationale and recommendation3 berths would be awarded to the top 3 teams on theMCT money list. Awarding these spots encouragesparticipation in MCT events, supports the MCTcontributing to the long-term viability of the tour.Increased participation benefits the host clubs. Thesespots would be awarded prior to regional play downsremoving top teams from the regional play downst<strong>here</strong>by increasing the opportunity for club curlers toqualify out of regional’s, which will lead to increasedparticipation in the regional’s.Excellence-awards <strong>Manitoba</strong>’s top teams with theopportunity to qualify. Ensures that teams that areplaying consistently the best throughout the year qualifyfor the Championship.Equal opportunity-MCT events are open to anyone in theProvince and they are hosted around the Province.Developmental-provides an opportunity for competitors totest themselves against other competitors who theymight not have in the past. The MCT tour is an excellentdevelopmental tool.Opportunity for host club to make money- by awardingspots to the MCT tour we hope to increase participationin MCT events. This increased participation will have apositive financial impact on the host clubs


Berths Awarded to2 MCTBonspielsRationale and recommendationBerths would be awarded to 2 events on the MCT Tour.Encourages participation in MCT events, supports theMCT contributing to the long-term viability of the tour.Increased participation benefits the host clubs. Berths Awarded to1 CTRS pointsleaderRationale and recommendationRewards those teams that are putting the time and effortinto competing at events across Canada allows the hostcommittee to be able to market the event earlier byknowing who is in it.Excellence-awards <strong>Manitoba</strong>’s top teams with theopportunity to qualify. Ensures that teams that areplaying consistently the best throughout the year qualifyfor the Championship.Equal opportunity-Any team in <strong>Manitoba</strong> who commitsthe resources to competing throughout Canada and theWorld has the opportunity to compete for the spotDevelopmental-provides an opportunity for competitors totest themselves against some of the top competitors inthe world.Opportunity for host club to make money- by being ableto market the returning champion the host committee canstart marketing earlier.1 MCT TourChampionRewards those teams that are putting the time and effortinto competing at events across <strong>Manitoba</strong>.Excellence-awards <strong>Manitoba</strong>’s top teams with theopportunity to qualify. Ensures that teams that haveproven they can win at the top level qualify for theChampionship.Equal opportunity-Any team in <strong>Manitoba</strong> who commitsthe resources to competing throughout <strong>Manitoba</strong> has theopportunity to compete for the spotDevelopmental-provides an opportunity for competitors totest themselves against some of the top competitors inthe <strong>Manitoba</strong>.


Berths Awarded to1 BrandonBonspielRationale and recommendationBerth will be awarded to the Brandon Men’s Bonspiel.Located in South Western <strong>Manitoba</strong> w<strong>here</strong> a substantialnumber of teams reside.Excellence-awards <strong>Manitoba</strong>’s top teams with theopportunity to qualify.Equal opportunity-Event is open to anyone in theProvince.Developmental-provides an opportunity for competitors totest themselves. Provides an opportunity for competitorswho might not normally compete for a spot theopportunity to do so.Opportunity for host club to make money- the berthattracts competitors to the bonspiel helping the host clubfinancially1 At largebonspielBerth will be awarded to one at large bonspiel in<strong>Manitoba</strong>. This could be an existing bonspiel or a newlycreated bonspiel.Equal opportunity-Event would be open to anyone in theProvince.Developmental-provides an opportunity for competitors totest themselves. Provides an opportunity for competitorswho might not normally compete for a spot theopportunity to do so.Opportunity for host club to make money- the berthattracts competitors to the bonspiel helping the host clubfinancially.

Provides an opportunity for competitorswho might not normally compete for a spot theopportunity to do so.Opportunity for host club to make money- the berthadditional berth could attract additional competitors to thebonspiel helping the host club financiallyOther recommendations regarding the QualifyingThat Curl<strong>Manitoba</strong> work with one of the Bonspiels with a berth be it an MCT event,Brandon Bonspiel, and or at large bonspiel to develop an event that has “Arena” ice in acurling rink and uses the services of one of <strong>Manitoba</strong>’s top icemakers and theCurl<strong>Manitoba</strong> rocks to allow competitors the opportunity to compete in an event prior tothe Championship under the same conditions a the Championship. This event would bean excellent developmental tool and would help increase the level of competition at theChampionship itself.That the format be reviewed on an ongoing process and that the berth allocation,especially for the region be reviewed on a yearly basis.
