Ourstudent demographics are as diverse as ourteach<strong>in</strong>g staff.Students <strong>in</strong> Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD come from a varietyof economic sett<strong>in</strong>gs. Seventy-three percentof our students are classified as be<strong>in</strong>geconomically disadvantaged.Westfield Road. Approximately 4,000 of those employeesare teachers.Teacher SalariesIn 2005, Ald<strong>in</strong>e teachers enjoyed a 3%pay <strong>in</strong>crease. This follows a 2004 pay <strong>in</strong>creaseof 4%. First-year teachers <strong>in</strong> Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD enjoyone of the highest salaries <strong>in</strong> Texas (top 1%),and w<strong>it</strong>h cr<strong>it</strong>ical need stipends, many enjoy aneven higher start<strong>in</strong>g salary. Over the past tenyears, our base salary for a start<strong>in</strong>g teacher has<strong>in</strong>creased more than 61%. Our HistoryHow did we get our name?There are many stories about how Ald<strong>in</strong>egot <strong>it</strong>s name. Nobody is certa<strong>in</strong>, but manybelieve the name orig<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> the 1800’swhen the Campbell family owned a hotel andstore near the current location of the M.O.Campbell Center. As tra<strong>in</strong>s stopped near thestore and hotel to sw<strong>it</strong>ch cars, people on thetra<strong>in</strong> could take a break and eat at the hotel.The conductor announced this by shout<strong>in</strong>gthrough the cars call<strong>in</strong>g “All D<strong>in</strong>e!”Our Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gsThe first school <strong>in</strong> Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD was a smallwooden build<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>it</strong>h just two rooms. Asmore students moved <strong>in</strong>to the Ald<strong>in</strong>e area,a larger, four room build<strong>in</strong>g was erected<strong>in</strong> 1912. In 1936, the first brick school wascompleted—the Marrs <strong>School</strong>. The Marrs<strong>School</strong> housed 450 w<strong>it</strong>h 14 teachers provid<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>struction.Marrs High <strong>School</strong>In 1935, settlers <strong>in</strong> the Ald<strong>in</strong>e, Brubaker,Higgs, and Westfield commun<strong>it</strong>ies held anelection and Ald<strong>in</strong>e <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong><strong>District</strong> was formed. This small commun<strong>it</strong>yof farmers cont<strong>in</strong>ued to expand and develop.Stories detail<strong>in</strong>g early life <strong>in</strong> the Ald<strong>in</strong>earea are rich w<strong>it</strong>h recollections of family fun,sports out<strong>in</strong>gs, and agriculture. Promotedas a land of opportun<strong>it</strong>y, many settlers andfarmers moved to Ald<strong>in</strong>e to grow c<strong>it</strong>rus cropsand figs.Today, Ald<strong>in</strong>e is a much different placethan <strong>it</strong> was <strong>in</strong> 1935. Few of the c<strong>it</strong>rus treesare still stand<strong>in</strong>g, and only a handful of thefig trees are left. W<strong>it</strong>h more than 58,000 students,70 build<strong>in</strong>gs, one of the largest fleet ofbuses <strong>in</strong> the country, and an annual budgetthat exceeds 1/3 of a billion dollars, Ald<strong>in</strong>eISD has grown from humble beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>toone of the largest school districts <strong>in</strong> the state.While we still embrace our her<strong>it</strong>age w<strong>it</strong>han annual livestock show, we have becomea progressive urban school district. Lawsu<strong>it</strong>s and counter lawsu<strong>it</strong>sprove costly as the board fires adm<strong>in</strong>istratorsunder contract.1959 Turnover of professional personnelreached 25%. By mid-April the districtis unable to meet <strong>it</strong>s payroll andschools are closed. In October a newschool board is elected.1960 <strong>District</strong> launched an aggressive build<strong>in</strong>gprogram.1969 Houston Intercont<strong>in</strong>ental Airportopened and serves together w<strong>it</strong>h theNorth Beltway as a catalyst for fastpacedgrowth throughout the district.1996 M.O. Cambell Educational Centeropened w<strong>it</strong>h 111,000 square feet andseats for 5,000 people.7

These wordsdescribe the magnet schools of Ald<strong>in</strong>e<strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong>.Magnet schools are schools of choice forstudents and parents. Outstand<strong>in</strong>g programsare available on 18 campuses under themes<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g International Baccalaureate, mathematics,science, perform<strong>in</strong>g and visual arts,communications, technology, Montessori,direct <strong>in</strong>struction, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, environmentalstudies, leadership, multi-language, <strong>in</strong>ternationalstudies and <strong>in</strong>ternational economics.Students—beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> pre-k<strong>in</strong>dergartenthrough high school—are eligible to enjoythese offer<strong>in</strong>gs, provided they apply. Studentsare selected through an electronic lottery.Test<strong>in</strong>g is not required.Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD is careful, however, to ensure thatall of the district’s students receive qual<strong>it</strong>yeducations, regardless of whether studentschoose to apply and are selected to attendmagnet schools. Magnet schools aren’t superiorto the educational programs offered onour trad<strong>it</strong>ional campuses, just different.Vis<strong>it</strong><strong>in</strong>g magnet schools can be qu<strong>it</strong>e stimulat<strong>in</strong>gto the senses. Dur<strong>in</strong>g a casual stroll downthe corridors of one campus, for example, thedist<strong>in</strong>ct sounds of str<strong>in</strong>ged <strong>in</strong>struments—viol<strong>in</strong>sor gu<strong>it</strong>ars—can be heard <strong>in</strong> classroomsserv<strong>in</strong>g students as young as pre-k<strong>in</strong>dergarten.On another campus, students are elect<strong>in</strong>ga mayor or build<strong>in</strong>g a bridge. Meet OurGraduatesAlberto GonzalesU.S. Attorney General,MacArthur High <strong>School</strong>,Class of 1973“Every journey beg<strong>in</strong>s w<strong>it</strong>h a step. Myjourney to the Wh<strong>it</strong>e House began <strong>in</strong>the halls of MacArthur High <strong>School</strong>.”In November 2004, Alberto Gonzaleswas named by President George W. Bushto succeed John Ashcroft as AttorneyGeneral to the Un<strong>it</strong>ed States, becom<strong>in</strong>g the first Hispanic to serveas the nation’s top law enforcement officer.Al Gonzales attended the Un<strong>it</strong>ed States Air force Academy andearned degrees from Rice Univers<strong>it</strong>y and Harvard Law <strong>School</strong>. Not long after, <strong>it</strong>became very apparent that she wasstruggl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> school. For n<strong>in</strong>e years, Jane workedfor the cable news channel and had a hand <strong>in</strong> select<strong>in</strong>g the contentfor stories of national and global importance.Jane earned degrees <strong>in</strong> Pol<strong>it</strong>ical Science and Sociology from EmoryUnivers<strong>it</strong>y <strong>in</strong> Atlanta and was hired by CNN shortly after graduation.Aaron GlennCornerback, Dallas Cowboys,Nim<strong>it</strong>z High <strong>School</strong>,Class of 1990“The Ald<strong>in</strong>e school district is diverse, andI really learned how to get along w<strong>it</strong>hdifferent k<strong>in</strong>ds of people. Beyond thedivers<strong>it</strong>y, however, the teachers and stafftaught us not to settle for less but alwayswork toward someth<strong>in</strong>g bigger <strong>in</strong> life.They told us that we should go to college,get a good job, and keep striv<strong>in</strong>g. I’m notsatisfied w<strong>it</strong>h mak<strong>in</strong>g the Pro Bowl. I’m aim<strong>in</strong>g for the Hall of Fame.”It would be difficult to <strong>f<strong>in</strong>d</strong> a school district that has produced moreprofessional athletes than Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD, and Aaron Glenn is amongthe very best that Ald<strong>in</strong>e has produced. Aaron attended TexasA&M Univers<strong>it</strong>y where he was twice named All-American and All-Southwest Conference.In 1994, he was selected as a first-round draft choice by the NewYork Jets. Aaron returned home <strong>in</strong> 2002 and jo<strong>in</strong>ed the HoustonTexans and is now a member of the Dallas Cowboys. He has been tothree Pro Bowls dur<strong>in</strong>g his 12-year career.
Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD isRecognizedAcademic AchievementAld<strong>in</strong>e <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> ranksamong the state’s high perform<strong>in</strong>g schooldistricts accord<strong>in</strong>g to data published by theTexas Education Agency (TEA). The districtearned a Recognized rat<strong>in</strong>g for six consecutiveyears. Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD was named as one offive national f<strong>in</strong>alists two years <strong>in</strong> a row forthe coveted BroadPrize for UrbanEducation.In 2006, Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD was named thew<strong>in</strong>ner of the prestigious Texas Award forPerformance Excellence (TAPE), becom<strong>in</strong>g oneof only two school districts <strong>in</strong> Texas to haveever earned the award. TAPE is an annual recogn<strong>it</strong>ionby theQual<strong>it</strong>y TexasFoundation forTexas organiza-tions that excel <strong>in</strong> performance and theapplication of qual<strong>it</strong>y and customer satisfactionpr<strong>in</strong>ciples. Students are <strong>in</strong>structed first <strong>in</strong>Spanish and once skills are learned, the skillsare transferred to the English language.W<strong>it</strong>h our model, students will gradually go from80% Spanish, 20% English <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> prek<strong>in</strong>dergartento 50% Spanish and 50% Englishmodel <strong>in</strong> third grade. Our English as a SecondLanguage (ESL) program is from pre-k<strong>in</strong>dergartento twelfth grade. In this program, studentsreceive 100% of their <strong>in</strong>struction <strong>in</strong> English. ESLteachers provide modifications and work firstw<strong>it</strong>h students on their oral and listen<strong>in</strong>g skillsand then move to read<strong>in</strong>g and wr<strong>it</strong><strong>in</strong>g skills. ESLis typically an <strong>in</strong>clusion model.A unique class that is offered <strong>in</strong> Ald<strong>in</strong>e is ourEnglish Language Inst<strong>it</strong>ute (ELI). This programruns from the seventh grade to twelfth gradeand the ESL teachers work w<strong>it</strong>h studentsfor one year <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensive English acquis<strong>it</strong>ion.Students are first learn<strong>in</strong>g oral English and listen<strong>in</strong>gskills, then concentrate on read<strong>in</strong>g andwr<strong>it</strong><strong>in</strong>g skills. Students are <strong>in</strong> these classesfrom three to five hours daily.Special EducationThe special education program <strong>in</strong> the Ald<strong>in</strong>e<strong>Independent</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> currently servesmore than 5,600 students who are identifiedw<strong>it</strong>h various disabil<strong>it</strong>ies such as autism,visual and/or hear<strong>in</strong>g impairments, mentalretardation, multiple disabil<strong>it</strong>ies, physical disabil<strong>it</strong>y,emotional disturbance, learn<strong>in</strong>g disabil<strong>it</strong>y,speech impairment, and traumaticbra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury. Today, Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD has four EC/PK centers modeled after H<strong>in</strong>ojosa EC/PK.Candee Wilson has 29 years of experience <strong>in</strong> public education. Mrs. Wilson hasserved as a pr<strong>in</strong>cipal for 17 years at three elementary schools, a Pre-K<strong>in</strong>der/K<strong>in</strong>dergartenmagnet school, and an <strong>in</strong>termediate school for 5th and 6th grade students.Wilbert Johnson has 34 years of experience <strong>in</strong> the field of education w<strong>it</strong>h all thoseyears <strong>in</strong> Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD. Throughout his tenure, he has held pos<strong>it</strong>ions as a teacher, assistant pr<strong>in</strong>cipal,and pr<strong>in</strong>cipal. Until recently, Mr. Johnson was Area Super<strong>in</strong>tendent for the Eisenhowervertical. Mr. Johnson is an active member <strong>in</strong> the Association for Supervision and CurriculumDevelopment, the Gulf Coast Career and Technology Adm<strong>in</strong>istrators Association, and theNorth Houston Greenspo<strong>in</strong>t Chamber of Commerce.27

Mentors and teachersparticipate <strong>in</strong> mentor<strong>in</strong>g activ<strong>it</strong>ies and specialtra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions throughout the school yearwhere they explore real classroom issues. TheAld<strong>in</strong>e Mentorship Program pairs new teachers<strong>in</strong> Ald<strong>in</strong>e ISD w<strong>it</strong>h experienced teachers.Typically, these mentor teachers are <strong>in</strong> thesame grade level, same subject areas, andthe same school. Mentor teachers are handselected by the build<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>cipal. The Ald<strong>in</strong>eMentorship Program focuses on six primarygoals.
