Changes ... to the staffWe welcome many new staff aswell as pupils this term. Havingsaid farewell to departing staff at theend of last term, including Mr Grundywho had spent most of his teachingcareer here, we have a long list ofteachers who have joined us.As many of you will have gleanedfrom the local and national press (seepage 5 ) we have fifteen teachers newto the profession. In the Sciencedepartment Miss Watts, Miss Hall, DrCoultous and Miss Mitchell; in PE MrKetley; in Music, Mr Ashwood; inMaths, Miss Boomer and Mr Robson;in Languages Miss Doherty, MissKoursarou, Mrs Attwell and MrHilgers; in DT, Mr Harrow; inInformation Studies, Mr Vivian, andin English, Miss Whittle.Joining us from other schools areMiss Ramgoolam (DT), Dr Scanlon(English), Miss Ling (Geography), MissWard (History), Miss Bird (Languages),Mr Stobie (Maths), Miss Makinson(PSE / History), Ms Dryden (Head ofSpecial Educational Needs) and MrsJones (RS).Too many names?! Well, here’s aglimpse into the non-working lives ofa few of them.Dr Coultous got her doctorate inchemistry form Durham Universityand before teaching worked in anFMCG company (for the uninitiated,that’s "fast moving consumer goods").Miss Boomer (pictured far right)studied at Glasgow and Exeter. Shehails from <strong>No</strong>rthern Ireland. Sheenjoys travel and hockey.Mr Hilgers (pictured centre above)has taught in France, Germany andLuxembourg and gained his Master’sdegree from Trier in Germany. Heenjoys travel and reading as well asspeaking and learning newlanguages.Mrs Attwell (pictured below left)previously worked for a Germancompany in London. She enjoyssailing and travel. Like MissKoursarou (pictured beneath her) shelists chocolate as one of her passions,so pupils will know what to get thesetwo members of staff for Christmas.Miss Koursarou works off the caloriesas she plays netball, and beforecoming to The <strong>Ashcombe</strong> she taughtin France.Six of our new staffMrs AttwellMiss KoursarouMr HilgersMr RobsonMiss Bird taught elsewhere inSurrey prior to her move here. Shetoo likes travel and aims to run amarathon one day.<strong>No</strong>t surprisingly, Mr Ketley(pictured below right) plays cricket,football and rugby to a high standard.He enjoys reading books by BillBryson. Changes ... to the environmentWhilst much internal paintinghas taken place and someshifting of locations, the most eyecatchingtransformation has takenplace outside the Sixth Form Centrewhere the grassed area has beenlevelled and bricked over to form anopen piazza-style area. Picnicbenches have been ordered by thePTA working party and will beerected shortly.
