3.2 Attendance and Non-Attendance
You must enrol for attendance or non-attendance each academic year.
If you neglect to do this you will lose your right to study. If you want to
continue your studies later in this case, you must reapply for the right to
study.
You can enrol for attendance for one academic year at a time by the end of
August each year. Only those enrolled for attendance are eligible to register
for courses and complete studies. If you are studying abroad or completing
your work placement or thesis, you have to enrol for attendance.
Enrolments for non-attendance are made by 27th of August (for the next
autumn term) and/or by 7th of January (for the next spring term).
You can enrol for non-attendance for a period of one semester, but not
for longer than for a maximum of two academic years. If you serve in the
military or you are on maternity, paterinity, parental, nursing or sick leave,
you should enrol for non-attendance. Notifi cation of the reason for nonattendance
is not required.
You cannot register on non-attendance for a shorter time than one
semester. E.g. if you are taking maternity/paternity leave in November, you
must enrol for attendance for the whole autumn semester and study the
fi rst period of the autumn semester. The fi rst non-attendance semester in
this case is the next spring semester.
8 (24) HAAGA-HELIA - Haaga Campus Guide - 2010-2011
Non-attending students
• cannot study at HAAGA-HELIA (however are allowed to attend the reexaminatios
for the courses held during the previous period, if these
are held during the period of non-attendance).
• cannot attend the work placement.
• cannot have thesis counselling.
• are not eligible for any fi nancial benefi ts related to studies.
As an absent student, you will not have the right of access to HAAGA-
HELIA IT services (user name, e-mail, WinhaWille etc.)
3.3 Student’s Guide and Timetables
HAAGA-HELIA Student’s Guide is published only in electronic format and is
available at www.haaga-helia.fi /en > Student’s Guide. The online Student’s
Guide is useful when you are planning the content and implementation of
your studies. The guide introduces the whole educational supply of HAAGA-
HELIA: the objectives, structures and contents of each Degree Programme
as well as the course availilability with detailed course descriptions. The
guide includes also the Degree Regulations there as well as information
on the practical arrangements relating to studying. Please pay particular
attention to the following items:
• General information on HAAGA-HELIA
• Studying at HAAGA-HELIA – details, rules and practices study
• About study skills and learning – in order to succeed in your studies
Timetables and cancelled courses are available on HAAGA-HELIA web
pages. You can check your own group’s timetable by choosing fi rst your
own campus and then the autumn or spring timetables, or you can fi nd
course information on all HAAGA-HELIA courses by choosing the Excel
timetable. Cancelled lessons are announced in student’s extranet.
3.4 Course Codes
Course codes consist of 9-10 symbols, for example RSS1RB001. The fi rst 3
letters of the code tells which theme is concerned. The next number tells
what kinds of studies are concerned:
• 1: compulsory core studies
• 2: compulsory professional studies
• 3: alternative study entity
• 4: alternative professional studies
• 6: work placement
• 7: thesis
• 8: free-choice studies
The following combination of letters, after those 4 symbols, tells to which
degree programme course belongs, e.x. the codes for Degree Programme
in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management include the abbreviation
“RB”. All degree programme abbreviations are presented in enclosure 1.
The last 3 letters separate similar subject courses from each other in the
same degree programme. There might be a letter at the end of the code,
e.g. RSS1RB001A; tells that the course is a part of some other course.
The course code can usually include an implementation number, which
distinguishes the implementations of the same course from each others
e.g. RSS1RB001A-2 and RSS1RB001A-3.
3.5 Cheating in Studies
Cheating in studies, such as cheating in examinations, copying assignments
from another person, copying an assignment directly from a source,
or such other corresponding forms of dishonesty, are strictly forbidden
at HAAGA-HELIA. In these cases study achievements for the course in
cheating are always recorded in the student’s study register.
When needed the texts written by the student may be checked through
Urkund, a web based service which helps to detect and deter plagiarism.
3.6 Course Enrolments
Students are accepted for the courses in accordance with the Degree
Regulations. You must enrol for the courses during the pre-selection or
post-selection by using the WinhaWille system. A one-week pre-selection
period is usually at the end of each term. A longer post-selection period
follows the pre-selection. Please, note that the regulations to be accepted
on a course differ during the pre- and post-selection.
After the pre-selection, some of the courses can be full and others
cancelled if there is not enough participants. Enrol only for those courses
in which you are going to participate. The degree programme manager
decides on implemented courses.
Enrolment for a course is offi cially confi rmed by attending the fi rst lesson of
the course. If you are absent from the fi rst lesson you will lose your course
place even though you have enrolled in time. The place will be given to a
student who is present. If you are anot able to attend to fi rst lesson, you
must contact the teacher in advance and give the reason for your absence
and express your willingness to attend the course.
You are informed of the acceptance for the courses through WinhaWille. In
Personal Study Plan (PSP) the Participations section includes a list of the
courses in which your enrolment has been accepted and the Enrolments
section includes those courses in which your enrolment has not been
accepted.
3.7 Course Assessment
You should study actively right from the beginning of the course and
complete the given assignments in time to ensure your learning. Familiarize
yourself with the HAAGA-HELIA Degree Regulations.
If you fail an exam during a course, you have two opportunities to try
again. If you fail also the second re-examination, all earlier study credits
related to that course are cancelled. Subsequently, the only possibility to
pass the course concerned is to enrol again for the course and repeat all
required assignments and exams. Teachers are responsible for informing
their students of the examination results three weeks from the date the
course ended or the re-examination was taken.
The teachers must archive the student’s assessed written assignments and
exams for six months after giving the grades. If you are dissatisfi ed with
your grade acontact the teacher as soon as possible as after six months he/
she does not necessarily have your materials anymore. According to the
Law concerning University of Applied Sciences, you must ask for the adjustment
to the grade within 14 days after you have received the information
about your grade.
You must check your grades regularly for being able to retake or complete
the courses failed in due time.
