Technical Data SheetLOCTITE ® 290August-2007PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONLOCTITE ® 290 provides the following productcharacteristics:TechnologyAcrylicChemical Type Dimethacrylate esterAppearance (uncured) Green liquid LMSFluorescencePositive under UV light LMSComponentsOne component - requires no mixingViscosityLowCureAnaerobicSecondary Cure ActivatorApplicationThreadlockingStrengthMedium to HighLOCTITE ® 290 is designed for the locking and sealing ofthreaded fasteners. Because of its low viscosity and capillaryaction, the product wicks between engaged threads andeliminates the need to disassemble prior to application. Theproduct cures when confined in the absence of air betweenclose fitting metal surfaces and prevents loosening andleakage from shock and vibration. The product can also fillporosity in welds, castings and powdered metal parts.Mil-S-46163ALOCTITE ® 290 is tested to the lot requirements of MilitarySpecification Mil-S-46163A.ASTM D5363Each lot of adhesive produced in North America is tested tothe general requirements defined in paragraphs 5.1.1 and5.1.2 and to the Detail Requirements defined in section 5.2.TYPICAL PROPERTIES OF UNCURED MATERIALSpecific Gravity @ 25 °C 1.08Flash Point - See MSDSViscosity, Brookfield - RVT, 25 °C, mPa·s (cP):Spindle 1, speed 50 rpm20 to 55 LMSTYPICAL CURING PERFORMANCECure Speed vs. SubstrateThe rate of cure will depend on the substrate used. TDS LOCTITE ® 290, August-2007This product is not normally recommended for use on plastics(particularly thermoplastic materials where stress cracking ofthe plastic could result). Users are recommended to confirmcompatibility of the product with such substrates.Directions for useFor Pre-assembled Threaded Parts with Thru Holes1. Prior to assembly, clean all threads (bolt and hole) with aLOCTITE ® cleaning solvent and allow to dry.2. For Thru Holes, apply several drops of product at screwand body juncture.3. Avoid touching the bottle tip to the metal surface. For Assembly1. For Blind Holes, apply several drops of the productdown the internal threads to the bottom of the holeFor Porosity Sealing1. Clean area and apply localized heat to the area toapproximately 121°C.2. Allow to cool to approximately 85°C and apply theproduct. For Disassembly1. Remove with standard hand tools.2. In rare instances where hand tools do not work becauseof excessive engagement length, apply localized heat tonut or bolt to approximately 250 °C. Disassemble whilehot. For Cleanup1. Cured product can be removed with a combination ofsoaking in a LOCTITE ® solvent and mechanicalabrasion such as a wire brush.Loctite Material Specification LMSLMS dated September-01, 1995.
