Diocesesof<strong>DERRY</strong>and<strong>RAPHOE</strong>DIOCESAN DIRECTORY 2009

Bishop’s ForewordTeamworkOne of several key values which has emerged from therecent Strategic Review in the Diocese of Derry andRaphoe is the simple statement that, “We serve in teams”.The pages which follow reveal the impressive extent towhich that statement is played out in so many facets ofdiocesan and parochial life. A wide range of Boards,Committees, Councils and other groups, the membershipof which is listed in this Directory, makes up a network ofteams in which people from all parts of the diocese cometogether and share their experience and expertise for thecommon good.Teams are stronger than the sum of their individualmembers. When a team functions well, the healthy levelsof encouragement, creativity, support and a refinement ofideas all combine to generate fresh effectiveness andachievement. We are blessed by God to have many peoplein this diocese willing to play their part in this kind ofteamwork.Canon David Crooks has again done us a great service inpainstakingly gathering, updating and collating thenames and details which combine to make this volume sovaluable as a resource and so impressive as a record ofdiocesan life. Thank you very much to our DiocesanRegistrar. The printers, DCG, and advertisers have also played asignificant part in enabling us all to have this impressiveand well presented volume available without cost to us.† Ken Derry and RaphoeFront cover: Derry & Raphoe Mothers' Union at the Mothers' Union Road Show 2008 in the City Hotel Armagh. Editor’s ForewordAt the outset, may I on behalf of us all, express our deepest sympathy to the Bishop and Mrs Good, and to their family, and to the Bishop’s Mother, on the death on New Year’s Day of the Rev’d. CanonRaymond Good, the Bishop’s Father. May the God of all comfort sustain them at this time. The Diocesan Directory over the last few years has had a theme related to one or other of theDiocesan organisations, though in 2008, the theme was the Lambeth Conference. In 2007, YouthWork in Derry and Raphoe was the theme. This year, it’s the turn of the Mothers’ Union. Sincerethanks to our Diocesan President, Mrs Jean Fox and to Mrs Kay Nesbitt for providing the lovelyphotographs of the MU in action, and the article on their activities, past and present – if you areeligible and do not join, why not?! Just look at all the MU is doing, and play your part in thiswonderful organisation. As usual, other organisations such as DRY and RDYC have reported on their activities. Any otherorganisation or group will be welcome to contribute.2008 was one of those third years, commonly called triennials, when the Diocesan Council andmembers of General Synod and all the numerous Diocesan Committees face the electorate! Many of those who have served faithfully in numerous capacities over many years have been reelected, and will continue to serve faithfully and to offer their talents, but it is really good to seea considerable number of new people who have been elected to the General Synod, and to theDiocesan Council, and to several of the other committees. They will bring new ideas and insightsto the ongoing work of the united Dioceses. It is indeed good that so many people are preparedto give time to the service of the Church. There have been several changes amongst the clergy too. Some of the old folk like myself, whohas been in Taughboyne for 25 years, just go on and on, but it’s great to see new clergy comingin, and adding their talents and skills to the team. I hope that I have managed to get all thesechanges recorded accurately. It’s hard to believe that this is now the tenth edition of Derry and Raphoe Diocesan Directory, which began in 2000, when Bishop Mehaffey asked me to set it up and edit it. It has been for mea labour of love, because I actually enjoy doing it! That enjoyment is possible because of theundeserved appreciation which clergy and people express to me. I don’t in the least mindcriticisms, and I welcome warmly any suggestions which may improve the Directory. Indeed, overthe years, there have been many suggestions, which I believe have been of great use, and whichhave made this Directory considerably better than it might have been.As usual, I am in the debt of Mr Geoffrey Kelly and Miss Sandra Wallace in the Office at theDiocesan Centre. They ensure that details of membership of the committees and boards, as wellas all sorts of other things, are accurately recorded, and they oversee the general proofing andproduction of the Directory. Nevertheless, the odd wee mistake still gets past, and I alone amresponsible! To God be the glory!David W. T. The Mothers’ UnionParenting ProgrammeBringing up a family can be a very fulfilling and enjoyable experience. However, there are times when the responsibility of being a parent isoverwhelming and the reassurance and support of others would be welcomed.Mothers Union is an organisation long associated with being committed tosupporting families and family life. In our ever changing society, Mothers’Union support for young families is readily available in the form ofparenting groups. Such groups usually meet weekly for 6-8 weeks and arefacilitated by trained Mothers’ Union parenting facilitators, volunteers, trained to national standards. These group sessions aim to equip parentswith support and skills, giving them the confidence they need to do the mostimportant job they’ll ever undertake. This is done through active learning, discussions and a sharing of ideas and experiences. Quite often parentsattending form new friendships which continue long after the plannedsessions have ended. In 2000 the Mothers’ Union funded the training of several parentingfacilitators in Ireland. Since then, these facilitators have provided invaluablesupport and reassurance to parents in our communities. In June this yearDerry and Raphoe Action and Outreach unit organised a Meeting andSharing day for parenting facilitators from 6 dioceses and their supportteams. This day celebrated the good work done by these volunteers and hada balance of sharing resources, good practices and practical suggestions ashow best to take the programme forward. It was a wonderful privilege tohave Rev. Margaret Awili, a trained parenting facilitator from NorthernUganda, with us to share her experiences of the differing role of facilitatorsin her country. The Mothers’ Union is proactive in facing the issues of the 21st century.Through the provision of parenting programmes, this organisation isencouraging and affirming parents in their role within the family.Ann OrrAction and Outreach Co-ordinator,Derry and Raphoe Diocese.Meeting and sharing day for parenting facilitators within the five Northern Dioceses whopiloted the MU Development Worker Project. helped us all focus on the great qualities of confirmation and where young people fit into the church. The weekend was held in the Share Centre, Lisnaskea. With many greatoutdoor pursuit opportunities and group activities for our young people we feel that itwas a very successful weekend.Dry has been working hard over the last year developing Sitting Duck groups andestablishing resources for the diocese to use. To date there are now 14 established SittingDucks groups with other groups in the pipeline making the number increase to 21groups. This could not be possible without the support of parishes, clergy, volunteers, young people and Gods spirit being able to move within the diocese. The Sitting DucksProgramme, we believe, is still growing in different ways throughout the diocese. Eachgroup takes on different forms of youth work, which makes the project fresh and exciting. In October last year we were able to train, (in partnership with Youthlink:NI), an OCNleadership programme for 12 leaders within the diocese who wanted to develop theirskills and knowledge in youth work. The OCN is a youth work qualification that covers awide base of all the basics. We believe for the benefit of the diocese that this is a greatand valuable resource to endorse. This year we are now halfway through the secondintake of leaders, which has grown to 18, and will be graduating in June 2009. We hopeto run the programme again in October 2009 for 20 places which mean that by June2010 there will be 50 qualified youth workers throughout the diocese who haveundergone training for the benefit of the diocese. We also had our Sitting Ducks weekend in the Corrymeela centre, Ballycastle. This wasthe best weekend we have ever run and felt a great sense of God presence surround us.Rev. Adrian McCartney challenged all of us what It means to be a Christian, faith, prayerand love. This year we will have volunteer jump worker, Julie Green, helping with the diocesanyouth work, in partnership with St. Augustine’s parish Church, Derry. We also had the launch of two important features of the diocesan youth work, first of allour Sacred Space in the diocesan office and our new website which holds all photos, event details and resources for all parishes to use.In all we have had a year of hard work and growth. This year will be harder trying tosustain growth but worthwhile. We appreciate all your help and understanding withregard to the growth of our groups and thank all who have entered in to the projects. Ifyou do want any more information please contact Shaun at the youth office forinformation and packs, if you however do not want a Sitting Ducks group please do notfeel that you can’t contact Shaun, he is there for advice in materials, safe guarding, lending of equipment and we also have a space for you to use in the Diocesan Centre. In November we had our annual big event which brought together 200 young people inChrist Church, Derry for our large gathering event called ‘Shine’. This was a hugesuccess and we really want to develop and grow this year’s event will be called‘SYNCRONICITY’. Our speaker last year was Sharon Hamill from CIYD who challengedus on how to shine in the world for God in every way possible. Our great band was AndyGood with Lesley and Nigel Caldwell. We had great dramas from Noel Boyd and AndreaIrvine and also hard hitting Testimonies from Tim Shiels from Cornerstone Church. Our thanks again to Canon McNee for letting us use the fabulous church and also hiscatering team who provided a brilliant spread for all who attended.December saw the Carols by Duck light service illuminated by the gorgeous candelabrasof Lifford parish church. The RDYC band helped us remember the true theme of theseason with thier festive singing and songs. After our mince pies and sholer we have ourtraditional trip to the local cinema which one screen is solely rented out for all whoattend the night. Every year we try our best to get a Christian based movie e.g ‘Narnia’.This year was the first year in which we hosted a Confirmation weekend. The weekendcould not have gone better with lots of new faces and leaders helping out.
