Half-yearly financial report at June 30, 2013Social responsibility andstakeholder relationsIn the A2A Group’s business model sustainability is a strategic element for seeking to achievegrowth that is balanced from an economic, social and environmental standpoint.The A2A Group published the fifth edition of its Sustainability Report in 2013. From its verybeginnings in January 2008, the A2A Group has used this tool as a means of communicatingand consolidating the results and objectives it has set and achieved in the three areas ofsustainability: economic, environmental and social responsibility.The information provided has grown over the years in terms of completeness and qualityand following a gradual approach has taken the 2012 Sustainability Report to the highestapplication level (A+) of the Global Reporting Initiative international standard.233In particular, it is worth recalling that important results were achieved in 2012.First and foremost from an economic standpoint, with distributed net global value addedexceeding 1.2 billion euro and investments made in the Group’s sectors of 353 million euro. TheA2A Group also distributed value by making purchases which arrived at a total of 687 millioneuro, of which 97% involved Italian suppliers.Excellent results were also achieved at an environmental level, with 36% of energy beingproduced from renewable sources, 99.9% of the urban solid waste collected being recoveredthrough recycling or waste to energy enhancement and the development of urban districtheating networks (with an annual increase of 11% in the volume served in the municipalities ofMilan, Brescia, Bergamo and Varese and significant energy savings and emission reductions).Differentiated collection in Milan, where the A2A Group manages urban hygiene services, roseto reach the 39% mark. In particular, as the result of using more efficient energy technologies(waste to energy, cogeneration, hydroelectric), 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 were saved.The considerable improvement in the professional accident indices is also worth emphasizing;this was achieved as the result of prevention programs which enabled a reduction of 7.7% tobe obtained in the frequency of accidents at work.Finally, 2012 also saw the success of the initiatives carried out together with the Consumers’Associations for spreading a culture of correctness in trading practices, as well asconfirmation of participation in the Global Compact and its universally accepted principles inthe areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
