Hi-Noblepage11High Priest & ProphetMembership ChairmanRay TellerSecond Quarter 2012Nobles one of my assigned dutiesas your High Priest and Prophet isMembership Chairman. This is onemonumental task.So far we have lost 27 membersto the Black Camel and only havethree candidates for our spring ceremonial. Iknow we will get some more, but we only havethirty –five days to get petitions in, and by thetime you read this it will most likely be less than15 days. To make matters worse, we have over200 nobles that have not paid their dues. Fortytwo of those are into their second delinquentyear. This is a very scary trend and it must bereversed if we are to survive as Khedive ShrineCenter. One thing we are doing is inviting all MasterMasons (and their ladies) in our jurisdiction toattend the Open House on June 1, 2012. Theletter will be mailed on April 30, 2012.“Every Shriner must havea pocket petition on themto have ready when”the need presents itself.Nobles, this is one part of our membershipbase, and we ALL must assist in bringing MasterMasons in our jurisdiction to hear our message, learn what we do, and see our units first hand. This is a first, and hope it continues inthe future. Please attend your Blue Lodges toshow we haven’t forgotten where we camefrom and also to assist in this endeavor. Lodgeambassadors, please talk this up in yourrespective lodges, and be sure to mention theupcoming Shrine events at your lodge eachmonth. The Masons and other appendant bodies(non- Masons also) should also have aninvitation to all Shrine fund raisers. There aremany Masons (and non-Masons alike) who donot know or understand our purpose and whatwe do. In addition to having fun, we must allstrive to get the Shrine message out to all people. Please visit www.khediveshrine.org for a wealthof information about our Shrine Center and theShrine in general.Every Shriner must have a pocket petition onthem to have ready when the need presents itself.Always be ready to discuss the backgroundand the benefits and joys of being a Shriner.Any suggestions or ideas to help with ourmembership decline are welcome. Please call me at 757-485-4292 or e mail email@example.com.“ISN’T IT GREAT TO BE A SHRINER”Yours in the Faith,Raymond TellerHigh Priest and ProphetMembership Chairman

Y cAPTAINJEFF dAVISDuring our journey as Shriners we getto know many of our fellow Shriners. Some we get to know better than others. As Shrinerswe work together as a unit as well as a temple. We feelthe joy and strength of gaining new members as wellas the pain and sorry of losing an existing member. It iswith great sadness that I must announce the news of thepassing of John Peters Sr. on April 3, 2012. As manyof you know, John was a loving husband and fatherand served in the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard for 26years and retired as a Master Chief Petty officer. Aftermilitary retirement, he received his engineering degreeand worked for the US Coast Guard Engineering asChief at the Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Branchof the Facilities Design and Construction Center inNorfolk and earned 28 years of Federal Civil Service.John was also a teacher his entire life. He lovedconveying knowledge to others. He taught electricalengineering subjects at Old Dominion Universityfor over 30 years in the School of Engineering. Heloved his country so much that he volunteered 16,000hours of his time as a Docent on the Battleship USSWisconsin! He was Commander of the KhediveLegion of Honor in 1986 and Past Commander ofSouth Atlantic Shrine Association Legions of Honorin 1990. He was active in the Veterans of ForeignWars and served as Post Commander of VFW Post4809, Commander of Second District, and DepartmentCommander for the State of Virginia in 1995. He helda black belt in Judo and Karate, competing acrossthe country and was State Champion in Virginia andAlaska. He went on to use his skills to teach SelfDefense Classes for Women. John began playing atrumpet when he was 13 years old and played withbands his entire life. No matter where he was stationedor lived, he was always looking for a band to playsome music. He played in several bands including theHampton Roads Metro Band and our own KhediveTemple Band. Even with his busy schedule he tooktime out to represent the band as our Band Historian. In Memory ofHi-NobleJohn Peterspage21For a number of years John wrote the Hi-Noblearticles for the band. He was one of the most dedicatedShriners I knew. John will be greatly missed by theKhedive Band. Our thoughts and prayers go out to hisfamily. As 2012 quickly passes by the Band continues tobe the best they can be. Our dance band, the “KhediveNotables,” played for Warwick Lodge’s SweetheartDance in February. A good time was had by all thatattended. Our Khedive Concert Band also played in theSaint Patrick’s Day parade and had a great time. TheKhedive Dance Band continues to grow and welcomes4 new local musicians: Jon Yates, Dan Bathe, PeterFoytik, and Jake Foytik. If you haven’t heard the bandsthen you are missing some great music! Hi-Noblepage25SwashbucklersbY scribe Phil CromartieGreetings Nobles from the Swashbucklers ofKhedive Shrine. It’s been a great year so far for ournew pirate unit, working closely with theother units of Khedive Temple in support of theirefforts and participating in as many events as wecan. Starting up a new unit is a lot of work, but weare having fun doing it. Since our parade float isstill under construction, we have managed to makeour presence known by riding in parades on ourmariners’ golf carts. At least every other month,we try to have a covered dish and fellowship gettogether, which we call a Shipwreck. We inviteBrother Masons as potential Shrine-Masons andeven Non-Masons to our shipwrecks in an effort toincrease membership in the Shrine and show themhow much fun it is to be a Shriner. Our ladies havebeen with us in nearly everything we do and are asanxious to be involved in our Shrine efforts as weare. Our first paper drive is coming up in June. Wehope to help our transportation fund with a greatdonation and to get the word out about what theShrine and Shriners Hospitals are doing. Our First Annual “Pig Pickin” will be on October7th at Khedive Shrine. There will be roasted pigwith all the fixings, so make plans to come out andenjoy some true pirate hospitality. Tickets are $15and can be purchased from any of our unit members. We still have ticketsavailable for a chanceat the Custom Golf Cartthat will is scheduled tobe raffled off at our “PigPickin”. We are onlyselling 200 tickets andwhen they are all sold,we may even draw thewinner before October,so get your ticket as soon as you can. Tickets areonly $50 for a chance to win the golf cart, valued at$6,000.We recently moved into Khedive Shrine Center. The Drum & Bugle Corps and Legion of Honorhave been gracious enough to share their meetingroom with us. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday ofthe month, with a social at 6 pm and the meeting at7 pm. We always have a great time taking care ofthe business of being Shriners. If you’re looking fora unit to join, please come visit us, you are alwayswelcome.Looking forward to seeing you all soon on thestreets and at our Shrine functions. As Cap’n Roscoe always says “If you’re nothaving fun and you’re not helping the kids, then youare probably not doing something right”.Yours in the FaithMariner Phil CromartieSecond Quarter 2012FRANKLIN SHRINE CLUBMeets 2nd Monday of Each Monthat Fred’s RestaurantALL NOBLES INVITED!Scott Seddon - PresidentRandy Dean - Secretary/Treasurer
Second Quarter 2012page26Hi-NobleTidewater Shrine ClubbY noble scott m. tranerWell the Tidewater Shrine Club has managedto stay busy and profitable for the children atthe same. We participated in the St. Patty’sday Parade and what a great time it was. Ifyou never do another parade at least go to Norfolk forthis one. We started off well fed thanks to Illustrious SirBill and his hard working crew. Than we assembled forthe parade under Noble Johnny’s able assistance. Theparade itself is so great, you can see the excitement in thechildren and even talk to them during the parade. It is nodoubt one great way of reaching the public and showinghow much we care. The Daffodil parade was not as big but we came outin full force and showed the community our worth. Thelunch at Coor street was aptly led by Noble PresidentMark Cookalong with his staunch group of supporters. Agood time was had by all and we are looking forward to areal great Christmas Parade in December. We had a very successful paper drive over the Easterweek end at the Wal-Mart in Gloucester. Noble RobParker had plenty of volunteers and we made 1395.00which became $1500.00 thanks to the generosityof President Mark. Thanks to all our Nobles whovolunteered and made this an easier event to put on.I would like to add a special note to this article.Noble David (Doc) White celebrated 50 years of beinga Mason in April. Achilles Lodge presented him his pinand certificate in front of a standing room only crowd, which included many Shriners and almost the full Divan.Being the Master of the lodge I want to thank the Divanfor helping Doc celebrate a wonderful anniversary. If youSt. Patrick’s Day Parade 3/17/2012see Doc out andabout congratulatehim.April was ourLadies night and itwas so special tosee all our beautiful ladies at dinner. We provided all theladies with roses but the roses suffered in comparison toour lovely ladies. God knows we could not accomplishhalf of the things we do without their “ Noble”assistance. Also want to give a special thank you to Asst.Rabban Randy Murphy and his special lady Debbie whoattended the dinner. The onions will be here in early May so get yourorders in now as we will sell out as usual. Unfortunately, the classic Donald Rosscourse had dressed the greens with sand the daybefore so our putts were not the best. Dressing thegreens in the spring is a necessity to prepare them forthe long hot summer. The flowers andtrees are blooming, as is our desire to workfor our Children’s Hospitals and our Temple,as we did Easter weekend. Many members of theWSC collected contributions the Saturday of Easter, and, as usual, heard some stories and testimonies fromcontributors about their personal connections they havehad with our hospital system. And, as always, it was avery worthwhile and rewarding day.In addition, the WSC had several outstandingprograms during the quarter. Of course our Februarymeeting consisted of the “interrogation” of our poor(now, even financially poor) Oriental Guide. But, NobleElwood lived yet another day to talk about it and camethrough it all with flying colors. Again, congratulationsgo out to you Elwood, and we look forward to seeing andworking with you in the years to come.In March we had a program presented by Mr. JamesA. Cameron Jr. who portrayed John Rollison (1723-1780) an eighteenth century free man of color who thruhis individual efforts became one of the richest men inVirginia. Mr. Cameron’s presentation presented manyfacts and information which are not taught in schools andwhich changed somewhat the perception we had aboutlife in the 1700’s in Virginia and the opportunities andobstructions which existed at that time for free men ofcolor. Our April program was a “powerful” one presentedby Mr. Craig Olson, the Director of Nuclear Engineeringfor Dominion Power. His presentation and the followingdiscussion, centered around the nuclear business andnuclear education and recents, and included such nonnuclear topics as the possible construction of wind-farmsby Dominion Power for the production of electricity. Itwas a very informative evening. As always, the Club has interesting, and sometimeseven entertaining, programs, and the fellowship is alwaysfun. Come see us.We meet at the Holiday Inn on Bypass Road, here inWilliamsburg, on the first Wednesday of each month. Thesocial hour begins at 6:00PM with dinner at 7:00PM.Directions to the Holiday Inn are easy. When youget to Williamsburg, take the “Camp Perry” exit off ofI-64. Hi-Noblepage41Drum & Bugle CorpsBy terry Riley Assitant DirectorThe Drum & Bugle Corps is offand running for yet another verygreat year. The 45th Annual SaintPatrick’s Day Parade on March 17th wasa huge success. What a great time!!! Theweather was beautiful, the crowd was bigand the entertainment was Priceless. The Drum & Bugle Corps heldits first fund raiser of the year for theTemple, a paper drive held at the Sam’sClub in Virginia Beach. I like to thankall the nobles that came out, worked andsupported this year’s paper drive. Weraised almost $2,400 and I’d like tochallenge the other units and clubs tomeet or beat that. The next adventure for the DrumCorps will be the annual Holland paradeon May 19th this is always a good time, asmall parade with a “Big Heart”, after theparade it’s right back to work @ the 11thAnnual Virginia Beer Festival @ TownPoint Park in Norfolk, needless to say, the19th of May will be a busy day for theDrum CorpsOn a sad note, the Drum Corps losttwo of its long time members this quarter,Joe Kelly and Tony Versic. Pleasekeep their families in your thoughtsand prayers. Remember to never forgetour military personal serving in harm’sway all over the world and our ShrinerChildren as well.We would like to invite all nobles tocome out and join the Drum Corps onMondays, 7:00 PM.As Tony Versic would always say…….“WE HAVE FUN”May God bless you and your familyduring this upcoming year.We are The and always will be The“Beat of Khedive”.Potentate’s Ball 2/25/2012Fish Fry 4/22/2012Fish Fry 4/22/2012Second Quarter 2012Motor PatrolbY captainjohn howeIt’s great to be back in the saddle, so to speak, and practicing as a unit again. Last year we weredisappointed that we couldn’t compete at MASA orSASA due to a couple of early-season accidents and otherpersonal issues that got in the way, but this year we’refully recovered, bikes reassembled and repainted, and weare ready. We’re all excited about the upcoming opportunitiesfor competition at Imperial, MASA and SASA. Westarted our drill practice at Lake Taylor High School inApril, and will be meeting there at 6:30 PM for practiceevery Tuesday through the summer, weather permitting. Our regular meetings on the first Tuesday of each monthwill also be held at the practice site unless weather drivesus back to the Temple.Nearly the whole Unit participated in the St.Patrick’s Day Parade in Ocean View last month and wewere pleased to have Past Potentate Larry Koon andMotor Patrol Captain Ronnie Butler from Acca Templein Richmond join us with their bikes. It was a greatopportunity to break out the bikes, clean off the winterdust and make sure that they still started and ran aftersitting for the better part of winter. What a great day fora parade – the weather was perfect! Although the streetis pretty narrow for the most part of the parade, we didmanage to find a couple of spots to do double figureeights.Ill. Sir Larry and Captain Ronnie fit in the schemevery well. We had a great time watching the people onthe sideline as they enjoyed watching us.If you’re a Harley driver come and join us. You don’tneed to own a white Shrine bike, any Harley will do. Ifyou want to own a white one, we’ll help you find one. We’re always looking for new members.Yours in the Faith,John Howe Captain
