Using fast flying geese method, make four units each withfour different dark and light fabrics (see page 2 for square sizes).2. Using matching fabrics, make half-square triangles (onehalf-square triangle of each fabric pair will be left over).3. Use 2-1/2" light fabricsquares, flying geese units,matching 4-1/2" squares,and half-square triangles=to make four 8" sawtoothvariation blocks (fig. 1).4. Following fig. 2 diagram,Figure 1stitch the four blocks together.5. Sew two 2" x 16-1/2" 3449-Yfabric strips to left and rightsides of center medallion. Sewremaining two 2-1/2" x 19-1/2"strips to top and bottom.6. Sew two 3447-R half-squaretriangles to opposite sides ofcenter medallion. Sew remainingtriangles to remaining sides.7. Sew 2" x 27-1/2" 3444-Ofabric strips to left and right sidesand 2" x 30-1/2" strips to top andbottom to complete the centermedallion (fig. 3).Assembling the Quilt8. Follow Steps 1 and 3 above (using 2"squares in all corners) to make (52) 6"Sawtooth Star Blocks (see page 2 forsquare sizes).9. Use 6-7/8" 3443-K and 3295-K squaresto make 48 half-square triangles.Assembling Rows and BordersFigure 2Fast Flying Geese (see page 2 for square sizes)Step 1. Draw a line diagonally from corner tocorner on 4 matching dark geese squares.Place two of these squares on oppositecorners of one large light fabric square.Sew 1/4" on each side of the line.Step 2. Cut along thedrawn line and press thetriangles to the outside.Step 3. For each of theseunits place another markedsquare on the remaining cornerof the large triangle, watchingorientation.Step 4. Sew 1/4" oneach side of the line.Cut along the drawnline and press. Squareup if necessary.Figure 3Note: Be sure to orient your 6 1/2" half-square triangles so they form long diagonal rows of color as in quilt diagramon page 2 and in quilt photo.10. Stitch 4 rows using 6 half-square triangles and 5 blocks each, alternating.Stitch 2 rows using 6 blocks and 5 half-square triangles each, alternating.11. Stitch 6 rows using 2 blocks and 1 half-square triangle each, alternating.Stitch 4 rows using 2 half-square triangles and 1 block each, alternating.12. Referring to quilt diagram and photo, sew rows and Devil’s Claw Medallion together to make quilt center.13. Sew 2-1/2" x 66-1/2" 3447-R strips to left and right sides of quilt center. Sew 2-1/2" x 70-1/2" strips to top and bottom.14. Sew 6-1/2" x 70-1/2" 3444-O strips to left and right sides. For border corners, sew two each 6-1/2" sawtooth blocksto the two remaining border strips and stitch these strips to top and bottom.Finishing the Quilt15.
