Specialization in Teaching English as a Second LanguagePROGRAM INFORMATIONAdmission requirementsApplicants residing in the Province <strong>of</strong> Quebec must have completed CEGEP. Those applying fromout <strong>of</strong> Province must have completed High School. Mature students are those who have notattended CEGEP and who do not fulfil the normal academic requirements. If you fall into thiscategory, please contact the Centre for Mature Students at 848-3890 to request informationregarding Mature Student Entry.Who is this program for?This program is designed for students wishing to teach in elementary and secondary schools. Theprogram is four years in length (120 credits). Full-time students normally take 30 credits in eachyear, that is, a maximum <strong>of</strong> 15 credits in each <strong>of</strong> the Fall and Winter terms.What is the nature <strong>of</strong> the courses in the program?The program requires 90 credits for the Specialization program plus 30 elective credits. The 90credits involve a stimulating and well-balanced group <strong>of</strong> selections from three areas: theorycourses, method courses, and internships. The internships are undertaken in elementary,secondary and adult level classes. The program has a strong emphasis on language learnerdevelopment. We believe that it is important to know how learners grow and develop in order tobetter meet their needs. To facilitate this, the internships progress from adult to elementary andsecondary placements. For further information please consult the University Calendar.What will I receive upon successful completion <strong>of</strong> the program requirements?Successful candidates will receive a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> degree from Concordia University with aSpecialization in Teaching English as a Second Language, as well as a Brevet d’enseignement,autorisation personelle permanent (a permanent teaching license granted by the Ministry <strong>of</strong><strong>Education</strong>). This license is required for teaching at all levels in the Quebec public school system.How are students selected for the program?Candidates selected for this program have good academic records and show a high interest andcommitment to working with learners and colleagues. Demand for the program is high and wereceive many more applications than we can accommodate. The admission and selection processhas to be, therefore, quite rigorous. Once a student's application file is complete, it is assessed, andqualified applicants are called for an interview, part <strong>of</strong> which is conducted in French.Please look at the APPLICATION PROCEDURE for detail information.

Specialization in Teaching English as a Second LanguageSELECTION CRITERIACandidates who meet the initial criteria will be interviewed. In addition to academicqualifications and experience, we consider language skills, personal style, and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalskills during the interview.THE SELECTION PROCESS TAKES AT LEAST TWO MONTHSStudents already registered in a program at Concordia will be notified <strong>of</strong> their acceptanceor rejection to the program by letter from the <strong>Education</strong> <strong>Department</strong>. External applicantswill receive their letters from the University Admissions Office.Applicants who are not admitted may resubmit in a subsequent competition. Those whowould like a review <strong>of</strong> their failed application should submit their request in writing to theDirector <strong>of</strong> the Undergraduate TESL Programs, stating their grounds clearly. A writtenresponse will be provided by the Program Director.Criteria upon which decisions are basedGradesPriority consideration is given to students with the highest grades and whosestudies are in a field related to English, language and linguistics, education orpsychology.<strong>Application</strong>form responsesOnly responses that comply with the instructions, are clearly written,demonstrate critical reasoning and are free from spelling and grammatical errorsare judged acceptableWork-relatedexperienceApplicants are rated higher if they also have worked in a youth/adult-orientedsetting (e.g., school, camp, youth/community centres and organizations).Letters <strong>of</strong>referenceBoth the reference content and the choice <strong>of</strong> referees will be considered. Thereshould be two references from pr<strong>of</strong>essors/instructors and one referencefrom someone who knows the applicant's ability to work with youth. It ispreferable to have references from people who can comment authoritatively onthe applicant's current potential as a student and educator. References fromhigh school teachers are not recommended except for out-<strong>of</strong>-province applicantsEnglishPlacement TestOnly candidates who place at the required level in the English Placement Testwill be considered for the program.
