He isparticularly keen on investigating the technologic and tactile quality of design. He calls thisTechnics. This involves sensibility and an appreciation of the quality of materials and spaces; thequantities of the environment, building dynamics, gravity, production and process; and mostimportantly, the human experiential responses and needs. A motto to his students is: To make abuilding energy efficient and technologically sound is not that difficult, to compose it beautifully andpoetically at the same time requires one’s lifetime pursuit._______Page 7 of 61 Jun 2012

RESEARCH (statement)• High Density City Urban Climatic (light, thermal, ventilation) Studies• Daylighting Design and Daylight (Sky Model) Studies• Ecological and Sustainable (Architectural) Designs and ProjectsSince arriving at CUHK in 1999, Edward has been successful obtaining both internal and externalcompetitive grants, government technical contracts and organisation donations. [PI andcollaborated project with project sum of approximately HK$80 millions] One of his researchprojects was on how daylight could be harnessed and better used in HK. The project involveddata collection, site survey, user satisfaction survey and computational studies. The aim was toseek ways that better buildings could be designed for high density living of Hong Kong. TheBuildings Department HKSAR has adopted the results as part of its Practice Note for AuthorisedPersons. In 2005, Edward completed a project with the Planning Department HKSAR to improvethe ventilation quality of living in the city. The results have been endorsed by the HK Governmentand implemented as a Technical Circular. It is now also a credit requirement of HK BEAM+environmental assessment system. Both the daylight and the urban ventilation projects have beenreported in international meetings and got Best Paper Awards. The city ventilation project was theRunner-up of the RIBA Research Awards 2007. As a follow up to the city ventilation project,Edward has been commissioned by the HK Govt to draft the Hong Kong Urban Climatic Map forplanning.Edward has been working on a number of projects that focus on renewable energy andsustainability. These projects attempt to bring together two key issues that determine our future:education and environmental sustainability. Under the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage(CIE) International Daylight Monitoring Programme (IDMP), Edward had operated a ResearchClass station at CUHK. Edward has been entrusted to develop a Solar Resources Standard forHong Kong, as well as Mapping the Solar Renewable Energy Potential for southeast China.Lately, he has extended his method to include using satellite images to predict solar radiation anddaylight availability. In association with Xian Jiaotong University, China, an experimental Eco-school near Xian hasbeen built. The project serves as a demonstration to locals and the Chinese Government on howsustainable buildings should be done in the region. It is also the laboratory of on-sitemeasurements. The project has led to a number of design awards including the prestigious RIBAInternational Awards. Lately, Edward has been designing low cost, anti-seismic housing inShichuan, China. The project has been given the Grand Award in the recent Green BuildingAwards of Hong Kong Green Building Council.PUBLICATION (last 6 years only)Apart from his contributions to architecture through design, Edward has made contributions toscholarship through publication. His recent publications are in the areas of daylighting design, environmental design and sustainability in architecture. He is particularly interested in the issuesof the environmental design of high-density cities. His publications on daylight design have beenthe basis of regulatory changes in Hong Kong; his papers outlined methods to achieve betterdaylight design for residential buildings in high density cities. Lately, his papers on Air VentilationAssessment have been the basis of changes to Hong Kong Planning Standards and Guidelines. His studies on Urban Climate have been the basis of design policy changes in Hong Kong.INDEX: 100 stories of Design to Improve Life_______Page 15 of 61 Jun 2012

[PI andcollaborated project with project sum of approximately HK$80 millions] In 2005, Edwardcompleted a project with the Planning Department HKSAR to improve the ventilation quality ofliving in the city. The results have been endorsed by the HK Government and implemented as aTechnical Circular. It is now also a credit requirement of HK BEAM+ environmental assessmentsystem. Both the daylight and the urban ventilation projects have been reported in internationalmeetings and got Best Paper Awards. The city ventilation project was the Runner-up of the RIBAResearch Awards 2007. As a follow up to the city ventilation project, Edward has beencommissioned by the HK Govt to draft the Hong Kong Urban Climatic Map for planning.Ongoing (total project sum appropriately HK$ 30 millions or US$ 3 millions)Urban planning to improve the windenvironment in HD cities by using LESPrincipalInvestigator_______Page 34 of 61 Jun 2012Hong Kong RGC / Germany HongKong Joint Research SchemeG_HK026/11, HK$ 59,2001Jan2012 to 31Dec2013This project proposes to understand Hong Kong`s mega density urban morphology and fabric byusing Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model. In this project, the parametric study will be conductedto get the detailed understanding about the wind behaviours in different urban morphology andstreet fabric. Based on the detailed understanding, planning strategies could be established. Thefinding from this project will not only be of interest for the scientific community but also serve aspractical tools for decision-makers in public health, urban climatology and urban planners.Macau Urban Climatic Map Study – The2 nd Stage StudyPrincipalInvestigatorDSSOPT of Macau Government,HK$ 6,400,000 Jul2011-Jul 2012Based on the study result of the first stage study, the 2 nd stage study aims to further understandMacau urban climate and environment. Eco-SchoolDesign is in the soul of every architect. As a full time academic, it can be difficult to engage in theday-to-day business of architectural practice as a professional. However, it is possible to makecontributions through participating in design studies and design competitions. Most of the designcompetitions Edward entered has a direct relationship with his teaching and research interests andphilosophy. As a design teacher of architectural students, it is important to demonstrate designideas with one’s own works. In addition, design can be test beds of research results andgenerators of research ideas. Some of Edward’s design outputs have been exhibited. Over theyears, He has his design selected and exhibited in the UK, Germany, France, USA, Italy,Singapore, China, Denmark, Hong Kong, and so on. His “Can-Do” structure has been publiclyexhibited in 2003. Since 2004, he has been designing “eco-schools”, “eco-bridges” and “ecovillage”in China as demonstration projects. For example, a HK TV station has made aprogramme about his designs in a two part documentary which has been internationally televisedin 2005.
