A Message to the CommunityThanks to you, our physicians, staff, volunteers and Board leadership, our hospital continues to provide quality patient careto our community. This year we celebrate many significant accomplishments from the completion of our building projectto the overwhelming generosity of the community that made our capital campaign so successful. <strong>New</strong> <strong>London</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>continues its proud service to our families and friends in the towns of Andover, Bradford, Croyden, Danbury, Elkins,Goshen, Grantham, Lempster, <strong>New</strong> <strong>London</strong>, <strong>New</strong>bury, <strong>New</strong>port, Springfield, Sunapee, Sutton, Washington, and Wilmot.We are pleased to share these notable achievements of our recent fiscal year, which ended on September 30, <strong>2009</strong>.• Throughout the two-year construction period, the hospitalmaintained its focus on patient care, often moving services toa temporary location in order to continue to care for patients.Our patients were always our priority and we appreciate thecommunity’s patience with parking challenges and changingdirections within the hospital!• The Building Towards the Future project resulted in all privateinpatient rooms, new space for our providers, centralized patientregistration, expanded services for specialists such as ConcordOrthopaedics, a new rehabilitative and sports medicine area,new and expanded clinical space for pain management, oncologyservices and the Coumadin program, the return of pediatricservices to the hospital campus, and additional parking forpatients and visitors.• Community support for <strong>New</strong> <strong>London</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>’s capital campaignexceeded our goal of $7.2 million at the end of a unique effortthat began with our groundbreaking in August 2007, making ourbuilding project possible.• The volume of our clinical services grew 3.3% over prior year inFY <strong>2009</strong>.• The hospital’s provider practices were awarded the NHImmunization Project <strong>2009</strong> Award for Excellence in ClinicalEducation for the development of a staff manual onimmunizations.• The Barbara Jane Baker Memorial Laboratory again completeda successful survey by the College of American Pathologists.• The Clough Extended Care Center had a successful statesurvey and has been designated a 5-Star facility by the Centersfor Medicare and Medicaid.• We continue to ensure that we have quality providers to meetthe primary care needs of our patients and we strive to providethe specialty services appropriate for our hospital. Health Center and Lawrence Jenkyn, MD, Neurologist joinedthe team of hospital specialists.• Drs. Stephen Bissah, Adnan Kahn, Steven Powell and AshwinSwami staff the hospital’s 24/7 <strong>Hospital</strong>ist Program, under theleadership of Gregory Curtis, MD, full-time.• Greg Curtis, MD, was appointed Chief Medical Officer for <strong>New</strong><strong>London</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> and director of the 24/7 <strong>Hospital</strong>ist program.• Cheryl Fitzgerald, certified chaplain, joined <strong>New</strong> <strong>London</strong><strong>Hospital</strong> and provides spiritual care services to inpatients,residents of the Clough Center and staff.• We received a grant in the amount of $264,000 from the NHDepartment of Health and Human Services, Maternal andChild Health, to provide enhanced primary care services at the<strong>New</strong>port Health Center to Sullivan County residents.• Partnering with West Central Behavioral Health, weimplemented an integrated behavioral health program for<strong>New</strong>port Health Center patients.• The <strong>New</strong> <strong>London</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> Ambulance Service received the Unitof the Year Award from the State of NH, recognizing exemplarycommunity service. Our 24/7 ambulance service continuesto serve the community with financial support from the townsof Grantham, <strong>New</strong>bury, <strong>New</strong> <strong>London</strong>, Springfield, Sunapee,Sutton, and Wilmot.• We held our 7th annual Emergency Services Conference atMount Sunapee Resort, attracting over 400 participants.• We continue very thoughtful deliberation of the opportunityto create a Continuous Care Retirement Community (CCRC)on hospital land. Surveys and focus groups have been held todetermine community interest in this project.• Catherine Budd joined the management team as senior directorof human resources.• The NH Department of Resources and Economic Developmentrecognized the hospital’s building project with a First ClassBusiness Award.• The 4th annual Grand Gala, 6th annual Golf Tournament and85th annual <strong>Hospital</strong> Days, combined with generous communitysupport, contributed to a successful <strong>Annual</strong> Fund.• The Friends of <strong>New</strong> <strong>London</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> volunteers, both inhouseand community committee members, came together toensure that the mission of the hospital was supported throughtheir projects and activities in FY <strong>2009</strong>.The combined groupof volunteers adds to the heartbeat of the hospital. The newFriends of <strong>New</strong> <strong>London</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> Gift Shop opened in May,serving patients, visitors and staff with expanded hours. Inhousevolunteers contributed over 11,482 hours of servicerepresenting a dollar figure of $232,505 to many departmentsthroughout the hospital from the mailroom to the front desk.• <strong>New</strong> <strong>London</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong>, the provider practices in <strong>New</strong> <strong>London</strong>,<strong>New</strong>port and Grantham, and the Clough Extended Care Centeragain combined to produce a positive bottom line for the year.• The <strong>Hospital</strong> continues to implement new modules of itsHealthcare Information System and primary care providers aremoving to the use of computer tablets as part of the hospital’sinitiative to use Electronic Medical Records.<strong>New</strong> <strong>London</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2009</strong> 7
