Welcome to ESDR 2010
on behalf of the Local organising Committee and the
Finnish association of Dermatologists I wish to welcome
you all to the 40th annual Meeting of the esDR in Helsinki.
We have chosen Marina Congress Center in the harbor of
Helsinki as the venue for this event and hope that you will
enjoy the seaside charm of the city.
The esDR scientific Program Committee has worked hard
to generate an exciting scientific program for the meeting
and the Local organising Committee has made every
effort to make the social program including Welcome
Reception and Gala evening attractive and enjoyable to
all participants.
The esDR 2010 meeting will give an excellent opportunity
to meet old friends, make new acquaintances, generate
novel ideas and develop scientific collaborations.
Welcome from the ESDR President
The esDR is 40 years old this year; congratulations to
the esDR on the birthday at which people frequently
say that “life is just beginning”. In reality, life is just
getting better and better for the esDR. as a result of
the hard work undertaken by many of the current and
former Board members, including many of its former
presidents, the esDR continues to grow in strength
and in numbers and has established itself as hosting
“THe MeeTInG” to attend for top quality science
during the day and good socialising each evening.
The esDR recognises that major advances in clinical care
for patients with skin disorders result from a combination of
advances in the understanding of genetic, epidemiological
and molecular processes in normal and diseased skin,
with a continuing drive towards the development of novel
biomarkers and therapeutic agents through high-quality
interactions between clinicians, scientists and members
of the pharmaceutical/biotechnological industries.
In addition, there is widespread recognition within our
society that the optimal clinical care for future patients
with skin diseases rests not only on the shoulders
of its current members, and on the members of its
sister societies (sID and JsID), but is dependent
5
I wish you all a very pleasant and exciting 40th annual
Meeting of the esDR.
Prof Veli-Matti Kähäri
Chair, Local organising Committee
on first-rate education and mentoring of junior
clinicians and scientists-in-training across the world.
This means that the program for the annual meeting has
been developed in a manner which provides something
for everyone, via a mixture of invited lectures, original
research presentations, symposia and workshops.
But it is not just about passive listening during these
sessions, it is about active participation through asking
questions, chatting to other delegates during the coffee
breaks and discussing the latest science which has just
been presented by familiar and not-so-familiar faces.
Looking forward to seeing you in Helsinki!
Prof Eugene Healy
President, european society for Dermatological Research
POSTGRADUATE COURSE
our knowledge in basic science is rapidly increasing.
Dermatology has numerous interfaces with basic
science fields. Thus, a constant update in these areas is
crucial for the further development of dermatological
research. The purpose of the Postgraduate Course is
to provide overviews about primarily non-dermatologic
topics that are relevant for experimental and clinical
dermatology. These talks are principally intended as
essential updates for “non-experts”.
The 2010 esDR Postgraduate Course is dedicated to
the memory of Prof Ulpu saarialho-Kere.
CLINICAL SATURDAy
The main mission of the esDR is to foster basic
research in dermatology and skin biology. To increase
the exchange between basic scientists and clinicians
at the annual meeting, the esDR has included a
“Clinical saturday” as part of the regular program.
By offering Clinical saturday and industry sponsored
symposia, the esDR hopes to make the meeting as
attractive for clinicians as it always has been for basic
scientists. The esDR feels committed to satisfying the
needs and interests of both scientists and clinicians.
The dialogue and cross fertilization between these
two groups is essential for the future prosperous
development of dermatology.
Immunoglobulin
as designed by nature
For full prescribing information please refer to the Summary of Product Characteristics:
Intratect® - Human Normal Immunoglobulin for Intravenous Administration, Ph. Eur. Composition: 1ml of solution contains: human plasma protein 50mg, thereof at least 96% is IgG, excipients: Glycine and water for
injection. Indications: Replacement therapy in: Primary immunodefi ciency syndromes such as: - congenital agammaglobulinaemia and hypogammaglobulinaemia, - common variable immunodefi ciency, - severe combined
immunodefi ciency, - Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome; Myeloma or chronic lymphocytic leukaemia with severe secondary hypogammaglobulinaemia and recurrent infections; Children with congenital AIDS and recurrent
infections. Immunomodulation: Idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP), in children or adults with a high risk of bleeding or prior to surgery to correct the platelet count; Guillain-Barré syndrome, Kawasaki disease.
Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to any of the components. Hypersensitivity to homologous immunoglobulins especially in very rare cases of IgA defi ciency when the patient
has antibodies against IgA. Special warnings and special precautions for use: Certain adverse may occur more frequently: in cases of high rate of infusion, in patients with hypo- or agammaglobulinaemia with or without
IgA defi ciency, in patients who receive human normal immunoglobulin for the fi rst time or, in rare cases, when the product is switched or there is a long interval since the previous infusion. Rarely, human normal immunoglobulin
can induce a fall in blood pressure with anaphylactic reaction, even in patients who had previously tolerated treatment with human normal immunoglobulin. Cases of acute renal failure have been reported
in patients receiving IVIg therapy. Standard measures to prevent infections resulting from the use of medicinal products prepared from human blood or plasma include the selection of donors, screening of individual
donations and plasma pools for specifi c markers of infection and the inclusion of effective manufacturing steps for the the inactivation/removal of viruses. Despite this, when medicinal products prepared from human
blood or plasma are administered the possibility of transmitting infective agents cannot be totally excluded. This also applies to unknown or emerging viruses and other pathogens. Undesirable effects: Adverse reactions
such as chills, headache, fever, vomiting, allergic reactions, nausea, arthralgia, low blood pressure and moderate back pain may occur occasionally. Rarely IVIg may cause a sudden fall in blood pressure and, in isolated
cases, anaphylactic shock, even when the patient has shown no hypersensitivity to previous administration. Cases of reversible aseptic meningitis, isolated cases of reversible haemolytic anaemia/haemolysis, rare cases
of transient cutaneous reactions, and increase in serum creatinine level and/or acute renal failure have been observed with IVIg. Very rarely thromboembolic reactions such as myocardial infarction, stroke, pulmonary
embolism, deep vein thrombosis may occur.
