f r o m t h e e d i t o r ’ s d e s kThe Tireless ToilerAdeel A. Butt, MBBS ’90It was his second week in Toronto.He had moved his family fromacross the world to seek a betterlife for his children. Like countlessothers, despite a good job and acomfortable life in Pakistan, he hadfinally made a decision to move forthe sake of his family. And now hewas here, along with all of them.He had enough savings to keep thefamily living comfortably till hefound a job of his choice and inhis own field. But when he got anunexpected call for an entry levelposition, something he would haveexpected two decades earlier inhis life, he accepted it. He was aconscientious man, a breadwinnerand a hard worker. Staying idle didnot suit him well, even when hecould have done it comfortably fora long while.Since he had just arrived, hedid not have a car or a driver’slicense. The workplace was veryfar away. But he managed. Heworked hard, though the job wasfar below his level of qualification.One week into this job, one of hiscolleagues decided to quit and hewas asked to take on double shiftstill a replacement was found. Heaccepted willingly.One week later, his managersummoned him to his office. “Ihave noticed that you are always 10minutes late,” he said. “I know youare new, and I know how thingswork in your home country, butI want to tell you that in Canada,we expect and reward hard work.”He demanded an explanation.“Well, first of all, let me apologizefor this,” the new worker started.“You see, I live so far away, I getup every morning at about 4 amto catch the first bus to the trainstation to catch the first train to getto this stop, and then take anotherbus to reach here.” Making it clearthat he was explaining and notexcusing himself, he continued:“And last week, you asked me todouble up my shifts. Which means,I don’t leave work till 9 pm, andreach home around midnight. Andthen I start again.” The managerwas quiet. “I would still get upearlier, and get here on time, ifthere were an earlier bus and anearlier train from where I come,”continued the worker. “And sinceI just arrived here, I don’t have adriver’s license and cannot buy orrent a car, and the taxi costs morethan what I earn.” The managerwas dumbfounded. “I have not seenmy children awake in two weeks,but I am happy and eager to put inan honest day’s work, and that’show many of my country mateswork.” The manager did not utteranother word.The following week, theworker was promoted to the levelof a supervisor. The company madeit a point to hire Pakistani workersfrom that point on.As a nation, we need to reflectwhy many such people have leftPakistan. More importantly, howcan we bring them back. Changesare happening in Pakistan, andall Pakistanis should do theirhonest part to realize the dreamsof a magnificent country and itsmagnificent people. •Based on a true storyDr Junaid A.
