This issue of the in the loupe was designed
and printed by Millennium Graphics.
from the Director
Welcome to the 2008 year end issue of in the loupe.
it has been a particularly eventful year for the PrC. thousands of members have
attended our exhibitions, lectures, workshops, member events, and youth programs.
tens of thousands of members (and i’m sure a few non-members) have logged on
to the PrC web site, blog, flickr pages, Myspace pages, and facebook pages. the
expansion of the PrC community in both the real and the virtual world is due in
great part to the amazing energy of the PrC staff, the board, and a legion of volunteers.
thanks again everyone.
I’d like to take a minute to comment on two very important events.
first, the introduction of the PrC Portfolio. in september, the PrC published its
first portfolio in 26 years. the photographers included in the portfolio are Barbara
Bosworth, Jim Dow, lalla essaydi, ralph Gibson, frank Gohlke, emmet Gowin,
robert and shana Parkeharrison, David hilliard, henry horenstein, Jocelyn lee,
laura McPhee, susan Meiselas, arno rafael Minkkinen, abelardo Morell, Patti smith,
and sage sohier. By all accounts, the portfolio has been both a critical and financial
success.
second, Michael Christiano said goodbye. Despite major begging and pleading,
Michael accepted the position of Curator of education at the southeastern Center
for Contemporary art in winston-salem, north Carolina. if you attended a lecture,
a workshop, or enrolled your child in Photo Camp, you know firsthand the extent
of Michael’s contribution. we will miss him greatly.
Jim Fitts, Executive Director
for theoretical Physics. the new space, which features a major installation by sol
lewitt and an exhibition of photographs by ansel adams, was dedicated on october 4,
new england school of Photography (nesoP) as well as the broader photographic
community lost two important people recently. the PrC is honored to share two
tributes written by fellow photographers and friends.
Miriam Goodman, 1938 – 2008
By Karen Davis
Miriam Goodman was passionate about photography — her
practice and everybody else’s. as a teacher of “word and
image” art and portfolio development, she inspired many.
it took someone with her unique background to initiate a
series, sponsored by nesoP and lesley seminars, now in its
13th year, where poets and photographers create a work of
art in the form of their collaborative presentation. as photography
editor of Women’s Review of Books, she introduced
readers to socially conscious photographers she felt should
have a broader audience. artist, teacher, collaborator, and
friend —Miriam left a wonderful legacy. for her photography and
word and image pieces, please see www.MiriamGoodman.com.
PRC Board President Cathy England made a special speech
bidding adieu to Michael Christiano during the 2008 PRC Benefit
Live Auction. He received a farewell photograph by Stella
Johnson as a parting gift. Photograph by Mike Howard.
Farewell Michael!
For those of you who have not heard, we are sad to announce that
Michael Christiano has resigned from his position as Education Manager.
During his three years in that capacity Michael ushered in a
wave of successful programs and outreach initiatives. Who will ever
forget our packed master lecture series or his fun-filled tours? Under
Michael’s stewardship the PRC’s education program grew by leaps and
bounds, garnered numerous prestigious grants, and is now known
nationally. We will all miss Michael’s humor and ability to lift heavy
objects, not to mention his dedication, enthusiasm, and passion for
education. Michael has accepted a position as Curator of Education at
the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, NC.
He and his wife Becca relocated to the South in November. Please join
us in wishing our favorite educator the best in his new endeavors.
And stay tuned for an introduction to our new Education Manager!
Tom Petit, 1942 – 2008
By Henry Horenstein
tom Petit died august 4. he was the consummate teacher.
tom knew his stuff and supported his students. he had
totally positive energy, despite battling health problems
most of his life.
tom came to nesoP in the 1970s to teach color photography
at a time when everyone else worked in black and white.
the nesoP population was very mixed in those days — from
60s dropouts to marine vets, returning from vietnam. tom
treated everyone equally — with kindness, good spirit, and
hard work.
tom was an innovator, whose personal work was strong,
emotive, and underappreciated. Much like tom himself.

KeepingTime:
Cycle and Duration in Contemporary Photography
November 7, 2008 – January 25, 2009
by Leslie K. Brown, PRC Curator
This group exhibition brings together photographers who deal with concepts of time,
duration, and cycles — human, celestial, and photographic — in their work. From the
“music of the spheres” to “seasonal affective disorder,” there is no doubt that humans
are affected by time and the natural rhythms of the sun, moon, tides, and seasons.
Since its very beginnings, photography has been lauded as nature capturing itself
and as a method with which to stop, preserve, and contemplate time.
In creating their work, each artist in Keeping Time uses a different idea or aesthetic
means to capture time and bookend or collect their exposures. For example, several
in the show create rules or use outside activities to dictate when the shutter is open
and closed. Others follow important celestial markers, like equinoxes, or human markers,
like birthdays or conversations. Concomitant with this, a number of the artists in
the exhibition incorporate, and often welcome, elements of chance within their work.
Photography can cumulatively record time and light in a way that no other medium
(or even our eyes) can. Recalling earlier motion and time studies of Eadweard Muybridge
and Étienne-Jules Marey, some alter their cameras or construct new forms of

light recording devices. These artists cut to the core of the medium itself and duly
consider the interesting possibilities of light as subject as well as the materializing of
the medium
Time itself is both an experience and a construct. Our understanding and conception of
it has changed over time and place. “Standard time” came into being as a result of the
railroads needing to coordinate schedules; “daylight savings time” is itself a convention,
adopted to take advantage of daylight in the summer months. Today, new developments
in physics and astronomy challenge and extend our traditional conceptions of
light, space, and time. This work also brings to mind philosophical and mathematical
concepts of duration and time—from the theories of Henri Bergson to Albert Einstein.
As time seems to pass by faster and faster everyday, these artists grant us a chance
to look to the sky and slow down. It is not a far jump, then, for us to contemplate the
natural cycle of life and death, not only for astronomical bodies, but for our own
bodies as well. Simply put, Keeping Time aims to unite various projects that attempt
to make sense of and keep time.
Stuart Allen (Born 1970, Wichita, Kansas: Lives San Antonio, TX)
In his series “Light Maps,” Stuart Allen investigates the color of
light by exploiting a difference in the manner in which our eyes
and cameras perceive light. By disabling the automatic white balance
feature of his digital camera, he records the changing color
of ambient daylight. Allen places a piece of white sailcloth in front
of the lens and creates exposures at predetermined time frames.
Cropped and assembled in strips, the images create modified panoramas.
Akin to 19th century survey photographs, information at
the bottom of each print conveys the time of day, interval captured,
and longitude/latitude coordinates. Much like a scientific chart,
sunrise and sunset are often pointed out on the spectrum. The
resulting artworks could be likened to a 21st century parsing of
impressionism. With his work, Allen reminds us that cameras can
often tell us something about our environment (and by extension,
our perception and conception of it) that we wouldn’t otherwise see.
Allen’s diverse background includes training in architecture and a
BFA in photography and video from the Kansas City Art Institute.
Allen is collected by national and international institutions and has
institutions in California and Texas.
In “Café Gnomonics,” she brings her own tablecloth to a variety of
the outcome. (Gnomonics is the art or science of constructing
of the duration of human acts of conversation or consumption.
