“A Sunflower tool for every soil type and cropping program.”With approximately 4,600 acres of rowcrops spread across the southern tipof Illinois, Mark and Dana Eddlemanface a wide range of soil and croppingconditions.“We farm everything from nearly rockysoil to pure black gumbo with silty loamand clay in between,” says Dana. “Andeach soil type seems to require a littlebit different action and approach.”Added to the mix is weather that rangesfrom too dry one year to too wet the next.In 2011 alone, the brothers receivedmore than 50 inches of rain, with muchof it falling during planting time.As a result, the Eddlemans may useany combination of their Sunflowertillage tools, backed by a SunflowerModel 9421 grain drill. They’ll go largelyno-till, for example, on their hilly groundand when double-cropping soybeansbehind wheat — using either the 9421or their White planter to seed the crop.If they’re planting soybeans behind cornon bottom ground, they will often discthe field in the spring and follow the discharrow with the 5035 field cultivator.Likewise, if the brothers suspectcompaction could become a problem,they will often use the 2433 chisel plowin the fall to break up any hardpan thathas developed.However, one of the newest and mostversatile tools in their tillage arsenal istheir 6630 vertical tillage machine.“We’ve actually used the ‘VT’ toolbehind our disc in place of the fieldcultivator, particularly when we’ve hada lot of weed growth from heavy rainsthat have kept us out of the fields,” Markexplains. “It will go right through thatheavy residue.
