Message from the Co-Artistic Directors
Dear Friends,
In 1991, Opera Atelier broke new ground in the period music world when we premiered North America’s
first period production of The Magic Flute. It is difficult to imagine now — more than 20 years after the
fact — just what an outrageous and daring undertaking it was!
People’s initial reactions ranged from shocked disbelief to outright anger that we would imagine a period
production of “standard” repertoire could have something new and vital to say. The overwhelming
success of that production, however, spoke for itself and has had a major impact on how people in North
America think of Mozart’s operas.
This evening, we are taking what is perhaps an even more thrilling leap into uncharted territory. Our
production of the first Romantic opera — Weber’s Der Freischütz — boldly redefines the very parameters
of what constitutes period performance. We are not just drawing a line in the sand; we are stepping past
the line in saying all periods are fair game to be reinterpreted in historically informed productions. Our
hearts are still firmly grounded in Baroque repertoire, and this will be reflected in our programming in
the years to come, but we also look forward to the potential of re-examining masterpieces by composers
such as Debussy, Bizet and even Wagner.
We could never hope to realize this vision were we not supported in our determination by a deeply
committed team of artists including Tafelmusik — one of the finest period ensembles in the world.
It is with great excitement that all of us at Opera Atelier take this giant step in a new direction and we
invite you to join us, support us, and take this thrilling risk with us as we look to the future.
• Marshall Pynkoski & Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg
Co-Artistic Directors, Opera Atelier
Message from the Chair
Welcome to Opera Atelier’s magnificent production of Der Freischütz (The Marksman)!
I am pleased to be addressing you in these pages as the new Chair of the Board of Directors, especially
at this exciting time in the history of our 27-year-old opera company. There have been several important
changes recently at Opera Atelier, with Patricia Barretto settling into her role as Executive Director
and Dan Hickey joining our team as our new Director of Development. I believe we have a very strong,
cohesive and motivated administrative team in place at Opera Atelier that will serve us well as we move
into our exciting 2012-13 season.
2011-12 was a remarkable year for Opera Atelier. Our fall production of Don Giovanni and spring
production of Armide were both great successes. In May we presented our production of Armide at the
Royal Opera House in Versailles and during the summer we participated in the Glimmerglass Festival
in upstate New York, in both locations to sold out houses and wonderful critical reviews from a wide
spectrum of sources.
Following on these successes, everyone at Opera Atelier has been busy working to realize our long-time
dream of exploring new work from the Romantic period. What you will see on stage tonight is a thrilling
realization of Marshall and Jeannette’s ever-expanding vision of “period production” as something that
can exist in any century, as long as the work is true to the intentions of its author.
I know that Marshall, Jeannette and our entire Opera Atelier team are looking forward to a wonderful
year. I am also very excited about the year before us and the opportunity of working with our Board of
Directors to build upon the successes of our wonderful company.
Thank you for joining with us tonight, and I hope we will see you in April at our wildly popular production
of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
Der FreisChütz - Synopsis
ACT I
A young peasant Killian has beaten our title marksman Max at target
practice. Max is set to become the successor to the head forester Kuno and
marry Kuno’s daughter Agathe, with whom he is deeply in love. A test of
marksmanship is required to prove his worth, but Max has experienced an
extended patch of bad luck. Shaken, he easily falls prey to a strange villager,
Kaspar, who tempts Max with the promise of magic bullets. Kaspar hopes
to buy time from the Devil (known as Samiel) by tricking Max into bartering
his soul for seven magic bullets to be cast at midnight in the cursed Wolf’s
Glen. Despite the encouragement and blessings of the townspeople, Max
cannot stand the thought of losing Agathe and agrees to meet Kaspar.
ACT II
Agathe and her companion Äanchen are re-hanging a portrait, which has
fallen. In German folklore this indicates that someone in the household will
soon die. Äanchen makes light of the omen, while discussing the next day’s
marksmanship contest and Agathe’s marriage. Agathe tells Äanchen of her
meeting with the Hermit — a holy man living alone in the woods. He has
had a premonition that Agathe is in danger and has given her a bouquet of
roses to protect her from unknown forces. Äanchen light-heartedly tries to
brighten the atmosphere with jokes about boys and marriage. Agathe waits
up to see Max one last time before the festivities of the next day. He arrives,
but his preoccupied behaviour does nothing to lighten her mood. When
they part, neither looks forward to the dark night ahead of them.
When Max arrives to meet Kaspar at the outskirts of the Wolf’s Glen,
he is warned away by a terrible vision of his late mother. The demon,
Samiel — who Kaspar summons with a magic spell — lures Max into
the Glen and the seven magic bullets are cast, accompanied by
terrifying apparitions.
ACT III
The next morning, Agathe prepares for her wedding, while
telling Äanchen of the troubling night she had due to a
terrifying dream. Agathe has dreamt she was turned into a
dove and shot by her fiancé. Äanchen dismisses the dream
but when the bridesmaids arrive with the bridal wreath, it is
discovered — to everyone’s horror — that a funeral wreath
has been sent instead. Äanchen suggests Agathe wear the
Hermit’s roses.
Prince Ottokar presides over the celebrations of singing and
dancing which accompany the official shoot. He instructs Max
to shoot a distant dove to prove his skill. Agathe cries out in terror,
and Max appears to have shot her by mistake. The demon
Samiel, however, has played a double deal and the final
bullet has in fact shot Kaspar. Agathe revives from
her faint, only to hear Prince Ottokar banish
Max for his dealing in black magic. The Hermit
appears as a Deus Ex Machina and denounces
the trial of marksmanship, while urging
forgiveness for Max. Prince Ottokar and the
villagers embrace the Hermit’s message of
clemency and welcome the dawn of a new age.
Director's Notes
It has been a great privilege to direct this production of Der Freischütz (The Marksman). This
groundbreaking work by Carl Maria Von Weber has taken all of us at Opera Atelier in directions we
could never have thought possible when the company was first imagined.
Der Freischütz is born out of a world in upheaval - politically, socially and spiritually. The Romantic
revolution created a new universe in which human emotions - once meant to be rationally controlled -
were now consciously explored and cultivated.
The disenfranchised youth of the late 18th and early 19th centuries faced moral dilemmas that were
unthinkable in previous generations. In Der Freischütz, it is Max's sense of being alone in a universe
controlled by chance which leads him to adopt desperate means in an effort to control his fate.
Max, as an angst-driven anti-hero, is cast in the same mold as numerous tormented young “romantics”
including Goethe's Werther, Lord Byron, and Shelley, while being the precursor of our own tragic rebels.
James Dean, Montgomery Clift, Jim Morrison and Heath Ledger are among the more recent casualties
of the “romantic” revolution which left so many of the most vulnerable members of society without any
sense of permanence or place.
Max does find a kind of redemption, but not before confronting the horror of the Wolf’s Glen — a
tangible metaphor for the dark and tortured psyche of our protagonist's mind.
The acting style for this production is still essentially gestural, but the gesture is now propelled by a
desire to explore a heightened emotional response on the part of the actor. Film footage of the great 19th
century actors Mounet Sully and Sarah Bernhardt have been invaluable resources for our cast as has
been the dramatic gestural vocabulary of Romantic ballets such as Giselle and La Sylphide.
More than ever before, the realization of this production has been dependant on the focussed
determination of OA’s remarkable team of singers, dancers, instrumentalists, conductor, choreographer
and designers. I also wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to our stage management team and OA’s
administration under the inspired guidance of our Executive Director, Patricia Barretto.
At the end of the day, we have all given ourselves over, without reservation, to the huge, heightened
dramatic world of the early 19th century. The experience has been unnerving, thrilling and deeply
rewarding.
It gives us great pleasure to be able to show you where our journey has taken us and we are all gratified
that you have chosen to join us.
• Marshall Pynkoski
Choreographer's Notes
Preparing dances for Weber’s Der Freischütz (1821)
has been a great pleasure. Weber’s music for the
dance sections is perfectly suited to the central
European dance styles, which help to give the
production its local colour so characteristic of
Romantic opera and ballet.
My main source for early Romantic Ballet is
the work of the Danish choreographer Auguste
Bournonville. Bournonville was training in Paris
in the 1820’s, with the great Vestris (fils). Vestris
père had been a famous proponent of the Baroque
“noble style,” but later in his career began working
with composers such as Gluck. Both Vestris
and Gluck shared an interest in the new “ballet
d’action,” developed by Noverre, and were part
of the transition from Baroque to Romantic Ballet.
Vestris the son carried on his father’s work, adding
new steps and positions to the ever-developing
canon of theatrical dancing. Bournonville took
this French style to Denmark, where it has
been preserved to this day. He, like his
fellow Romantics, believed in the inner
spiritual strength and harmony of man,
and tried to avoid all “excess” of virtuosity
and showing off in his dances. My
choreography for Der Freischütz reflects
this philosophy and uses many steps
drawn from the Bournonville technique.
The Romantic interest in the national
dances of central Europe is an important
element in Der Freischütz. The opening
dance is based on Slavonic character
dances (the opera is set in Bohemia).
Next the pas de quatre gives us a glimpse
of the emergence of light pointe work for women,
first seen in the late 18th century. Pas de deux
at that time included a great deal of parallel
movement along with simple lifts and turns.
The lively Waltz which follows is characteristic
of German Landlers, far more athletic than the
Waltz of the late 19th century. The Quadrille
for Bridesmaids and Groomsmen uses actual
figures from an 1820’s Quadrille. The playful
Hunter’s Dance reflects the joy of mankind when
in harmony with nature and sets the scene for the
climactic moment of the opera.
Set Design Notes Costume Design Notes
Before I started working on Der Freischütz, the word “Phantasmagoria” meant little to me. If asked, I
might have guessed that it was the title of a cheezy Vincent Price horror flick from the 1950’s or perhaps
a modern-day Tim Burton fantasy-fest. Little did I realize its meaning held the solution to the problem
of creating a convincing “period production” of an opera featuring apparitions, hallucinations and
encounters with the Devil.
Weber’s opera is famous not only as the first true Romantic opera, but its nightmarish Wolf’s Glen scene
is considered the most successful evocation of the macabre in the operatic repertoire. The problem to be
solved was how to create effects for this scene that would evoke early stage technology, meld with the
painted sets and stay clear of “scary” costumes and silly props.
Phantasmagoria was a pre-cinematic theatrical entertainment that catered to a public entranced by
Romantic reverie and gothic horror. As early as 1797, showmen like Étienne-Gaspar Robertson staged
shows in abandoned churches and monasteries complete with spectral visions, sound effects and smells
that had audiences screaming, fainting and running out of the theatre.
Using a modified magic lantern called a Fantascope, painted glass slides of skeletons, demons and
ghosts were projected onto walls, screens or smoke. Most often employing back-projection, these flamepowered
lanterns were mounted onto mobile carriages and had sophisticated self-focussing lenses
that allowed the image to move and appear larger or smaller. Multiple lanterns allowed for the quick
fade from one image to the next and operators were able to pan, zoom and project in two and threedimensions.
Film historians consider Phantasmagoria to be the forerunner of the Hollywood horror film.
Modern-day video projection is only a small step away from this early stage technology so the design
team at Opera Atelier felt that it was time to introduce it to the OA stage. Our first thought was to
project film footage of the wild boars, stampeding horses and swarming birds described in the libretto;
but somehow, it all started to feel like an episode of “Wild Kingdom”. It wasn’t until we stumbled onto
the paintings of Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) that our ideas finally crystallized. His canvases depicting
themes from Shakespeare, Milton or simply a fevered imagination provided a wealth of images for the
ghoulish apparitions and visions that make up the Wolf’s Glen scene. The artist’s reputation as a father
of Romanticism jived with the historical placement of the opera, the video manipulation of the paintings
would evoke the Phantasmagoria shows of the early 19th century, and suddenly the link to Vincent Price
and Tim Burton didn’t seem unlikely after all.
• Gerard Gauci
Designs of the "Wolf's Glen" backdrop and
Freischütz scrim by Gerard Gauci
This is one of those operas the aficionados
all know, but have seldom, if ever, seen. It
is the beginning of something new. Leaving
the Baroque behind it marks the beginning
of German language Romantic opera; full of
supernatural happenings and the conflict
between good and evil; often with strangely
religious connotations.
How to costume this? The initial
production, in 1843, was set at the end of
the Thirty Years War. This meant oceans
of lace, padded breeches, velvet, gold
braid, etc. This picture seems to conflict
with the new Romantic Movement,
the libretto and even the music. How
to resolve this difficulty? After much
discussion with Marshall, the solution
seemed to be to set this opera at the
time of its composition, the early
nineteenth century. I decided on two
specific references: contemporary
portraiture and the emerging school
of genre painting. I found this a happy
choice for there are many paintings
of hunts, huntsmen and of ordinary
people in rustic landscapes. As
well, the 19th century was very
fond of picturing medieval legends,
which indeed permeate the whole of
the Germanic Romantic movement
to the plot of this opera. I have a
personal connection to the plot of
this opera. My great grandfather was
a woodsman and gamekeeper on a
Scottish estate and won many medals
for marksmanship without the help of
magic bullets!
SALUTE TO
ALBERTA CEFIS
The artists, the staff and the production team of
Opera Atelier wish to extend their heartfelt thanks
to OA’s outgoing Board Chair, Alberta Cefis, for her
unwavering support of the company’s endeavours.
Opera Atelier has experienced exceptional growth
under her inspired leadership over the past nine
years. It has meant a great deal to us to have a
Chair who is such a genuine and informed advocate
of the arts. We look forward to our continued
friendship with Alberta in the years to come.
