La Cage auxFollesArgentin By Natalie PepaWe heard about a newmilonga—the first openly gaymilonga in Buenos Aires. Ona Wednesday evening, after SalonCanning, six of us walked some fourblocks to La Marshal. On the ground level we parted heavyred velvet curtains and found ourselvesin a room with a bar at the end. Stairs tothe right and tango music led us up tothe milonga. At the landing, a youngman took our 5 pesos and we walkedinto a medium-sized room with a woodendance floor. The majority of the patrons wereyoung men, but we saw a handful ofwomen and two or three oldergentlemen. A friendly woman greeted usand immediately set about preparing atable for us. Above, behind a glasswindow, Mario waved to us inrecognition. He is the DJ at El Arranque,Nino Bien and others.Men danced together and dancedvery well. We recognized several fromseveral current tango shows.Considering their capabilities, it wasinteresting to see them dancing in anunassuming way, obviously there toenjoy the dance rather than to show offtheir acrobatic skills. Some couplesalternated leading while others stayed inthe same role throughout.Shortly after we were seated one ofthe organizers took the mike. "We havevisitors with us tonight and would like towelcome them," he announced. Heintroduced us and told about our recentqualification in the semifinals of theMetropolitan Tango competition. How didhe know? Well, Mario was the DJ duringthe event! We were then asked to danceand did so. Even though we knew ourlevel was nowhere near theirs, our dancewas received with warmth and applause. When we sat down, two of the men cameto our table and asked our male partnersto dance. To my amazement, mypartner—a true milonguero—took theinvitation and was off dancing toD’Arienzo. The atmosphere was relaxed andamiable, the music great. Rules about"cabeceo" (nod of the head - how oneinvites and accepts a partner to dance atanda in the milongas of Buenos Aires)were out the window and we all endedup dancing for several hours. Thefollowing week we came back with alarger group as the organizers hadencouraged. This milonga is well on itsway to success.La Marshal is open on Wednesdaynights at 11 PM and is located at4185 Cordoba.1 Tango Noticas July 2004

Tango and Bagels By Natalie Pepaup bagels. I was reminded of the latemilongas in Buenos Aires where you getyour morning sweet rolls at the door.Sunday was the best yet. The daybegan at two in the afternoon, yes, onceagain—Mocha Joe’s. The entrance was$5 Canadian (about $3.50 U.S.) and onecould order food and drinks. While weate lunch, a wonderful three piece bandconsisting of piano, flute and violinplayed tangos in the background. Therewere weekend visitors from Boston andVermont who said they visited Montrealoften. We danced through the afternoonuntil almost 7pm. Then, with a group ofnatives and out-of-towners, we went todinner. They tell me there are three major enclaves ofArgentine tango in North America—New York,San Francisco and Montreal. I have just returnedfrom a weekend at our neighbors’ in Canada andI am excited! The invitation came about through friendsin Toronto whom I met in Buenos Aires. From Toronto we drove five hours to theisland city known for its mountain anddelicious bagels (yes, better than NewYork’s!).There are supposedly about 2,000tango dancers in Montreal and I wouldnot dispute that after seeing the numberof milongas and the turn-out at each. Wearrived Friday and headed over toDancing Mocha Joe’s. A few steps downand you are in a pleasant place with abar and a large wooden dance floor. There are tables near the entry and moreacross the room—for smokers. Themusic was mostly traditional with somesalsa thrown in. Many Montrealers go toBuenos Aires frequently and the highlevel of dancing was evidence of boththis and of excellent resident teachers. Itwas a pleasure to see good dancing withvery few "acrobatics." Afterwards westopped at the 24 hour Maison de Bagelto get fresh baked bagels straight out ofthe oven.On Saturday night we had choicesand opted for both. Mocha Joe’s was ourfirst stop but there were few dancers andthe music was less traditional with many"undanceable" songs thrown in. Therewas also a lot more salsa, swing androck. We left after a few hours and wentto Tango Libre. Here the place washopping. Tango Libre had a good dancefloor, great music and a lively crowd. Westayed until near closing time, past 3am,but of course stopped on the way to pickOur last stop was at The Academie, ahuge space with a great wooden dancefloor. I heard numerous apologies, bothin English and French, about the ongoingremodeling and how everything was indisarray. But I found it perfect even inthis transition state and the place wasfilled. Dancing again was lovely and wecontinued until our feet gave no more, wecertainly could not last ‘til closing time at4am! And naturally, we stopped for thelast time to get a load of bagels to takehome.I am already planning my nextescapade to this northern tango haven.Care to join me?Inexpensive lodging in MontrealMarta’s tango house: An Argentineanwith 3 rooms to rent for approximatelyUS$15/night or $21 with breakfast. Greatlocation in Montreal’s Little Italy, near allthe milongas. By recommendation only,so if you are interested, contact me.Helene’s: Another Montrealer who willrent her her apartment for veryreasonable rates. Anotherrecommendation only. Convent: Roomsfor about US$25/night.3 Tango Noticas July 2004
