FMX 2012 / WElCoME
WELCOME
May 8th to May 11th, FMX, the 17th Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Transmedia, once more presents the extraordinary creativity of the digital industry
through a broad range of exciting topics. Looking back on nearly 20 years of history, FMX has been witness to amazing achievements. Today, it is one of the most important
international events for digital entertainment and a focal point for professionals and aspiring talents from all over the world.
FMX and the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film, which take place simultaneously, have contributed to the transformation of the Stuttgart region into one of the most
significant locations for Animation, Effects and Games in Germany and beyond. The international achievements of local players vividly illustrate this. Last year’s Academy
nomination for Studio Soi’s "The Gruffalo" and Pixomondo’s creation of visual effects for Martin Scorsese’s award-winning "Hugo" are excellent examples. They emphasize the
kind of outstanding performance that companies in Baden-Wuerttemberg are capable of.
The state government holds digital, animation-related techniques in highest regard, as driving factors in the further progression of Baden-Wuerttemberg's relevance in film
and media services and is committed to advancing this development. For this reason, I’m especially grateful for the support FMX receives from the entire Animation, Effects
and Games industry.
Without the companies that scout talent or present their new tools at the Recruiting Hub or Marketplace and without the speakers, who openly talk about their professional
experiences, FMX would not be possible. In addition to the numerous partners, supporters and sponsors, I would like to say a special thank you to Thomas Haegele and his
team. It is their competence and extraordinary dedication that makes FMX thrive. This year they present VFX Supervisor and Academy Award winner Rob Legato as one of
their conference highlights; he will talk about his visual effects work on "Hugo".
I’m convinced that all FMX visitors will enjoy the warm, creative FMX atmosphere –
I wish you inspiring encounters, new contacts and rewarding conversation.
CONFERENCE / VIRTuAl PRoduCTIoN
The Virtual Production track at FMX 2012 is supported by
With the success of "Avatar", Virtual Production exploded on the scene as a new, effective way to make movies in the digital age. Centered on the ability for filmmakers to
interact with virtual worlds in real time, Virtual Production enables an iterative workflow that is blurring the boundaries between pre-production, production and post.
Join our presenters as we study how Virtual Productions are crafted today, from World Building, to Previsualization, to the Virtual Production stage.
Curators: D. Morin, Autodesk; R. Frankel, Proof; D. Gouge, Weta Digital; Chris Edwards, The Third Floor; E. Hooks; A. McDowell, 5D Institute
VIRTUAL PRODUCTION oPENING
The Virtual Production track at FMX 2012 is curated by a team from Autodesk, the
5D Institute, the Previsualization Society, the Virtual Production Committee, and Weta
Digital. In this opening session the curators will share the current thinking on Virtual
Production from the point of view of their respective organization, and they will set
the stage for the 16 presentations focused on Virtual Production that will take place
over the next three days. It is a roadmap for the track that you don’t want to miss.
Curator / Host: D. Morin, Autodesk
VIRTUAL PRODUCTION WoRld BuIldING
First, the world has to be built. World Building is the new metaphor for the design,
creation and actualizing of the story space in digital narrative media. Curated by the
5D Institute, this first segment of the Virtual Production track addresses narrative
design thinking, the iterative and immersive experience of creating new worlds for
storytelling in general, and Virtual Production in particular. Through World Building,
production designers express the full arc of design’s role through narrative media.
Curator / Host: A. McDowell, 5D Institute
VIRTUAL PRODUCTION PREVIS
What will you do in the world once it is built? Previsualization is the collaborative
process that generates preliminary versions of shots or sequences, predominantly
using 3D animation tools and a virtual environment. It enables filmmakers to visually
explore creative ideas, plan technical solutions, and communicate a shared vision
for efficient production. Curated by the Previsualization Society, this segment of
the Virtual Production track presents some of the most recent uses of Previs in
moviemaking, an essential step in a full-fledged Virtual Production workflow.
Curators / Hosts: C. Edwards, The Third Floor; R. Frankel, Proof
The Production track puts you right in front of the director: What kind of VFX does
he want and need? Shekhar Kapur, award-winning director of acclaimed films such
as "Elizabeth" and "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" and the German director Achim
Bornhak discuss their personal perspectives. How important are VFX in their work
and what expectations do they bring towards VFX companies and the services and
effects they provide? In addition, Rainer Soehnlein, Lenard F. Krawinkel and Ludwig
von Reiche discuss the often contrary natures of artistic creativity and animation
technology. Moreover, Vispop’s John Dietz speaks about the relationship between
This track will focus on the potential of today’s VFX technology and the difficulties
in maintaining creative control when tools, models and modes of production
become increasingly complex. Software vendors and studios will also discuss where
innovation originates, how and when they work together to raise the state of the art
in technology, and what they each value most from the other side of this equation.
Curators: B. Robertson, D. Maas
CONFERENCE / EFFECTS
EFFECTS VES: EXCHANGE
Visual effects enhance live-action footage with other filmed or computer-generated
imagery to create a world, explosion or stunt that would otherwise be impossible
to create. VFX are everywhere and oftentimes are completely invisible – more often
than not a filmmaker will add a cloud to a background or a tear to an actresses’ face
and you'd never know it wasn't real. The use of visual effects is now more pervasive
than ever and is taking up more and more of each show's budget.
The Visual Effects Society (VES) is looking forward to presenting a powerful series
of presentations on topics ranging from Academy Award winning Supervisor Rob
Legato sharing inside secrets behind "Hugo" to hearing from Jay Redd on "Men in
Black III" and many more. The VES, which represents the best visual effects artists
in the world, will show how the use of visual effects affects everything from creative
decisions to the economic bottom line in the delivery of all entertainment globally.
Curator / Host: E. Roth, Visual Effects Society
EFFECTS SHoWCASES
This year’s most influential movies and topics get some extra behind-the-scenes
attention. No less than three presentations dissect the extraterrestrial visual effects
of Andrew Stanton’s extravaganza "John Carter", and other highlights include
presentations on Guy Ritchie’s "Sherlock Holmes II: A Game of Shadows", George
Lucas’ production "Red Tails", the game turned movie "Battleship" and the box office
hit "The Hunger Games". Further slots focus on miniature effects in a digital world
and the ambition of staying true to oneself in the face of growing commercialization.
Hosts: B. Flückiger, D. Maas, B. Robertson, E. Roth
EFFECTS TElEVISIoN
Enjoying your home cinema? Successful VFX for television balance budgetary
concerns with artistic aspirations - a considerable challenge that popular series such
as "Game of Thrones", "Bones" and "Borgia" clearly manage. Get even closer to your
favorite shows as their supervisors talk about the future of effects and production
processes. Presentations will also include vivid discussions on the creation of
convincing VFX on TV budgets.
Host: K. Delventhal
EFFECTS CoMMERCIAlS
Commercials keep their finger on the pulse of time, quickly adapting to new trends
and developments. Companies such as unexpected or The Mill are here to help you
keep up the pace, demonstrating their VFX based approach to commercials. In a
similar vein, employees from Glassworks shed light on crucial aspects of producing
photorealistic characters, building CG environments and previsualizing artistic
visions.
Host: K. Delventhal
EFFECTS IN INdIA
Ambitious VFX, top quality feature and TV animation and innovation in stereo
conversion – increasingly, producers in the USA, Europe and Asia are turning
to India’s leading VFX and animation studios. Producers in India, home of the
world’s most prolific film industry, are now demanding VFX to the same standard
as Hollywood. Bollywood smash hit "Ra.One" recently received the National Award,
India’s highest award for excellence, for the special effects created by Mumbai-based
Red Chillies VFX. Innovation in developing effective communication between distant
locations is at the core of these success stories as new pipelines evolve to deal with
ever-increasing complexity and demand.
Curator / Host: S. Page, Dreamworks Animation
EFFECTS IN GERMANy
In an increasingly challenging international VFX market, work on big productions is
being shared by companies all over the world. More and more major US productions
give parts of or even full visual effects budgets to German companies. But what
about German productions themselves? The track "Effects in Germany" tries to
shed a light on feature and commercial work for our home market. There is a vivid
industry of not so well known VFX postproduction companies who deliver impressive
quality - sometimes with fractions of the international budgets for an equal amount
of work. What do German companies do to face the challenge of delivering visual
effects and animation for a sophisticated German audience? We will find out here.
game series and their aesthetic and visual evolution. More than a nostalgic look
back, this track takes apart the successful long-term visions behind gaming favorites
such as "Ghost Recon", "Mass Eff ect 3", "The Witcher 2", "SSX" and "Mortal Kombat".
Get further glimpses into the games industry via presentations by industry leaders
such as Bioware, Blitz Games, CD Projekt RED, EA Sports, GEElab, Microsoft Studios,
GAMES MAdE IN GERMANy
Germany has always been an important consumer market for digital games, but
its role as a production base of international relevance has only evolved within
the last 10 years. The Berlin-based developer yager, for example, has established
a reputation as a high end hub for AAA game development through their current
project "Spec Ops: The Line" (2K). Other fi elds are even dominated creatively by
German developers. Daedalic (Hamburg) has taken the pole position in adventure
games, with masterpieces like "Deponia" or "The Whispered World". Another driving
force in the constant enhancement of the German development scene comes from
the independents. Black Pants (Kassel) with their award winning project "Tiny & Big",
Berlin-based developer Kunst-Stoff - "The great Jitters: Pudding Panic" or Krystian
Majewski (Cologne) and his highly appraised game "Trauma", are examples for the
excellence in making great games on a small budget.
TECH TALKS lIGHTING ANd RENdERING
There has always been a strong push in the Visual Eff ects and Animation community
towards more realism. This has recently taken two major venues: various forms of
global illuminations (point-based, raytraced) and physically based rendering.
Obviously this has led to re-training of artists, as well as designing of new lighting
tools (on top of the forced pipeline overhaul). We will survey some of these new
approaches and consequences in this track, with case studies from various studios.
FOCUS ON MoNTRéAl
A cultural complement to the epicenter of Vancouver, Montréal has developed into
a central focal point for the creative and digital entertainment industry with its own
specific characteristics and trademarks. VFX companies and other players provide
insights into the various services Montréal’s companies have to offer – spanning
from VFX for the movie "Underworld: Awakening" to tools that intertwine the film and
game industries.
FOCUS ON VANCouVER
Vancouver is a world-class destination for international creative talent. Government
support through tax incentives and R&D programs has led to the current explosion
of visual effects, animation and gaming studios choosing Vancouver as a prime
location to do business. With strong support from both the private and public
sectors, Vancouver has positioned itself as hub for the creative economy. Local
industry leaders have a strong voice in the development of policy and strategy which
ensures continued growth.
As the opportunity to work on some of the most challenging and high profile projects
increases, Vancouver has become a prime destination for international artists and
other creative talent. An added benefit to working on world class productions is the
ability to take advantage of Vancouver’s unique combination of lifestyle, culture and
spectacular outdoors.
CONFERENCE / FoCuS oN...
FOCUS ON ESToNIA
When people talk about Estonian animation, they always refer to its long and
dignified history, which is primarily known for world-famous artistic author films. By
today, however, the complete picture of Estonian animation is much more colorful.
A number of small studios have appeared. They have taken a more commercial
course and love to mix different animation techniques with motion graphics and VFX,
creating a modern visual language that is new to the Estonian audiovisual scene.
Two of those young and fresh companies will conquer the FMX conference stage as
well – FrostFX will talk about their passion for creating visually aesthetic CG fluids and
TOLM will take you along on their quest for the Holy Grail in storytelling and finding
the right path in your professional field. Counterbalancing the new wave Estonian
focus at FMX includes also internationally praised Nukufilm, the oldest and largest
stop motion studio in Northern Europe that represents a pure handcraft, which has
become more and more desirable in a world full of digital noise.
Curator / Host: H. Pikkov, AnimaCampus
FOCUS ON PolANd
Focus on Poland reflects recent trends and developments in this exciting region of
Eastern Europe, demonstrating its creative achievements and potential. Renowned
animation studio Human Ark presents its current experiences on commercials and
films, The Chimney Pot talks about the post-production on Marek Koterski’s feature
film "Man, Chicks Are Just Different" and Alvernia Studios presents their production of
motion capture in the game sequel "Witcher 2".
TRANSMEDIA SESSIoNS
We are seeing a profound shift in perspective across all media sectors. Crossmedial
thinking has become the business method. Transmedia will discuss how to build
professional pipelines for transmedia development, production and distribution.
Henry Jenkins (UCLA), author of "Convergence Culture" will give us an academic
scope on where we stand today. Nuno Bernado (beactive), author of "The
Producer’s Guide to Transmedia", will share with us his many years of transmedial
practice. Scott Walker (Brain Candy), founder of Transmedia Los Angeles, will
speak on the systematic integration of users. Femke Wolting (submarine channel),
Amsterdam-based producer of "Collapsus", will showcase their award winning
transmedia projects.
The day ends with a discussion in cooperation with the 5D Institute on the Future of
Storytelling. Panelists are Henry Jenkins, Shekhar Kapur and Alex McDowell, director
of 5D Institute.
Curator / Host: I. von Staden, Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg
TRANSMEDIA ECHTzEIT
Not all animation is made for the big or the small screen. Inspired by architecture,
theatre, comics or mathematics, these abstract artists make fi lms, promos and
commercials. But they also prove to be versatile Transmedia artists: They create
installations, performances and invent their own defi nition of screen and projection –
a dedication that has brought them into museums, galleries and clubs.
Animation isn't necessarily frame-by-frame. It can also be live and real-time. Real
and virtual do not contradict each other but blend smoothly. While opting for very
diff erent software solutions and approaches they share the idea that the internet
is not a threat but a challenge that opens up a myriad of new possibilities how to
express, fi nance and (self-)market themselves as artists.
François Chalet’s almost mathematical animation style is crisp, precise and has a
fresh and emotional appeal on big and on tiny screens alike. Friedrich Kirschner
playfully exploits computer game technology and his own charming low-tech tools to
invigorate puppetry and performance. Max Hattler blends old and new techniques
and concepts with amazing results.
How do technical developments infl uence the way we watch movies? While current
fi lms like Peter Jackson’s "The Hobbit" are shot at 48fps, Doug Trumbull is already
paving the way with his Showscan Digital process at 120fps. In his keynote he will
deliver insights into the history of cinema from both photographic and projection
aspects. In addition, Trumbull will discuss the advantages of higher frame rates with
RFX founder Ray Feeney and renowned fi lm journalist Bill Desowitz.
The presentation by ARRI on the future of digital cameras will complement this track.
In the rapidly changing world of digital entertainment, virtual humans are taking on
increasingly important roles. In cinema, virtual human actors, virtual human digital
makeup, and digitally enhanced dramatic performances are becoming commonplace.
In the world of games, virtual human characters are becoming ever more complex
and important. In life, virtual human interfaces are popping up everywhere from VH
bank tellers, to digital voices helping you on the phone. The FMX Virtual Humans
The cultural and economic challenges of creating animated family
entertainment in Europe.
May 9, 10am – 1pm
Haus der Wirtschaft, Meidinger Saal
This year’s conference looks at how and why countries such as France, Denmark and
others have successfully managed to build up a strong, diverse animation industry
as part of their own, home-grown children’s media culture.
What fundamental cultural, political and economic changes are necessary to
strengthen German children’s media culture and to shape the animation industry
so as to enable its brands, content and concepts to be exploited on a national and
international scale? How is it possible for the European animation industry as a
whole to succeed in maintaining its cultural diversity and own storytelling traditions
and at the same time to prove itself on the world market? What does the industry
need in terms of financing mechanisms in order to achieve sustainable growth and a
strengthening of European co-productions?
The APD Conference will be held in co-operation with the German Producers Alliance.
