COE leads the way
with UA’s first fully
online degree program
The University of Akron made obtaining a top-notch college
education flexible, affordable and convenient when it offered
its first fully online degree program in fall 2010. The program,
a 30- to 36-credit M.S. in Postsecondary Technical Education
through the College of Education, prepares students for
jobs training adults in business and educational settings. The
online program appeals to busy professionals, those balancing
family obligations and those who live far away.
“The average student in our technical education program is
older than 40 and works full time while pursuing a master’s
degree part time,” says Susan Olson, chair of UA’s Department
of Educational Foundations and Leadership. “An online degree
program is exactly what these students want and need.”
The College of Education
COE E D U C A T I O N H I G H L I G H T S 2010 – 2011
As a STEM-intensive (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
institution, The University of Akron has invested considerable
time, energy and money in a variety of STEM initiatives. And even
though the College of Education is not technically considered a
STEM discipline, we have much going on in the STEM area.
The college has been a full partner in the
development of the National Inventors Hall
of Fame (NIHF) School that was launched
in the fall of 2009 in conjunction with
Akron Public Schools (APS). Our faculty and
administrators formulated plans for the
school, helped to create the curriculum
and participated in the selection of the
school’s teachers. Read more inside
regarding a large grant that UA secured
to reproduce the STEM school model
across Ohio.
The college is currently involved in designing
the plans for an APS STEMM (the extra “M”
is for Medicine) high school that would
open in fall 2012. The proposed STEMM high
school, which would be located at Central
Hower, adjacent to the north side of campus,
represents an opportunity for high school
students to take early college courses
and participate in college-lab internships
since the plans include establishing UA labs
at the site.
Finally, we are in the midst of designing a
STEM Academy that would be a focal point
for all COE math and science education
initiatives, in addition to its work in training
future STEM educators at the elementary
and secondary levels. I am proud of our
contributions in these areas and of all the
people who make them happen.
I hope that you enjoy reading about the
many accomplishments of the past year in
this issue of Education Highlights.
THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
We are pleased to announce that the Marriage and Family Counseling/
Therapy (MFC/T) programs through the Department of Counseling were
reaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family
Therapy Education (COAMFTE) for the next six years. We offer kudos to
Patricia Parr, MFC/T program coordinator, and Karin Jordan, department chair,
for overseeing the yearlong process.
With their accreditation by both COAMFTE
and the Council for the Accreditation for
Counseling and Related Educational
Programs, this makes UA’s MFC/T programs
the only dually accredited programs in
Ohio training marriage and family
counselors/therapists, and one of a few
dually accredited marriage and family
therapy programs in the nation. n
Center for Child Development
earns national accreditation
The Center for Child Development (CCD), jointly sponsored with the COE
and the College of Health Sciences and Human Services (HSHS), earned
accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young
Children. NAEYC is the nation’s leading organization of early childhood
professionals. The accreditation is valid for the next five years.
To earn NAEYC accreditation, the CCD
went through an extensive self-study process,
measuring the program and its services
against the 10 NAEYC early childhood
program standards and more than 400
related accreditation criteria. The program
received NAEYC accreditation after
an on-site visit by its assessors. The CCD
received an excellent rating meeting
all standards and criterion.
Marriage and
Family Counseling/Therapy
programs attain six-year
accreditation
“The staff worked relentlessly to ensure a
smooth accreditation process. Through their
efforts and dedication, we achieved very
high standards,” says Yetty Michael, center
director. “NAEYC accreditation lets families
in our community know that children in our
program are getting the best care and early
learning experiences possible.” n
COE SPEAKER SERIES
Hosted this spring, three dynamic individuals
discussed topics of relevance through COE’s
Speaker Series.
Dr. Marian Maxfield
Problem-based Learning Seminars
An associate lecturer in the Department of Educational Foundations
and Leadership, Dr. Marian Maxfield gave a three-part seminar
series on problem-based learning (PBL) in March. PBL provides a
learning environment students require to resolve everyday problems
while applying previous and learning new knowledge.
In her seminars, Maxfield taught participants how to develop complex
and real-world problems to allow for knowledge connection.
She introduced learning templates and discussed different types
and methods of assessments, including group, individual, formative,
summative, student and teacher.
Dr. Joanne E. Goodell
CSUTeach
“Transforming secondary teacher preparation: Opportunities and
challenges implementing CSUTeach” was the topic presented
by Dr. Joanne Goodell, an associate professor at Cleveland State
University. She discussed the CSUTeach program, why the model
was chosen, and some of the opportunities and challenges faced
during the planning stages.
CSUTeach focuses on math and science. It features innovative new
professional development courses that combine content material
and pedagogy, the ability to have early and continuing positive
experiences teaching in the classroom, induction support for new
teachers to help ensure success, and financial support for students,
including scholarships and paid internships.
Dr. Diana Biordi and Dr. Elaine Fisher
Academic Career Workshop
The College of Nursing’s Diana L. Biordi, associate dean, and
Elaine M. Fisher, associate professor, taught workshop participants
about setting goals, crafting an academic vision, career mapping,
negotiating and networking.
“I enjoyed Dr. Biordi and Dr. Fisher’s presentation, and I valued
the thoughtful comments that were made during the question-andanswer
session,” says Leisa Martin, assistant professor (CIS).
THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
STEM grant aimed to develop
initiatives statewide
4
The College of Education STEM program, in collaboration with Akron Public Schools (APS)
and UA’s Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, received a $560,000 grant from the
Ohio Department of Education and Ohio Board of Regents. Building on the successful
implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) at the National Inventors Hall of Fame
(NIHF) School, the grant aims to develop a Web-based platform for replication of PBL
throughout the Ohio STEM Learning Network (OSLN) and the state.
The NIHF School represents a shift in education from an instructional model to a learning
model where teachers are “coaches” guiding their “learners.” PBL is designed to engage
students in the learning process and to activate ownership. Through discovery, inquiry and
engagement, PBL fosters imagination and creativity while developing in-depth understanding.
The school currently is home to 300 middle school learners in grades five through seven.
To set the PBL replication process in motion,
a professional learning community (PLC) has
been formed at Hyre Middle School and the
Akron Opportunity Center (AOC). The PLCs
will engage in professional development
opportunities, collaboration with experts from
community and industry STEM partners, and
discussions with colleagues from the NIHF
School and UA. The PLCs will then design and
implement a pilot PBL unit in their schools.
Along the way, the process will be documented
by the project team, members of the PLCs,
e-Read Ohio, directed by Lisa Lenhart of the
Department of Curricular and Instructional
Studies (CIS), and the Active Research Methods
Project, co-directed by Sandra Spickard
Prettyman of the Department of Educational
Foundations and Leadership. The information
gathered will provide the data and resources
necessary to build the online infrastructure.
Once launched, the Web-based platform will
serve as a vehicle for others across the OSLN
and the state of Ohio to effectively implement
this approach.
Educators from UA and Akron Public Schools
came together to learn more about the PBL process
from Marian Maxfield, associate lecturer (EFL).
“The STEM Demonstration Project will
enable us to launch our expansion of STEM
strategies to give all students across our
district the opportunity to excel,” says Ellen
McWilliams, assistant superintendent,
curriculum and instruction for APS.
The grant will aid the process by documenting
the multidimensional support STEM learning
requires, including planning, subject matter
expertise, job-embedded professional
learning, mentoring, coaching, structural
supports and resources, data collection and
analysis, and other activities. Once the
process is documented, STEM schools and
PBL will be available to be duplicated in
the region and statewide.
A consortium that includes UA’s Buchtel
College of Arts and Sciences and
College of Education as well as Kent State
University, Hiram College and APS, has
been engaged in ongoing planning and
collaboration to advance STEM learning in
Northeast Ohio. n
skills emphasized at the NIHF-STEM Middle School,
where many UA students work in the classrooms.
Members of the first cohort of Woodrow Wilson
Teaching Fellows were honored at a luncheon May 31
at UA. Following the luncheon, a tour was taken of
various teaching and cultural sites in Akron and Canton.
Nineteen students comprise the first UA
cohort of Woodrow Wilson Ohio Teaching
Fellows. Beginning their programs this
summer are: Elliott Bardun, Pamela Bowers,
Leanna Colosimo, Sara Conry, Duane
Dungee, Yao-Min Huang, Derek Light,
Jillian Little, Lindsay McCorcle, William
Metcalf, Kaleigh Moore, Chad Ostrowski,
Shawn Roberts, Sara Rouse, Karen Smith,
Sanchez Starks, Heather Stoll, Kevin White
and Rachel Widman.
The Fellows will receive a $30,000 stipend
for their concentrated master’s work, with a
three-year commitment to teach in high-need
Ohio high schools thereafter. UA will partner
with Akron Public Schools and the Canton
City Schools to prepare the Fellows for their
three-year commitment through intensive
clinical work.
“We are excited to begin to work with a very
diverse, yet incredibly qualified group of
Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellows,” says
Lynne Pachnowski, UA’s project director.
“This program has the potential to transform
math and science education in Northeast
Ohio, and in urban schools in particular.”
There were many key members from the COE
and other UA colleges who worked to make
the program a success. Under the leadership
of Pachnowski, professor (CIS), the committee
THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
Students in the Instructional Technology Applications
course, a core undergraduate class in the COE,
immersed themselves in an idea that led them to
Columbus to a standing-room only audience.
Juniors and seniors across disciplines take this class taught by John Milam, assistant professor
(CIS). At the onset of the course students determine what their learning path will be. This
particular class wanted to incorporate problem-based learning (PBL) and technology to
showcase the innovation and excellent work at National Inventors of Fame (NIHF) STEM
School in downtown Akron.
Using the PBL approach, six students presented
their integrated technology project idea to the
NIHF-STEM school. Through a collaborative
process, students in the course created an
informational Prezi presentation for the STEM
school parent open house in February.
Prezi is a Web-based presentation tool using
a map layout and zooming to show contextual
relationships. It displays information much
like PowerPoint, but in a seamless, cutting
edge way.
In nine short weeks, the students learned
about Prezi and worked to gather information
and interviews to showcase the school.
Students interviewed officials from the STEM
school, partners such as COE Dean Mark D.
Shermis and Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, and
also interviewed students and their parents.
The Prezi included STEM school student
Students ‘wow’ at
state level
work, the school’s philosophy, approaches
to curriculum using PBL, and local, state and
national recognition of the program, including
a CNN-TV segment.
Upon presenting their Prezi to accolades,
Milam and his students decided to submit
their ideas to the Ohio Educational Technology
Conference. This is the third largest state
educational technology conference in the
country – more than 6,500 educational
innovators gather to share their successes
and challenges. The COE and UA’s Institute
for Teaching and Learning supported the
students’ trip to Columbus.
Students Aimee Bassett, Ben Hymes,
Megan Knight, Ryan Reed, Andrew Weaver,
Stephanie Yoder and Mark Zajaczkowski
represented UA very well at the conference.
Their presentation was so well received that
Aimee Bassett, Stephanie Yoder, Ryan Reed, John Milam
they were asked to present again at the
conference – almost unheard of!
Sadly, due to the weather, they were not
able to commit.
“Our students were able to advance their
knowledge in technology so much so that
seasoned educators were asking for their
advice on how to implement this in their
classrooms – it was very empowering,”
says Milam. n
Knight Grant recognizes UA’s
diversity and inclusive excellence
UA will work to increase the recruitment, retention and graduation
rates of black male students, with a $425,000 grant from the John S. and
James L. Knight Foundation. John E. Queener, a professor in the
Department of Counseling, was a co-principal investigator on the grant.
Nationally and locally, college retention and graduation rates are starkly lower
for African-American males than their classmates. For example, during the 2006-07
academic year, the first-year retention rate for African-American males at UA was
46 percent, compared to 54 percent for African-American females and 66 percent
for all first-year students. n
GED knowledge to be
strengthened for teachers and
adult learners alike
The College of Education received a $63,262 grant from the Ohio Board
of Regents to strengthen GED and pre-GED teachers’ knowledge of both
pedagogy and content in mathematics education. Project collaborators
include UA’s Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences and Adult Basic Literacy
Education (ABLE) GED programs (Canton City Schools, Project Learn of
Summit County, Massillon City Schools and Wayne County Career Center).
ABLE program educators often work with
limited resources and experiences in
mathematics, yet they devote their time to
work with adult learners who have rededicated
themselves to pursuing a high school
diploma. The comprehensive GED programs
involved support and facilitate students
transitioning to technical, community and
university programs to continue
their education.
Approximately 30 teachers are being
recruited from adult education programs
in Northeast Ohio to provide a series of
workshops with current GED teachers. Their
workshops will engage participants in
learning math content and best practice for
teaching math as well as developing lessons
that reflect differentiated instruction.
THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
College of Education
professor named
fellow in two prestigious
organizations
James R. Rogers, professor (counseling), was named
an American Psychological Association Fellow in
the Society of Counseling Psychology. A fellowship is
an honor bestowed for extraordinary accomplishment
to an individual whose contributions generally
advance and enrich counseling psychology as a field.
Fellows are selected by peers on the basis of evidence
of prolonged higher-level performance that is
recognizable at a national level.
Rogers was also named a Fellow of the International Academy of Suicide Research
by the IASR Board of Directors.
“The recognition of being named a Fellow validates that Jim is an international expert
and a major contributor to the field of suicidology,” notes Karin Jordan, chair of the
Department of Counseling.
Rogers began teaching a new course at UA this spring about suicide. More than 34,000
suicides occurred in the United States in 2007, with an average of almost 95 per day.
The course discusses theories, treatment and prevention efforts for suicide.
Rogers has also assumed direction for the newly created Consortium for Leadership
in Evaluation, Assessment and Research. CLEAR provides quality evaluation and research
services to K-16 schools, mental health agencies, and other educational and mental
health service entities, locally and regionally. n
Four students achieve
perfect score on Praxis II
Four COE students received perfect scores
on their Praxis II, Principles of Learning and
Teaching (PLT) test this academic year.
Kelly Gleason, Jessica Murphy, Brittany
Nielsen and Jennifer Rhodes achieved a
status that not many reach.
The PLT examination assesses a beginning
teacher’s knowledge in such areas as
educational psychology, human growth
and development, classroom management,
instructional design, and evaluation
and assessment.
According to Gleason, she had to doublecheck
her online score to make sure it was,
My Tennis World
Through the Department of Sport Science
and Wellness Education, physical education
and sport study majors are getting a leg up
on their competition upon graduating.
Through an innovative field experience called
My Tennis World, UA students who would
not typically take special education courses
are working, one-on-one, with children, ages
6 to 18, from Akron Public Schools, who have
developmental disabilities. The program’s
goal is to facilitate learning for UA students
as well as the children in a physical exercise
orientated environment.
Under the mentorship of a UA student, each
child participates in individual and group
tennis lessons taught by tennis teaching pros.
They also play on fitness-for-fun lab sessions
with Nintendo Wii Fit, participate in swimming
activities in UA’s Student Recreation and
Wellness Center, and learn computer skills.
“The experience of getting to work with these
kids this semester has been amazing,” says
Samantha Sandmann, a physical education
major in her junior year. “I hope in the future
we can offer a wider variety of sports and
activities for the kids. Overall, I think it is a
great program – not only aspiring physical
education teachers, but for the students that
participate in it as well.”
The program is due in large part to a grant
from the United States Tennis Association
(USTA) and USTA Serves. Since the sponsorship
in 2008, more than 250 children have
participated, matched with an equal number
of UA student-mentors. The program benefits
from a strong support team of UA faculty,
graduate and student assistants, Akron Public
Schools special education teachers, physical
education teachers, teaching assistants, physical
therapists, tennis teaching professionals
and the ongoing support of UA’s Rec Center.
PACE – Growing the
game of tennis
Physical Activity/Tennis and Character/
Health/Nutrition Education (PACE), a
service-learning project funded by the United
States Tennis Association (USTA) and USTA
Serves, has helped more than 2,000 minority
and disadvantaged youth in Akron since
July 2009. Mary Jo MacCracken, professor
(SSWE) and Jada Ransome, undergraduate
student, are the driving forces behind the
dynamic program.
The goal of PACE is to teach Akron Public
School children how to play tennis. A long
the way, they also get lessons in sportsmanship,
help with coordination skills and
character education, and a place to let their
frustrations out – the court. “We are bringing
COE E D U C A T I O N H I G H L I G H T S 2010 – 2011
something to these students that they
wouldn’t get normally,” says Ransome.
“We are teaching them life skills through the
game of tennis, and educating them about
healthy lifestyles and nutrition.”
Meanwhile, the UA students gain invaluable
community service experience by working
with populations that are often new to them.
The program has been so successful that
USTA asked MacCracken and her students
to replicate it in other Ohio school districts.
She is now working with tennis professionals
in Columbus, Dover and Painesville to
replicate the program.
Quantitative and qualitative evidence gives
support to the view that PACE is one of the
best of its kind in the nation.
“We have big plans and high hopes for the
future of this program,” says MacCracken.
“There are 10,000 students in the Akron
area and we are excitedly looking forward to
expanding this program.” n
» Stacey Buser, senior instructor (SSWE) and Carrie Fister, instructor (SSWE), participated in
THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
If you build it they will come!
In August 2010, COE students were among the 200 volunteers who built a
new, safe playground at Patterson Park in Akron’s North Hill neighborhood.
Education students Jordan Ferrell, Tiffany Brenner and Julie Humes joined Dr. Shelley
Waltonen-Moore, of the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership, for
the daylong project. Sponsors for the project were the city of Akron, Kaboom!, John S. and
James L. Knight Foundation, and North Akron Baseball Association.
“This was one of the most rewarding
experiences I have had in my years at Akron,”
says Ferrell. “I got to be a part of making
something that children can enjoy for years
and years to come! I am very glad to be a
part of the build team, and it is an experience
I will never forget.”
The volunteers built the playground in one
day, through planning, teamwork and hard
work. Brenner mixed concrete, which she
says was tough, but well worth the effort.
“Kids from the neighborhood stopped to
stare as we worked to build the playground,”
she says. “It was a great feeling knowing that
I was helping make a place for them to play
and have fun. I love showing people what we
helped build.”
Humes, Ferrell and Brenner represented the
Dean’s Dozen, a group of extraordinary
students who act as ambassadors, spreading
their enthusiasm for the COE and UA at
numerous events for the Office of Admissions,
as well as academic and alumni/donor
activities. They also advise the administration
on key issues facing students and participate in
leadership and service learning activities. n
My time in
France –
A student
perspective
We spent three weeks in Besançon at the
renowned Centre Linguistique Appliquée,
where we took French lessons and learned
the ins-and-outs of the French system of
education. While in Besançon, we stayed
with host families. My family was very
accommodating as they were also hosting
other exchange students. I lived with two
students from Mexico, one from Germany
and one from Turkey. It was a really
incredible multicultural experience!
From there we were sent to our individual
teaching assignments. I was posted for three
months in the city of Reims, which is the
capital of the Champagne region. The city is
home to one of the most beautiful old
cathedrals in all of Europe. The Notre
Dame of Reims is almost 800 years old, and
it is where the kings of France used to be
crowned. There is so much history there that
I sometimes felt as though I had traveled
back in time.
I taught English Language Arts to the
equivalent of seventh, eighth and ninth
graders. My students were in what is known
as “European Section” classes, which are
very advanced and taught in all different
languages. Some students take their history
classes in English, for example, while others
take science in Spanish. These dual language
programs are very competitive. Thus, the
» THE FIRST UA5K:
Run @ the Roo, held Sunday, April 17, was
a huge success. Thanks to the more than
300 runners who came out in support
of the event, which was sponsored by
the Department of Sport Science and
Wellness Education and the Sport
Science Academy.
students were of exceptional caliber. I taught
them as if they were American students and
introduced them to American pedagogy.
They do not practice cooperative learning
nearly to the extent that we do here in the
states, and I believe that they enjoyed
working together.
This project is great for teachers because
it shows them what it is like to be different. In
our increasingly diversified classrooms,
it is imperative that all teachers understand
COE E D U C A T I O N H I G H L I G H T S 2010 – 2011
Ten of us arrived in Besançon, France, in late August. We didn’t know
each other, aside from the three days that we spent together at UA for a
predeparture orientation. We all came from different schools and
backgrounds. There were math, English, French and science teachers.
what it is like to be handicapped due to
disconnects in communication. These
disconnects are not always linguistic, either,
which is the most important lesson that I
learned in the classroom.
I will continue to learn and grow from this
experience for years to come. I am so
thankful to everybody involved in the project.
I don’t know if I will ever be able to thank
them enough. n
Robert A. Dubick
Three scholarship recipients
were chosen, based on a juried
paper competition:
Robert A. Dubick
Memorial Scholarship – giving to
the next generation
In 2002, the Robert A. Dubick Memorial Scholarship for Ethical Leadership
in Education was created to aid graduate students who possess high ethical
leadership qualities. It was established to honor Dr. Dubick’s personal and
professional commitment to ethical and principled educational leadership.
Dubick was a longtime member of the UA family and, in 1993, was named an associate
professor in the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership. “He had a
respect and passion for his students’ intellectual growth and leadership successes,” says
his widow, Constance Dubick. “He was a true gentleman and lived his entire life with
the highest ethical standards.”
» First place – Frank D. Rable – “Ethical Dilemmas and Sibling Incest”
» Second place – Serife Fulya Doslovich – “Unexamined Feelings of Countertransference”
» Third place – Elizabeth Terrill – “Teaching Bioethics in Secondary School”
“I consider it a great honor to be one of the
recipients of the Robert A. Dubick Memorial
Scholarship,” says Rable. “I appreciate all
those involved in the process, including the
faculty members who judged the submissions
and Mrs. Dubick, who has continued to
support the scholarship in the memory of her
late husband. The scholarship will certainly
help me continue my graduate education.
I hope to further explore the ethical dilemma
that I discussed in my paper.”
Serving on the COE committee that selected
the winners were Megan Moore Gardner,
committee chair (EFL); Renee Mudrey-
Camino, interim committee chair (EFL);
Renee Mudrey-Camino
Jennifer Milam Ronald Otterstetter
Jennifer Milam (CIS), Ronald Otterstetter
(SSWE) and Robert Schwartz (counseling).
The committee considered several factors,
including the overall significance of topic,
critical thinking exhibited and timeliness.
“The competition this year was outstanding,”
says Mudrey-Camino. “There were 16
submissions from students in all departments
of the College of Education. The committee
members commented on the excellent
submissions and were very pleased to
deliberate over such exceptional work. We
would like to thank Mrs. Dubick for this
continued support to aid our students to
continue their graduate pursuits.” n
COE Alumni Board
The COE is strong and proud with 28,768 living alumni.
To help give our alumni a voice, the COE Alumni Board was formed.
The purpose of this board is to:
» Promote and enhance advancement, image and the stature of
the COE and UA community.
» Act as an advisory service to the COE, UA and COE alumni.
» Provide support and resources for current students (graduate
receptions, Educator for a Day Program, philanthropic gifts, etc.).
There are many benefits to being a board member – opportunities to
reconnect with the institution and COE leadership personnel, meetings
with the dean and former faculty, and giving back time, talent and treasure
to the institution. The board also helps to educate and provide information
on the programs and scholarships available to education students.
