The Turbulent Boundary Layer inChanging Flows and its Effect onFloodingHunter PlochMentor: Lindsay GaryAdvisor: Steve McleanOcean Engineering Lab

Boundary Layer• A boundary layer isthe layer of waterin immediateproximity of thesediment bed thatexperiencesnegative frictionalforce

The Motivation

Increased Understanding• Ecologists gain better insight for modeling• Field data more accurately understood• Flood impact prediction• Navigation made safer

Goal• To study characteristics ofchanging flow conditions• By utilizing our tools andcomputer programs, wecan form conclusionsabout changing fluidconditions to betterunderstand floodingThe Flume

The System• For a specific flowsetting, the gate andpump must be attheir respectivesettings• Once settings areestablished, datacollection can beginThe Gate

Acoustic Doppler ProfilerAn illustration of the actualADP• Records the water’svelocity along fourbeams• A computerprogram convertsthe data along eachbeam to averagevelocity andfluctuations

DataLow FlowAverage VelocityTurbulent Fluctuations

Analysis• Each graph is a snapshot of boundarylayer over a specific part of a dune• During the high flow and low flowequilibriums, there was a large amount offluctuations in water flow

Future Plans• To find a connection between fluidbehavior and bed formation• More transitions are planned to be tested.• To correlate different boundary layers withspecific parts of dunes

Reflections• Patience and tolerance are extremelyimportant qualities for scientists• Dedication and persistency will make yourefforts worth while• Murphy’s law is very real
