345The problemsFuel wastageWithout treatment, corrosion debris willaccumulate in the boiler causing increasinglimescale deposits, reduced heat transferand up to a third of a fuel bill going tocomplete waste.Boiler noiseThis increases in frequency and intensityas deposits of sludge and scale build upin an unprotected boiler. Our Benchmark is excellenceFernox strongly support the BENCHMARK initiative. Introduced inOctober 1999 Benchmark was launched to improve the standardsof installation and commissioning of central heating systems inthe UK and to encourage the regular servicing of all centralheating systems to ensure safety and efficiency. The Fernox range of protection and restoration products helpsmeet the recommendations of the code of practice, and facilitatesboth pre-commission and existing system cleansing inaccordance with BS7593:1992 “A code of practice for treatmentof water in domestic hot water and central heating systems”.PowerflushingThe most efficient and effective method ofcleansing a central heating systemCold spotsThe familiar cool low central area of aradiator indicates a build-up of blacksludge sediment that restricts flow andreduces heat. Please ask your installer for details on the Benchmark Scheme.Frequent ventingWhen the top of a radiator is cold duringoperation, either air or hydrogen is to blame.Hydrogen gas builds up as a by-productof electrolytic corrosion and is flammable(due caution is required).Pump seizure and failureThe abrasive and magnetic properties ofblack oxide sludge increase shaft andbearing wear in pumps causing them tostick or fail. The solutionPre-commission cleanse new systems and thoroughly cleanseexisting systems with Fernox Cleaner or Fernox DS-40 SystemCleaner before adding a suitable Fernox Protector to maintainefficiency and ensure the longevity of the system.Fernox, Cookson ElectronicsForsyth Road, Sheerwater, Woking, Surrey GU21 5RZTel: 01483 793200 Fax: 01483 793201Technical: 0870 870 0362Email: sales@fernox.comwww.fernox.com18 08 08 – Version 3 – FX1030

FernoxWith over 40 years experience in the field of domestic watertreatment Fernox have developed a range of products to helpmaintain the efficiency of central heating systems and to ensuretheir long term protection against the damaging effects ofcorrosion and limescale. As the original manufacturer of the very first powerflushing unit –the squid – in 1987 Fernox have continually invested in researchand development and have recently launched the new PowerflowFlushing Machine. With all the latest design features the FernoxPowerflow Flushing Machine will ensure a fast and effectivesystem clean. The cleaning and treating of centralheating systemsAll new systems should be pre-commissioncleansed in accordance with BS:7593 andBenchmark. This ensures flux residues, excess jointing compounds, mineral oil andother contaminants that can be found inthe system following installation, and thatcan effect the performance of the system orcause component failure, are removed. It is important when installing new boilers into old systemsthat all sludge is first removed from the system or this couldaccumulate in the new boiler and lead to premature failure.Additionally, in hard water areas existing systems will haveaccumulated limescale together with corrosion deposits in theheat exchanger, which could easily have reduced the boilerefficiency by over 5%.What is power flushing?Power flushing is the most efficient and effective method ofcleansing a central heating system. The principle is tocreate a powerful fresh water flow under controlledconditions to remove debris from the system.By connecting the power flushing unitto the heating circuit in place of thesystem pump, boiler or radiator the circuit canbe thoroughly cleansed of limescale andcorrosion debris. When used in conjunction with aFernox Cleaner F3a typical power flush canbe completed in 3-4 hours.Fernox Cleaners F3• Removes sludge and scale and restores heating efficiencyin existing systems• Removes flux residues and other installation debris• Eliminates boiler noise• Non-acidic neutral formulation (environmentally friendly)• Conditions the system prior to adding a Protector• Compatible with all metals and materials commonly usedin heating systemsSystem protectionWhether pre-commission cleaning new systems or restoringexisting systems, all systems should be protected against anyfurther attack from corrosion or limescale after cleansing byusing a properly formulated corrosion and scale Protector.Fernox Protectors• Provides long term protection against corrosion of all metals• Prevents build-up of black sludge• Saves on fuel bills through improved efficiency• Prevents sticking pumps• Effective scale reducer• Stops frequent ventingof radiators• Compatible with all metalsand materials commonlyused in heating systems• DWTA accredited products
