Mainstreaming occupational safety and health into university educationE u r o p e a n Ag e n c y f o r Sa f e t y a n d He a l t h a t Wo r kOverall conclusionsThere are more challenges to integrating OSH into university-level educationcompared to other levels of education. However a number of different activities aretaking place and there are various approaches that can be used and opportunitiesthat can be exploited.Ultimately the way forward should be to develop a ‘whole-university’ approachto creating a safe and healthy work and learning environment combined with riskeducation. While some laboratory work and research activities can be potentiallyhazardous, universities as a whole are not very hazardous work areas, however manydays of work can still be lost through accidents and ill-health. The approach shouldcombine OSH management to prevent risks with raising awareness and developingknowledge, skills and safe attitudes and behaviour in students and staff, includingprofessors, technical, administrative and support staff.Support is needed to transfer existing examples of good practice and interventions atthe university level and an exchange of both ideas and concrete tools is needed.10
