Welcome to Germany's 

most beautiful city 

Year by year the "European city" of Görlitz / Zgorzelec, Germany's 

eastern-most city, can pride itself on steadily growing visitor numbers. 

Travellers from both Germany and abroad are entranced by 

the city and often come a second and third time. No wonder, because 

there is so much to experience between Nikolai suburb and 

Landeskrone hill, between municipal cultural building (Dom kultury) 

and Wilhelminian quarter. 

The year 2011 will see the biggest cultural and tourist event in the 

Free State of Saxony, when this city on the Neiße river hosts the 

Third Saxon State Exhibition from May to October. Entitled "via regia 

– 800 years of movement and mobility" the exhibition enables 

visitors to experience a spectacular journey through time along one 

of central Europe's oldest trade routes. 

Görlitz can thank its location on the via regia for the city's extraordinary 

splendour, which is still very much visible today. In the 

course of only a few hundred metres there are treasures to be discovered 

here covering over half a millennium of European architectural 

history. The overall panorama of architectural art features not 

only impressive Late Gothic facades but also structures from Renaissance, 

Baroque and Art Nouveau periods, all creating a historical 

picture which is among the best preserved in central Europe. A 

total of 4,000 listed buildings, most of them restored with loving 

care, tell the story of the wealth of a bygone era. Since 1990 generous 

state support and the private commitment of its residents 

have returned Görlitz to its former glory, with the result that today 

the city is more beautiful than ever. Together with its Polish sister 

city of Zgorzelec, which lies on the eastern shore of the Neiße river, 

Görlitz declared itself to be a "European city" in 1998, setting an 

example of how the people of two nations can overcome frontiers. 

In addition, its location where the borders of three countries meet 

makes the city a perfect starting point for short trips to the region 

of Upper Lusatia, to Wroclaw (Breslau) in Poland or the nearby Giant 

Mountains and Prague in the Czech Republic.

via regia – history and stories about life on the road 

"800 years of movement and mobility" along 

the historic trade route via regia is the title 

of the Third Saxon State Exhibition, which will 

be on show in Görlitz from 21 May to 31 October 

2011. 

VENUE 

The exhibition will be located in the Kaisertrutz, 

a massive round bastion from the 15th 

century which forms the gateway to the city. 

This imposing medieval building is situated 

on the via regia which for centuries was one of 

central Europe's most important trade routes.

EXHIBITION CONCEPT 

Capturing 800 years of movement and mobility 

along the via regia in one exhibition is a 

huge challenge for the organisers. In response 

they have taken their inspiration from the 

Kaisertrutz and divided the exhibition into 

5 thematic areas – Departure, Foundations, 

Market, People and Exchange, which are 

excitingly staged with unique exhibits and 

interactive media. Against this background, 

brief stories linking people, locations, art and 

culture will be interwoven as in the movies. 

DEPARTURE 

The interactive introduction to the via regia 

on the ground fl oor will enable visitors to 

explore the theme of the exhibition and give 

them an overall picture of the medieval trade 

route. 

FOUNDATION 

However, as such routes and the cities along 

them don't arise out of nothing, the basement 

of the building looks at their physical foundations. 

By means of archaeological relics it can 

be demonstrated that even before the via regia 

was mentioned for the fi rst time the route 

was already an important transport link between 

eastern and western Europe.

The market on the fi rst fl oor will be the core 

of the exhibition. Using Görlitz as an example 

the general question is asked about what 

goods were moved, together with where and 

how.

PEOPLE 

The second fl oor deals with the protagonists, 

presenting individual biographies of merchants 

from Erfurt, Leipzig and Wroclaw. Then 

as now people with the most widely differing 

origins and characters started out on journeys 

for a range of different reasons, carrying their 

values, ideas and traditions to other parts of 

Europe. 

EXCHANGE 

What was transported along the route in 

people´s minds, and what art was physically 

transported down the road? The upper fl oor 

shows how this was expressed in the visual 

arts, in literature and music (for more information 

see p. 11 / 12). 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT GUIDED CITY TOURS: 

+ We are happy to organise guided tours on the specifi c dates and 

at the times you require. 

+ Please note that unless indicated otherwise the guided tours 

do not include tours of interiors. These can, however, be 

or ganised on request. The entrance fees for these will be 

payable separately.

FURTHER EXHIBITIONS 

The city's museums will also be contributing 

to via regia with exhibitions of their own, 

adding to the themes of the exhibition. An 

integrated overall audio guide will accompany 

visitors through the exhibition in the Kaisertrutz 

and the individual exhibitions at the 

museums, as far as possible following the 

progress of the historical via regia through 

Görlitz, making the city, as a whole, part of 

the exhibition. The recordings covering trade, 

the lives of those involved and accompanying 

music will enable visitors to enter directly 

into the life along and on the road at various 

exhibition locations, so they can experience for 

themselves the authentic life of the via regia. 

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE 

Prospects for the future will also be developed 

along with this look back at the past, giving 

children and teenagers the opportunity to become 

actively involved with the history and 

signifi cance of their region and to think about 

the questions raised by the exhibition. What 

are my points of orientation? How do migration 

processes develop? What connects the 

history of the old via regia trade route with 

the Council of Europe's present-day cultural 

route of the same name? The exhibition uses 

the past to shed light on the present, looking 

at questions such as why people took to the 

road then and still do so today. 

The Third Saxon State Exhibition is being 

planned and implemented on behalf of the 

Free State of Saxony by the Dresden State Art 

Collections (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen 

Dresden), which are today among Europe's 

major museums and present world-ranking international 

exhibitions.

800 years of history along the via regia. The organisers of the tourist 

programme have designed a range of special offers to help you and 

your guests discover the many and varied treasures of Görlitz, Upper Lusatia 

and our neighbouring countries of Poland and the Czech Republic. 

Görlitz as a trading city 

The former cloth-making city of Görlitz owes a large part of its riches to a 

very special plant – woad, which was used in the Middle Ages to dye yarn 

and cloth. For many years Görlitz had a trade monopoly in woad. In this 

guided tour, which takes participants through the historic old town, we 

look at the properties of this plant and the way it was processed.

You can combine your visit to the Third Saxon State Exhibition with an

3. SAXON STATE EXHIBITION 2011 GUIDED TOURS OF THE CITY 

5-day programme: A team of six cities – 

the “Lusatian League” 

In 1346 Bautzen, Görlitz, Kamenz, Löbau and 

Zittau came together with the present Polish 

town of Lauban (Lubań), to form the Lusatian 

League, thus creating a strong and infl uential 

counterbalance to the landed aristocracy. The 

cooperation between the cities as a federation 

for the protection of the peace in the region 

survived until 1815. 

On your trip through the six cities you will 

experience stories from 1,000 years of Upper 

Lusatian history. The programme is available 

the whole year round, with overnight accommodation 

possible in Görlitz, Zittau or Bautzen. 

The programme can also be adapted to your own 

requirements in that the starting point can be 

freely selected. The day's programmes are interchangeable, 

depending on where the overnight

this Polish member of the League, visit to the 

Regional Museum, return trip to Görlitz and 

dinner at the “Destille” restaurant with a visit to 

the Jewish baths, which were fi rst mentioned 

in historical records in 1071 and are directly 

adjacent to the restaurant.

Walk through Löbau, followed by a trip to the 

Zittau Hills with Obercunnersdorf and Herrnhut. 

In the afternoon there will be a guided tour of 

Zittau and of the "Church of the Holy Cross" 

museum, which contains Zittau's famous Lenten 

Veil dating back to 1472. In the evening there 

will be "Lenten food" at the Klosterstübl tavern 

in Zittau. Among the specialities here guests 

are served with a "brewer monk's pork chop concealed 

in mashed potato" as a culinary highlight 

to round off their visit to the Zittau Lenten Veil, 

accompanied by the narration of (not entirely 

serious) stories on the theme of fasting.

Visit to Lessing's city of Kamenz, including a 

tour of the Lessing Museum, followed by a tour 

of the more than 1,000 year old city of Bautzen 

(Budysˇin), including a visit to the Sorbian 

museum with its treasure of information about 

the history, culture and way of life of the Sorbs.

sections of these twin cities were separated.

GÖRLITZ 

Experience the wonderful landscapes and sights round and about Görlitz. 

The city's location, where the borders of three countries meet, enables 

short excursions to Upper Lusatia as well as to Poland and the 

Dresden 

The capital of Saxony, the 800-year-old Dresden is one of 

the cultural capitals of Europe. Copions architectural monuments 

and museums as well as prestigious world-renowned 

cultural institutions, provide a treasure whose 

discovery promises highest pleasures and many surprises. 

But Dresden's lovely surroundings are worth a visit, too. 

Giant Mountains and Hirschberg Valley 

(PL) 

The Giant Mountains are the highest part of the Sudeten 

range and receive the greatest number of visitors. In parts 

it is a genuinely high mountain range with the famous 

Schneekoppe as its highest peak (1.602 m.). The most attractive 

part of the range was turned into a national park 

in 1959. In the Prussian era a castle and park landscape of 

indescribable beauty was developed around the mountain 

range - the Hirschberg Valley. 

Wroclaw (PL) 

Today the capital of Silesia at the foot of the Sudeten 

Mountains is one of Poland's most beautiful cities. Founded 

in Roman times, the city now stretches across the river 

Oder and its numerous tributaries and canals, with 12 

islands and more than 100 bridges. 

Especially worth seeing are the old town with Rynek and 

the town hall, the Som Island and Sand Island with the 

cathedral, the Aula Leopoldina at Wroclaw university and 

the Centennial Hall. 

Zittau – city of the Lenten Veils 

Saxony's most south-easterly city is over 750 years old. 

It lies on the borders of Silesia and Bohemia, was once a 

fl ourishing centre for trade and was famous for its riches. 

Its historic old town with architecture ranging from the 

Gothic to the Classicist styles has been preserved almost 

in its entirety. The Zittau Lenten Veils are unique in Germany.These 

precious works of textile art are on display in 

the Church of the Holy Cross Museum and the Franciscan 

Monastery Museum, and form a special attraction on the 

international via sacra tourist route. The large Lenten 

Veil (56 m 2 ) shows 90 biblical images, while the small one 

(15 m 2 ) shows the Crucifi xion. 

Muskauer Park 

The Muskau park offers an outstanding nature-oriented 

experience with its extensive meadows, majestic trees, 

rambling paths, picturesque lakes and rivers, unique 

bridges and buildings. This paradise can be explored on 

foot, by horse-drawn carriage, by bike or by boat. Everything 

that looks as though it was created by nature is in 

fact a man-made landscape – a work of landscaping art by 

Hermann, Prince of Pückler-Muskau. 

Cistercian nunnery St. Marienthal 

near Ostritz 

The “Klosterstift St. Marienthal” is the oldest nunnery of 

the Cistercian Order in Germany and has been continuously 

occupied ever since it was founded in 1234. The imposing 

baroque complex is made up of the abbey, Cross Chapel 

and Michaelis Chapel, a fountain with its Column of the 

Trinity, a former mill, a historic sawmill and a vineyard. We 

recommend a walk through the cloister's wood along the 

nature trail, the cycle path along the Neiße, the abbey's 

market and a visit to the “Klosterschenke“ inn. 

Prague (CZ) 

Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic, is with justifi 

cation referred to as the "Golden City" on the Moldau 

river. In the wealth of its historic monuments all eras of 

European architecture meet, refl ecting the city's history 

of over a thousand years. Slav, German and Jewish cultural 

infl uences merge in Prague and have, for a long time, 

now characterised the cultural life of this city on the Moldau. 

Special highlights include Vysehrad Castle, the Hradschin 

with Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge and Wenceslas 

Square. 

Bautzen and surroundings 

The silhouette of Bautzen rises impressively out of the hilly 

landscape of Upper Lusatia. A stroll through the restored 

old town with its architectural monuments, towers, 

medieval alleys, boulevards and inns enables visitors to 

experience 1000 years of the city's history. Especially 

worth seeing are the old “Wasserkunst” waterworks with 

the Ortenburg fortress and St. Petri cathedral, the only interdenominational 

church in eastern Germany. 

The city on Spree river is also a cultural and political center 

of the Sorbs, a small Slavic nation with their own language, 

traditions and folklore.

Zittau Mountains 

This low mountain range, Germany's 100th Nature 

Park containing a number of well-known health resorts, 

is a traditional holiday region in Upper Lusatia. 

Bizarre sandstone formations and rugged scenery 

are the special attractions of Germany's smallest 

mountain range. A ride on its narrow-gauge railway is 

a highlight for children and adults alike, with the route 

taking passengers from Zittau to the health resorts 

of Oybin or Jonsdorf. 

Herrnhut 

Herrnhut is where Unitas Fratrum, now a worldwide organisation 

also known as the Moravian Church, originated. The 

little town is characterised by its so-called Herrnhut Baroque 

and has a long tradition and history. Especially worth 

seeing are the church hall of the Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine 

(Moravian Church) and the cemetery, a listed site, as 

well as the demonstration workshop where the famous Moravian 

paper stars known as "Herrnhuter Sterne" are made. 

Northern Bohemia – 

Frydlant and Liberec (CZ) 

The region of Northern Bohemia is famous for its fascinating 

natural landscape. An excursion to the region around 

Frydlant in the northern area of the Czech Republic will 

provide an unusual journey of discovery, ranging from 

picturesque landscapes to cultural highlights in Liberec 

and Frydlant. As early as the 6th century a watch tower 

was built here on a cliff and later converted into a castle. 

It was the residence of Baron von Wallenstein, and Franz 

Kafka is also said to have been inspired by the castle. Today 

the fortress and castle of Frydlant are among the most 

frequently visited historical places in the Czech Republic. 

The excursion is rounded off by a guided tour of Liberec. 

via sacra (D, CZ, PL) 

On this cultural pilgrimage through the area where three 

countries meet you can discover the sacred treasures of 

Silesia, northern Bohemia and Upper Lusatia – his is the 

idea of the "via sacra". Along the 550 km route through 

this beautiful landscape 16 historic monuments tell their 

fascinating story. The route takes travellers through nearly 

one thousand years of central European culture and 

religious faith between Panschwitz-Kuckau, Mnichovo 

Hradišt / Münchengrätz (CZ) and Krzeszów / Grüssau (PL). 

Silesian Museum Görlitz in cooperation with

"JOURNEYS INTO UNCERTAINTY – MIGRATION AND POPULATION MOVEMENTS IN GÖRLITZ AND ZGORZELEC SINCE 1933". 

The Silesian Museum Görlitz presents a German- 

Polish exhibition which focuses on the lives of 

people from Görlitz and Zgorzelec – people who 

were forced out of their homeland, people who 

came here to start a new life or who left of their 

own accord because they saw no opportunity 

here for a worthwhile existence under conditions 

of freedom. The causes were dictatorship and persecution, 

war, fl ight, forced migration and expulsion, 

together with social and economic changes 

over the past 75 years. These processes have 

continued since German reunifi cation and the accession 

of Poland to the EU, with the result that 

Senckenberg Natural History Museum Görlitz 

"ROUTE OF MANY SPECIES" 

The signifi cance of the via regia for the spread 

of animals and plants from the Middle Ages to 

the present day is shown by the "Route of many 

species" exhibition, which focuses on the biology 

and cultural history of specifi c plants and 

animals in the region. The "Route of many species" 

leads us to old acquaintances and new 

residents of Lusatia, showing how they found 

their way here, what their economic importance 

was and the role they may have played as food. 

The exhibition is divided into the following thematic 

sections, which are looked at in order: 

there is hardly a single city which has experienced 

such a major fl uctuation in its population 

as Görlitz-Zgorzelec. 

The exhibition is a joint contribution to the Third 

Saxon State Exhibition by the Silesian Museum 

and the Lusatian Museum Zgorzelec. The two museums 

have taken a central theme for the exhibition 

and looked at aspects of this theme from 

a present-day point of view. The migration process 

in which Görlitz has always been involved 

throughout its history has never manifested itself 

as radically as in recent years in leading to a revitalisation 

and restructuring of the population.

The "Route of many species" exhibition is suitable 

for both children and adults and is an ideal

savannah, soil and live tropical and indigenous

3. SAXON STATE EXHIBITION 2011 THEATRE / CULTURAL FACILITIES MUSEEN 

Baroque House Neißstraße 30, 

Cultural History Museum 

„CULTURE AND ART OF THE 18TH CENTURY“ 

Görlitz' Cultural History Museum presents its 

collections in three listed buildings, the Kaisertrutz 

bastion, the Baroque House Neißstraße 

30 and the Reichenbach Tower. In 2011 the Kaisertrutz 

will be the central location of the Third 

Saxon State Exhibition. 

The Baroque House Neißstraße 30 lies in the 

heart of the old town, right on the via regia. It 

was built between 1726 and 1729 for the merchant 

Johann Christian Ameiß. With its large 

stores and offi ce facilities and stylish private 

residences it is regarded as the most important 

mercantile and residential building from the 

Baroque era in Görlitz. At the same time it has, 

for ages, been the intellectual centre of Upper 

Lusatia. The Upper Lusatian Scientifi c Society 

Holy Sepulchre and Nikolai Church 

Throughout the Middle Ages Christians longed 

to see for themselves the place where Christ was 

crucifi ed and rose from his grave. Wherever possible, 

replicas were created, and the Görlitz Holy 

Sepulchre complex provides an impressive demonstration 

of this late-medieval spirit of devotion. 

The Holy Sepulchre is part of a medieval 

place of pilgrimage and devotion erected in the 

open air and surrounded by a garden. The entire 

(Oberlausitzische Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften) 

– founded in 1779 – was based here from 

1804 to 1945. Since December 1951 the building 

has housed part of the city museum. It will 

be re-opened in 2011 after extensive restoration 

work and with a new permanent exhibition 

concept. The concept will be based on the building 

itself together with its history and historical 

collections. The elegant rooms on the fi rst 

fl oor of the front building will, as the former living 

area of the house's owner, introduce visitors 

to the world of the merchants and the aristocracy 

in eighteenth century Görlitz and Upper 

Lusatia, with staged interiors and selected exhibits. 

Glass exhibition cases will present the 

most important paintings and sculptures of the 

17th and 18th centuries, together with ceramics 

and porcelain, tin, copper, silver and glass. This 

fl oor also contains the Upper Lusatian library of 

sciences, whose historic rooms and outstanding 

book collections are on display. 

The second floor is devoted mainly to the 

achievements and collections of the Upper Lusatian 

Scientifi c Society. In addition to the collection 

of graphic arts, the collection of scientifi 

c objects formerly owned by founder Adolf 

complex, consisting of the dual chapel “To the 

Holy Cross”, the Salbhaus (Chrismation house) 

and the “Chapel of the Sepulchre”, is a replica of 

the main sections of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. 

For 2011 a special programme is being prepared 

to accompany the Third Saxon State Exhibition. 

Under the title "Across borders, through the 

ages – pilgrimages along the via regia, the many 

and varied aspects of the pilgrimage are explored 

and made accessible to visitors. For example, 

from May to November the nearby Nikolai- 

Church will host an exhibition which is especially 

dedicated to the theme of "Pilgrimages in the 

course of the centuries". The climax of activities 

in the autumn of 2011 is a pilgrimage beginning 

in Poland and leading to the Holy Sepulchre in

Along the via regia there are three churches 

within walking distance, in the Protestant inner 

city community – coming from the direction 

of the Altstadtbrücke there is the church of St. 

Peter and Paul, known as the "Peterskirche" 

on a cliff over the Neiße river, with below it 

the lower church of St. Georg, referred to as 

the "Crypt". In the direction of Bautzen the 

via regia led past the former Franciscan abbey, 

today's Church of the Holy Trinity, which is located 

on the Upper Market Square. Travellers 

who left the via regia here in order to take the 

road to Zittau / Prague came upon the former 

hospital Church of Our Lady at the gates of the 

medieval city. All three churches originated in 

the heyday of Gothic architecture.

GÖRLITZ THEATRE 

Görlitz’ “Little Semperoper” was opened in 

1851. It acquired both its fame and its nickname 

from its glittering ambience, which comes close 

to equalling that of the Semperoper in Dresden. 

The ceiling is elaborately decorated with artistic 

ornaments, painted heads and the fi gures of 

the muses, while the crystal chandeliers 

refl ect the light of the auditorium. 

The musical theatre produces operas, operettas, 

musicals and dance performances for the 

Lower Silesian / Upper Lusatian cultural area, 

in addition to concerts by the Neue Lausitzer 

Philharmonie (New Lusatian Philharmonic 

Orchestra). Guest performances and plays are 

also staged in Görlitz by the cooperative

GÖRLITZ NATURE CONSERVATION ZOO 

The Görlitz nature conservation zoo is a very special 

zoo. In this "natural shop window" about 

500 animals are presented in enclosures which 

are designed with imagination and loving care. 

Special attractions are the Tibetan Village, the 

petting zoo, the fi sh otter enclosure with its 

"Adventure bridge", an enclosure for red pandas 

with a Chinese pavilion, an open-air enclosure 

for rhesus monkeys with a feeding station and a 

meadow with lots of white storks. The permanent 

stork exhibition ("Klapperstorch mein Guter") 

is unique in Germany. Although this zoo is only 

5 hectares in size, a number of awards and the 

membership of the World Zoo Organisation make 

it one of the best in Germany.

autobusem: 1) Niemcy: jadąc z zachodnich Niemiec najlepiej wybrać autostradę A4 (Erfurt, Drezno), 

która jako trasa europejska E 40 prowadzi przez granicę aż do Wrocławia. Jadąc z północy najszybciej 

dotrą Państwo do Görlitz m.in. autostradą A 15 (zjazd Roggosen lub Forst), a następnie drogą B 115. Drogi 

B 6 i B 99 prowadzą bezpośrednio przez Europa-Miasto. 

2) Polska: jadąc ze wschodu, dojazd od Wrocławia autostradą A4 lub drogą 4 (Bolesławiec) i drogą 30 

(Lubań). Jadąc od strony północnej dojadą Państwo do nas drogą 35, od strony południowej drogą 325. 

Ważna informacja: Z powodu robót w obszarze Grüner Grabe/Demianiplatz nastąpiły zmiany w przebiegu
