When school bus driverPeter Denroche was about 12 yearsold his mother invited teacherAudrey Mills to a tea party at theDenroche homestead on GossipIsland. Peter was commanded tobring Miss Mills home in thefamily power boat.STRONG WIND, CURRENTA strong northwest wind wasblowing down Gossip Channel, and when they arrived at thelanding on Gossip the current wasso strong that Peter becamespread-eagled, with one handholding the boat and the other onthe pike pole on the dock. With only a split second for adecision Peter made the wrongone! Instead of the pike pole he letgo of the boat, landing in the saltchuck while the boat, with motorstill running and a terrified teacheron board, took off down thechannel.Dampened but- not defeatedPeter ran along the rocks to the tipof Gossip Point, dove in andmanaged to reach the boat beforeit made off across Active Pass.Clambering aboard he managed tobring the boat once more to theGossip Landing stage and this timesuccessfully completed his mission— to bring the teacher home fortea.Mabel CothernMabel Cothern's bright eyes andenergy-charged personality willPhillipSwiftBritish Columbia Land SurveyorRR1 Fulford Harbourlong be remembered in the PageDrive area of Galiano. Besidescaring for an invalid husband andkeeping an immaculate house andgarden, she found time to do manygood turns to fellow islanders.During these last 12 months, shebore the twin burdens of the loss ofher husband and the pain of aterminal illness with great courage. After many months in hospital inDuncan she gained her finalrelease, perhaps appropriately, onThanksgiving Day.Galiano Island PlayersSunday sees the firstperformance of a most unusualproduction, not only for the GulfIslands but for all of Canada.Students of English literaturerecognize the name W.B. Yeats asa poet, but it is not generallyknown that the Irishman spent 20years of his life writing anddirecting plays for the famousAbbey Theatre in Dublin.During this considerable periodof time he studied differenttechniques and styles ofplaywriting and wrote at least 20plays. The one to be presented atGaliano and later at U BC is one ofa cycle of five which have engagedthe interest of Heather Martinduring her in-depth graduateresearch on Yeats over many years. Many islanders have given theirhelp to Heather to stage thisproduction. Montague Harbour'snoted nonagenarian, StanleyJackson, has allowed rehearsals totake place in his spacious diningroom. Ted Prior volunteered tobuild the stage sets. RonaldoNorden designed and printed whatwe think may become collectoritemprograms with Runiclettering reminiscent of the Bookof Kels.Brad Prevedoros contributedvaluable ideas on the choice ofbackground music. Keith Holmesdesigned and made the maskswhich all the actors wear. ChristaWeiss created and sewed thecostumes, and together withHeather designed and stitched thestage curtains appliqued with theirown original logo.ALL OF GALIANOLast, but certainly not least, theplayers themselves, all Galianoresidents — Heather Martin,Akasha Forest, JanicePrevedoros, Bob Gilson, JoeFleming, Maxine Gadd, DebbieHolmes and Martha Miller.Yeats intended The OnlyJealousy of Enter for a smallintimate audience so only a limitednumber of tickets are available.Islanders should hurry to obtaintheir advance tickets by phoningHeather at 5413 or Christa at 2165for either Sunday at 7 pm orFriday, Oct. 30 at 8 pm, bothperformances in the SouthCommunity Hall.Galiano BrowniesBrownies are now in officialresidence on Galiano. Wednesday. October 21. 1981C>I'I F ISLANDSDRIKTWOODPage Twenty-1 hreeHiring of aides is questionedNow only $229,000.Despite the explanation thatteacher aides fill a versatile role inclassroom needs, John Zacharias,Pender Island trustee and JimRipley. Galiano trustee, questionwhy so many are hired.Aides help teachers preparelessons and perform some ol themenial work involved in teachingbut do not have charge of a class. The Gulf Islands School Districtemploys several aides to helpvarious classes."We're five and diming thissituation," said Ripley of a staffrequest to hire more aides."Why don't we know at budgettime how many teachers and aideswe need?" he asked.Zacharias questions why thedistrict hires so many aides whenanother teacher may do the job.His concern went beyond thehiring of aides when he askedabout part-time teachers as well.Bob Huestis. superintendent forthe district, explained thatflexibility can be maintained withthe hiring of six aides who could domore tasks than an additionalteacher.Aides are a recognized need ineducation and arc in use on aprovince-wide basis, said Huestis. He also pointed out that the GulfIslands education system utilizes anumber of non-paid and nonprofessionalpersons in the class.Volunteer workers help withlarge classes or are used in classeswhere a need is perceived. October 21. 1981Taimi HindmarchShe's retiring after 20 yearsof teaching at Saturna SchoolBY BILL WKBSTERThe lady drives the roads ofSaturna and the people she passeswave a friendly greeting. Not an unusual sight in the GullIslands but in this case thea fleet ion runs deep: TaimiHindmarch probably taught thewaver.Hindmarch is retiring at the endof this school yearalterleachingatthe Saturna school for 20 years. She and husband Bob came toSaturna in 1962 from l.adysmith."We were hesitant aboutbecoming islanders," she said. "Ifyou have u dream and it doesn'twork out..."Her leaching career has spannedthe time since the middle 3()'s andhas been centred on VancouverIsland. Such places as ChristinaLake, l.adysmith and Saturnahave been classrooms for her withtime off to raise a family.NOT MUCH OF A SHOCKThe change from a task ofteaching special education to 13children at l.adysmith to the 16pupils at Saturna in 1962 was nottoo much of a teaching shock. When she arrived, GlennWoodley, current Fernwoodprincipal, was the head man there. She taught all grades from one to. seven until Michael Hayes arrivedin 1973.At l.adysmith, Hindmarch hadtaught a class of 40 or morestudents. She sees a change ineducation with learning assistantsand teacher's aides working classestoday."The teacher today can do amore professional job," she said,"because she's not hurried."The friendly greetings fromVULadienTaimi Hindmarchpassers-by proves another pointshe has to make about herteaching. The teacher mustestablish a rapport with children tobe successful. Hard work isrequired to reach children, shesaid.NOT ALWAYS EASY"It's not always easy," she said,"creating that rapport withchildren."She has enjoyed the work atSaturna. teaching multi-gradeclasses. The advantage for theteacher in such situations lies inbeing able to really know andunderstand the children."Happy children will learn," isanother of Hindmarch's wisdoms. The Hindmarch home sits on abluff with a spectacular view oftheGulf Islands but such was notalways the case. When they cameto Saturna, there was no hydro onthe island and each house neededits own power plant.Changes to island life andteaching methods have been metwith charm and good humour bythis descendant of Finland. "1enjoy the human contact."But teaching isn't the hardesttask she has tackled. Raising threedaughters ranks as the toughest."The mother of pre-schoolershas the hardest but most importantjob," she said. All the years and all the pupilsbecome, truly, part of the past forHindmarch next June. When shebegan to teach on Saturna in 1962,the classroom staff of the GulfIslands schools numbered 19teachers."I've seen it grow," she said.MODERNIZEwithPROPANE537-2233 „Fine Sounds..Pure Foods-High Vibrations.Friday, Saturday, Sundaynights - doors open 8 pmSunday afternoons 12-5Valcourt Centre, back section 537-5633P.O. A dozen or so interestedpeople, who managed to find outabout the meeting, also came. Thetone was far less antagonistic thanthe earlier Islands Trust meeting.About 20 people discussed, essentially, the bylaws that hadbeen questioned at the previousmeeting. Some ofthe bylaws underdiscussion concerned accessorybuildings — how much squarefootage for a given lot size, numberof people working in a homeoccupation, and farming in forestzones.Ken Gillespie's desire for areligous retreat received muchdeliberation from the entire groupas none of the zonings seems toapply. The bylaw will be a betterbylaw for this type of interaction inwhich elected representatives andinterested citizens put their brainsand common and private intereststogether before these questionsbecome entrenched as law.It is important to not get boggeddown in the minutiae and to keepin mind the large effects thatzoning has on the housing and lifestyles of the people who make up(he community.CHARTERS:• Cruises•For^eop/e ^omgTiaces...FlightsTRAVELWORLDRobitussin• Bus ToursCall Connie or Susan atSalt SpringInsurance (1972) Ltd.537-5527Effective relief of dry, hacking coughand congesting cough.Available in three different formulas —PE and DM to help you through unpleasantRobitussinfor Childrenand AdultsRobitussinM»IU1MI,11*by A.H. Page-Thirty GULF ISLANDS DRIFTWOOD Wednesday, October 21, 1981It's nine wins and no lossesBY HENRY HETEROSEXUALCorrectionSlug Hockey Productionsincorporated (1979) Limited wouldlike to make an apology forinconveniences suffered tocorporate entities as a result of anerror in the legal notice publishedlast week in this newspaper. The figure $100,000 (onehundred thousand dollars)indicated as deposit for intent to bidfor ownership should have read SI(one dollar). In lieu of cash. Slug HockeyProductions will accept I (one) caseof empty beer bottles or 10 (ten)large-size pop bottles. We sincerely regret anydifficulties occurring as a result ofthis oversight. For opponents it was close butno cigar this past weekend as theSlugs struggled briefly then, rolledon to two more wins, boosting theseason's record to nine without aloss 1 :The question that still remainsunanswered is whether the Slugsare really that good, or whether thebums Bcrgstrome chooses asopponents are just as rotten as theyappear.Understandably, skeptics are alittle taken aback by the fact thatthe Slugs have scored 110 goals inthis span, averaging over 12 agame; while Farm Boy Hughes, probably the only tractor driveruniversitystudent to arrive athockey games in a chauffeurdrivenBMW, has stoned themcold at the other end, giving up amere 25 goals for a 2.77 goalsagainst average.THEY'RE THROWING UPMore than one hockey writerhas thrown up (his hands) trying tofigure out what's going on. WowieHowie Squeeker himself was partof this weekend's overflow crowd, but refused all comment for themoment.Anyway Saturday afternoon theSlugs tangled with the CapitalRegional District's powerhousecardiac arrest unit, theOctogenarians, and came awayeasy winners.Led by sometime newcomerGary who the hell is he (must beUkrainian) and Mad Dog Gaineswith three each, the Slugs wonhardily 11-2.A FIRSTThe game, a scrambly affair, featured a hockey first, as Mary-Jane Hardie, co-founder of the 1-Hate-Hockey Club, actually satthrough the whole thing withoutonce glancing at her Harlequinnovel.Sunday, with a smaller thanusual crowd looking on, the Slugsbattled and brawled their way to atough 5-2 win over the NanaimoNeanderthals. The Neanderthals, again led by their wooly-toothedgorilla, played hard and rough. No less than four different Slugstook exception to Igor's gentle loveSlug owner's handbook — Part IVtaps, with Pat Gaines administeringthe coup de grace by escortingthe young gentleman tenderly offthe ice by the ear. Pat's hockeystick was successfully removedfrom the young man's mouthmoments later by a localveterinarian.END-TO-END BATTLEBetween the fisticuffs, the gamefeatured an end-to-end battle withFarm Boy coming up big time andtime again. The Slugs jumped infront early on a picture-perfect tipinby a diving Al Hardie and thenheld on despite constant pressurefrom the Neanderthal forwards.Topping, Pat and Dan Akermanand Mad Dog, playing his lastgame for a while, rounded out thescoring.Fruit Sinclair also had a threepointday, but unfortunately it wasoff the ice as it is apparently illegalto go 85 mph in a Model-T van onVancouver Island. So now on to next week, whenthe Slugs will be out to up theirrecord to 11-0 with wins overHappy Honda (what!?) and theFlyers from Mill Bay.And incidentally, the word tothat smart-alec young whippersnapperon Galiano Island whoappears to get his perverse jollieseating slugs marinated with beer(oh sacrilege!).Don't underestimate the powerof the slug — you risk bodily harmat the hands of hordes of vengefulslug-lovers — not to mentionserious indigestion. Many a racing neophytehas been victimized byunscrupulous slugdealers orat lowcost slug auctions. Though apremium price may be exacted, one can be certain of quality andlineage. If, however, you know thequalities required of the top-notchrace slug, you can sometimespurchase an excellent prospect atone of the lesser known breedingfarms.KNOW YOUR STOCKWe caution you, though, thatyou must know your stock; thistype of buying can be very risky. After thoughtful and carefulevaluation, which should haveincluded reading about, viewingand being with the various breeds,it is now time to decide which oneis right for you.Tips for Selecting a QualityRace Slug:• Biggest is not always best orfastest;• The highest price does notnecessarily mean the highestquality;• The high-spirited, healthy slughas a glossy sheen, instantlyrecognizable;• Look for intelligence, evidenced by bright eyes and quickcuriosity;• Speed checks you might try toinclude:Hold up your favourite plantand time the slug you areconsidering as it dashes by.Although denounced by some ascruel and possibly even dangerous, many slug fanciers creep up behindthe prospective animal and shout,"Quack, Quack" or "SodiumChloride."We do not recommend this fortwo reasons: there is always theoutside possibility of a stampedeendangering both you and theanimal, and many slugs becomevery insecure and hard to managewhen threatened in this manner.Next week, training the houseslug.WILSON, HAYES, LLOYD & DEBECKDuncan and GangesSecond Floor, Ganges Centre BuildingP.O.
