The mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>Urban</strong> <strong>Gateways</strong> is toignite the full creative potential <strong>of</strong> allyoung people. We accomplish thatmission by promoting and fosteringlearning in and through the arts withinthe Chicago metropolitan area.When Jesse Woods founded <strong>Urban</strong> <strong>Gateways</strong>in 1961, the organization focused on providingChicago-area children with free tickets to world-classrecitals, concerts, operas and theater productions.Since then <strong>Urban</strong> <strong>Gateways</strong> has grown into one <strong>of</strong>the largest and most comprehensive arts educationorganizations in the country. 1 SELECT DEPTH OF PROGRAMMING<strong>Urban</strong> <strong>Gateways</strong> programming ranges from one-time exposure opportunities,such as a touring or matinee performance, to Arts-Wired Schools thatincorporate a wide array <strong>of</strong> arts <strong>of</strong>ferings during both the in-school and out<strong>of</strong>-schoolhours. While the overall impact on a school is heightened when<strong>Urban</strong> <strong>Gateways</strong> programs are delivered concurrently, many schools start byinitially selecting one or two program <strong>of</strong>ferings at a time. Our staff will workwith you to determine what level <strong>of</strong> programming best suits your school ororganization.2 Customize<strong>Urban</strong> <strong>Gateways</strong> prides itself on the ability to assess and meet the specificneeds <strong>of</strong> each classroom, school and community in which we work. Theprocess began with each classroomteacher selecting the artist whosediscipline best-suited their studentsand curricula. Then the artist-teacherteams identified a major idea toexplore and discussed how the artistcould employ his/her discipline todig deeper and find meaningfulconnections between that idea andthe world around them.The artists met with their classesonce a week for 15 weeks. under $10,000Duration: 7 weeksType: In-schoolUG Artists: 2Classrooms: 2Grades: 9-12under $2,500Duration: 4 weeksType: After-schoolUG Artists: 1Students: 30Grades: 8-10Program ComponentsTwo Artists-in-ResidenceMatinee Subscription(4 performances)Students at this alternative highschool needed music credits tograduate, but the school had nomusic teacher and no budgetto hire one. <strong>Urban</strong> <strong>Gateways</strong>sent two teaching artists withmusic disciplines into the school,three times a week for 7 weeks.Collaborating with the administrationand teachers, the artists created amusic curriculum and taught twoclasses <strong>of</strong> 30 students each.In addition to the arts experiencesin the classroom, the school alsoinvested in a Matinee SubscriptionSeries, allowing the students toexperience pr<strong>of</strong>essional dance,music and theatre inside some <strong>of</strong>Chicago’s most notable venues.Outcome: The teaching artistsnot only helped the studentsearn the credits they needed tograduate, but they also successfullyengaged students, most <strong>of</strong> whomare non-traditional learners. Theadditional investment in the <strong>Urban</strong><strong>Gateways</strong> Matinee SubscriptionSeries connected the class to thepr<strong>of</strong>essional performances, enablingthe students to explore musicacademically, culturally andin practice.Program ComponentsOne Artist-in-ResidenceA community center wanted <strong>Urban</strong><strong>Gateways</strong> to create a 4-week-long,after-school program specifically fortheir female students in grades 8-10.In an effort to create programmingthat would resonate with these youngwomen, the <strong>Urban</strong> <strong>Gateways</strong> teachingartist visited the center, spoke tostudents and collaborated with staff.Through that process, the artistdeveloped a program focused onhip-hop. The teaching artist met with30 girls twice a week for two hours.Together they explored the traditions<strong>of</strong> hip-hop, examined the impact<strong>of</strong> gender representation in hiphop,and created a hip-hop danceperformance.Outcome: This short-term residencyprovided a safe and enriching afterschoolenvironment, stimulatedcreative and culturally-awarethinking, and taught students howto express themselves both throughdiscussion and dance.www.urbangateways.org7

Cultural Education ProgramThe Cultural Education Program (CEP) is a competitive matchinggrant partnership between <strong>Urban</strong> <strong>Gateways</strong> and selected schools designedto strengthen the link between a school’s art specialist and classroomteachers. The program’s ultimate goal is to establish a sustainable learningenvironment in which the arts play an integral role. To that end, CEP aimsto give educators the tools to make connections between the fine andperforming arts, social sciences and language arts.Through CEP, students and teachers receive training in one <strong>of</strong> four specificarts disciplines each year: dance, music, theatre and visual arts.
