Policy 9005Page 1 of 2STAFF CONDUCTThe Board of Trustees subscribes to the concept of professional codes of ethics for teachers and othercertified staff members. The Board of Trustees expects professionals to adhere to and promote the conceptsof such codes. In serving the community, patrons, and students of <strong>Nampa</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> No. 131, theBoard of Trustees expects its professional certified staff to conduct themselves in a manner that willexemplify adult models promoting school pride, honor, patriotism, respect for others’ property, anddedication to excellence in education.All school personnel are charged with the individual responsibility of establishing and maintaining an open,well-disciplined, positive atmosphere within the schools. Trust and pride in the educational system of<strong>Nampa</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>District</strong> No. 131 are directly related to how students, parents, and community patronsactually experience the day-to-day happenings of the schools. Each and every interaction either builds orbreaks down that trust.<strong>Staff</strong>/Student Relations:<strong>Staff</strong> members are significant adults in the lives of impressionable young people. Because students learnand absorb the behavior they see modeled, staff shall be expected to conduct themselves in a mature,balanced, and self-disciplined manner (especially when disciplining students).<strong>Staff</strong> members shall treat each student as an individual deserving courtesy and respect. Insults, sarcasm,humiliation, threats of/or use of physical coercion or force to require compliance with a staff member’srequirements or expectations shall all be considered inappropriate and, in fact, harmful interaction withstudents. (Properly conducted physical restraint may be used in an exceptional incident where injury toperson or destruction of property is likely to result from student misconduct.)<strong>Staff</strong> members shall consider conversation regarding students part of their professional commitment.Content, tone, and attitudes expressed should reflect that commitment, as should a respect forconfidentiality issues.<strong>Staff</strong>/Community Relations:<strong>Staff</strong> members shall be expected to view themselves as part of a partnership, working together with parentsand the community in educating our youth. They shall be expected to treat these partners with courtesy andrespect.<strong>Staff</strong> members shall share information with parents on student progress/concerns in a professional, timelymanner. They shall listen actively and open-mindedly to concerns expressed by patrons.


Policy 9005Page 2 of 2<strong>Staff</strong> members shall conduct themselves in a mature, well-balanced, and self-disciplined manner incommunications with patrons who may be upset, angry, or hostile. Intimidations, condescension, insults, orsarcasm toward patrons shall be considered unacceptable staff responses.Students, parents, patrons, or colleagues who have experienced or observed a disregard for these staffconduct expectations should try to discuss the incident with the individual involved first. However, if thisdoes not lead to an acceptable resolution, the specifics of the incident should be reported to the buildingadministrator as soon as possible. If concerns remain unresolved at this level, the Superintendent should becontacted. <strong>Staff</strong> evaluations shall clearly reflect such negative instances, and disciplinary action may result.<strong>Staff</strong>/<strong>Staff</strong> Relations:<strong>Staff</strong> members shall treat other staff members as individuals deserving courtesy and respect. Insults,sarcasm, humiliation, threats of/or use of physical coercion or force to require compliance with a staffmember’s requirements or expectations shall all be considered inappropriate and, in fact, harmfulinteraction with another staff member.ADOPTED: November 11, 1997AMENDED: August 20, 1998
