STUDY TRIPLots <strong>of</strong> adventures <strong>in</strong> 7 days:By Deniss KiselovsThere are four brave students amongus who dared to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Swedish languageexchange program <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>land,two <strong>of</strong> whom knew virtually no Swedish, where as <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r two (who spokewell) just wanted to see F<strong>in</strong>land. Thesefour characters pledged to stay anonymous,so, for convenience only, let’s justcall <strong>the</strong>m Krist<strong>in</strong>a, Jevgenijs, Deniss andVytautas. The trip was organized so that <strong>the</strong>leavers would miss as less <strong>of</strong> school aspossible, so <strong>the</strong>y ended up miss<strong>in</strong>g onlyone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major models <strong>in</strong> Macro, all<strong>the</strong> HRM lectures, Peak Time, a greatparty and at least one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> students’birthdays. This, <strong>of</strong> course, <strong>the</strong>y did notknow until <strong>the</strong>y came back from <strong>the</strong> land<strong>of</strong> F<strong>in</strong>nish chocolate, bread andMcDonalds-everywhere.For <strong>the</strong> male part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> group, <strong>the</strong>journey began <strong>in</strong> Latvia. They met atseven o’clock <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> station, loaded with a huge travel<strong>in</strong>g bagper capita and passports, two <strong>of</strong> whichhad a green visa say<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> alienswere allowed to enter F<strong>in</strong>land. Vytautaswas brave enough not to buy <strong>the</strong> ticketsfor <strong>the</strong> bus at all, hop<strong>in</strong>g that hewould be able to get some on it. In case<strong>the</strong>re were no tickets, his back up planconsisted <strong>of</strong>… Na-a-gh, he did not havea back up plan; he must have prayedhard <strong>the</strong> night before. The five hour bus trip was not fun –<strong>the</strong> team was ei<strong>the</strong>r read<strong>in</strong>g Macro orHRM. By <strong>the</strong> first stop, Deniss almostfell out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bus – Vytautas must havetried to kill him by choos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> seats<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bus: to Deniss, <strong>the</strong> kilometercounter seemed like measur<strong>in</strong>ghis sickness level ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> distance. It was not that bad though, s<strong>in</strong>ce(luckily) Deniss had chosen not to havebreakfast <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g.The bus dropped <strong>the</strong> crew <strong>of</strong>f at <strong>the</strong>ferry term<strong>in</strong>al. Only here did <strong>the</strong> teamrealize that <strong>the</strong>re is more than one ferryterm<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong> Tall<strong>in</strong>n and until <strong>the</strong>y sawKrist<strong>in</strong>a (with her girl friend) float<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> term<strong>in</strong>al gates, none was sure<strong>the</strong>y arrived at <strong>the</strong> right site. As <strong>the</strong>yall waited for <strong>the</strong> fare, Deniss’ lack <strong>of</strong>breakfast persuaded everyone to seeksome food <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> adjacent Hesburger. The <strong>Insider</strong> #3 (64), May 2004; Page 6A Break Just <strong>in</strong> TimeThere <strong>the</strong>y saw <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> hunger:Deniss must have added some 10% toEstonia’s GDP level. It took <strong>the</strong> fellowship <strong>of</strong> SSER threehours to get to Hels<strong>in</strong>ki by <strong>the</strong> ferry.Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> journey Krist<strong>in</strong>a was completelyenchanted by <strong>the</strong> sound <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>cas<strong>in</strong>o’s gam<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es. A click here,a click <strong>the</strong>re – and stuff’s sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g everywhere! She won some EUR 8 <strong>the</strong> firstround and happily returned to her seatto <strong>the</strong> group. Five m<strong>in</strong>utes later she decidedthat her luck surplus has yet notbeen depleted, so she took one euro out<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pile and say<strong>in</strong>g: “Just gonna tryone more time!” left <strong>the</strong> guys to count<strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> waves on <strong>the</strong> water. Shewas back <strong>in</strong> 30 seconds, disappo<strong>in</strong>tedat <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e. Here, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>evitable“gambl<strong>in</strong>g multiplier’s” cha<strong>in</strong> effecttook place…Jevgenijs, who wanted to cheer herup, took out some money and <strong>the</strong>y bothleft to play. Deniss was too lazy to careand Vytautas was joyfully play<strong>in</strong>gsome childish rac<strong>in</strong>g game on one <strong>of</strong> hisphones. Two m<strong>in</strong>utes later Jevgenijspuffed back <strong>in</strong>to his seat, mumbl<strong>in</strong>gsometh<strong>in</strong>g like: “Never aga<strong>in</strong>!”, whileKrist<strong>in</strong>a gracefully sat back <strong>in</strong>to herchair and concentrated on <strong>the</strong> pile <strong>of</strong>co<strong>in</strong>s left, philosophiz<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> topic<strong>of</strong> gambl<strong>in</strong>g:“You know,” she said, “that’s <strong>the</strong> lasttime I will play this game. I mean, it isso unethical – tak<strong>in</strong>g money away fromhard work<strong>in</strong>g people. What is worse, itsucks people <strong>in</strong> worse than alcoholand…”“Alcohol?” Deniss woke up from hisafter-late-breakfast sleep. “Where is alcohol?”“Go back to sleep, malish,” hushedJevgenijs at him, still disappo<strong>in</strong>ted. “Itseems that <strong>the</strong>se mach<strong>in</strong>es are programmedto let you w<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first fewrounds and only <strong>the</strong>n strip you clear <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> your money.”“That’s most probably what happens,”said Krist<strong>in</strong>a, still gaz<strong>in</strong>g downon <strong>the</strong> few co<strong>in</strong>s sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> table.“And that is why I will not go and playanymore…”Next th<strong>in</strong>g you know, she grabbed onemore co<strong>in</strong> and left play<strong>in</strong>g. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n,she returned all <strong>the</strong> time misplaced anduncomfortable, still rem<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>males explicitly <strong>of</strong> her disgust to <strong>the</strong>game, but after five m<strong>in</strong>utes she wasback at it aga<strong>in</strong>. The rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> groupalso gambled, but not <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cas<strong>in</strong>o; <strong>the</strong>ydid it right <strong>the</strong>re, at <strong>the</strong> table. Theygambled on how much time will elapsebetween Krist<strong>in</strong>a com<strong>in</strong>g back to <strong>the</strong>table and her next rendez-vous with <strong>the</strong>co<strong>in</strong> consum<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e.“She will be a one expensive wife tosomeone someday,” Deniss joked, whilst<strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> males laughed hystericallyat Krist<strong>in</strong>a’s <strong>in</strong>ability to stopthrow<strong>in</strong>g her money away. And so <strong>the</strong>y came to Hels<strong>in</strong>ki. Thetroops were met by <strong>the</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>ator <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> project – a lovely lady who spokeboth Swedish and English and whok<strong>in</strong>dly helped <strong>the</strong> travelers to <strong>the</strong> hostel. The hostel, despite its name, lookedmore like a three star Latvian hotel and<strong>the</strong> hospitality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> receptionist couldonly be put up aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> friendl<strong>in</strong>ess<strong>of</strong> a five star hotel manager to a VIP. Inshort, <strong>the</strong> wonderers were impressed.Room key-cards were given to everymember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> team. For <strong>the</strong> first tenm<strong>in</strong>utes no one could work out wholived where, especially with Krist<strong>in</strong>atry<strong>in</strong>g to take charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> distributionprocess. First she exclaimed that <strong>the</strong>numbers said she had to live withJevgenijs (though she h<strong>in</strong>ted she wouldra<strong>the</strong>r live with Vytautas); <strong>the</strong>n sheturned <strong>the</strong> card upside down and itlooked as if she had to live with Deniss, which made her quickly accept chang<strong>in</strong>grooms so that she lived with bothVytautas and Jevgenijs, whilst Denissgets a room all for himself. The resolutionwas that she was assigned to twoPolish girls (who were on <strong>the</strong> same exchangeprogram) and <strong>the</strong> guys had tolive toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> a separate room.As <strong>the</strong> boys unpacked <strong>the</strong>ir toothbrushes, many clean socks and evenmore books, <strong>the</strong>y quickly exchangedideas on <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g program. Theweights <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> voters were equally distributed;however, alcohol seemed toga<strong>in</strong> most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> votes. Surely, <strong>the</strong> maleswould not miss a chance to try out someforeign beer! But prior to <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>gfun……<strong>the</strong> four had to attend <strong>the</strong> lecturesfor <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day. Though veryvalue add<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> lectures proved per-
fect humiliators to Deniss. His Swedishseemed like a mix <strong>of</strong> English, Germanand Russian, which made him soundlike a shy boy try<strong>in</strong>g to pay <strong>the</strong> girl <strong>of</strong>his life a compliment whilst swallow<strong>in</strong>gall most all <strong>the</strong> words and stopp<strong>in</strong>gto f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> next appropriate adjectiveevery five seconds. He was good withnumbers though: he scored top at writ<strong>in</strong>gdown complex numbers; that’sprobably <strong>the</strong> only th<strong>in</strong>g he could doright…After <strong>the</strong> lectures <strong>the</strong> team went onto explore <strong>the</strong> city. The team consisted, though, only <strong>of</strong> Deniss, Jevgenijs andVytautas, as Krist<strong>in</strong>a was desperatelytry<strong>in</strong>g to make new friends among <strong>the</strong>male part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Polish gang. Somehow,<strong>the</strong> Baltic people did not gag for <strong>the</strong>privilege, and <strong>the</strong> Polish fellows seemednot to bo<strong>the</strong>r ei<strong>the</strong>r (although towards<strong>the</strong> end we did have one grand fiesta toge<strong>the</strong>r).So, with females out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way,<strong>the</strong> trio took its time to go sightsee<strong>in</strong>g…<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> nearby supermarket. There<strong>the</strong>y got <strong>the</strong>mselves some frozen chickenfor supper, a random sample <strong>of</strong> weaknative öl and retreated towards <strong>the</strong>hostel.The cook<strong>in</strong>g process was a completedisaster. Although <strong>the</strong> guys were hungryenough not to notice <strong>the</strong> bits <strong>of</strong> ice<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> half-cooked food, <strong>the</strong> smell couldhave brought down an elephant.Krist<strong>in</strong>a was eat<strong>in</strong>g a yogurt (one pereven<strong>in</strong>g), which she thought wouldhelp her reta<strong>in</strong> control over unnecessarycalories. Whom was she try<strong>in</strong>g t<strong>of</strong>ool? She was just sav<strong>in</strong>g money togamble her way back to Riga. The rest<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong>guys spent study<strong>in</strong>gSwedish,watch<strong>in</strong>g mov-iesonJevgenijs’laptop, go<strong>in</strong>gto <strong>the</strong> sauna,m a k i n gfriends with<strong>the</strong> Polish femalecrew, etc;Krist<strong>in</strong>a was nowhereto be seen(as was <strong>the</strong> Polish malecrew); she afterwards toldstories <strong>of</strong> watch<strong>in</strong>g beautifulsunrises and dawns on <strong>the</strong> beaches<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> company <strong>of</strong> gorgeous Polishmales. Ehhh, seems like Latvians andLithuanians are out <strong>of</strong> fashion aga<strong>in</strong>…DennissKrist<strong>in</strong>aJevgenisSTUDY TRIPOne even<strong>in</strong>g Deniss and Jevgenijs decidedto go to <strong>the</strong> c<strong>in</strong>ema to once aga<strong>in</strong>experience Tarant<strong>in</strong>o’s genu<strong>in</strong>e love forsamurai swords. The one difference that<strong>the</strong>y found (except for <strong>the</strong> huge size <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> c<strong>in</strong>ema) was that all <strong>the</strong> seats weretaken for most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> films – film-show<strong>in</strong>gseemed like a pr<strong>of</strong>itable bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong>F<strong>in</strong>landOn Thursday (two days prior to leav<strong>in</strong>g),<strong>the</strong>re was a trip to Borgo, an oldcity just outside <strong>of</strong> Hels<strong>in</strong>ki. Imag<strong>in</strong>ethree guys runn<strong>in</strong>g like <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d, with<strong>the</strong>ir tongues out, at 20 degrees Celsiusoutside, sweat<strong>in</strong>g, through <strong>the</strong> centre<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most peaceful culture <strong>in</strong> Europewhere runn<strong>in</strong>g is like danc<strong>in</strong>g butt naked<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> street. Well, that was <strong>the</strong>Latvian team with <strong>the</strong> Lithuanian <strong>in</strong>charge. They managed to misunderstandevery <strong>in</strong>struction possible andwere desperately try<strong>in</strong>g to catch <strong>the</strong>wrong bus to Borgo. It did br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mto Borgo, but for a “small” fee <strong>of</strong> EUR8.40 (<strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> free ride <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> group got). The trio was met withsarcastic “you rule, guys” and giggl<strong>in</strong>gbeh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir backs. Well, at least <strong>the</strong>ywere different…As <strong>the</strong> lectures passed by (and evenDeniss learned to more or less dist<strong>in</strong>guishbetween “him” and “her”) <strong>the</strong>exam approached. Although (supposedly)not really difficult, <strong>the</strong> tensionwas <strong>the</strong>re. Deniss left <strong>the</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ationroom with relief – he had most probablyjust saved Hanken Universitysome few cents for not pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g an extraA level certificate. The good newswas that he did feel he had learned agreat deal from <strong>the</strong> trip; and Swedishlanguage was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biggest fieldsthat Deniss had made a progress <strong>in</strong> (notenough time to practice it, unfortunately). The way back to Tall<strong>in</strong>n was evenmore fun, consider<strong>in</strong>g that this timeKrist<strong>in</strong>a lost all her money, Jevgenijsborrowed two euros from Deniss togamble beyond his budget constra<strong>in</strong>tand Vytautas struggled hard not to lose<strong>the</strong> money he had saved for <strong>the</strong> ticketback to Riga. He did borrow somemoney from Deniss to have a quick mealat Hesburger, though. By <strong>the</strong> way, haveyou ever seen <strong>the</strong> Tom & Jerry cartoonwhere <strong>the</strong> dog swore to protect <strong>the</strong>mouse? You must have! Now, <strong>in</strong> it, <strong>the</strong>reis an episode where Tom puts a juicybeefsteak on a str<strong>in</strong>g and lures <strong>the</strong> dogaway from protect<strong>in</strong>g Jerry. The way<strong>the</strong> dog reacted to that beefsteak– out<strong>of</strong>-controleyes, mouth full <strong>of</strong> slobber,sniff<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> scent <strong>of</strong> meat violently,crush<strong>in</strong>g everyth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> its path – was<strong>the</strong> way Vytautas reacted to sens<strong>in</strong>g hotwaffles with condensed milk (he sensed<strong>the</strong>m before he – or anyone else – saw<strong>the</strong>m). That was ano<strong>the</strong>r two euros out<strong>of</strong> Deniss’ pocket…On <strong>the</strong> way back to Riga, Deniss andJevgenijs watched Crime Spree moviewhich made <strong>the</strong>m laugh just loudenough not to let Vytautas sleep <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>back. As <strong>the</strong>y got back to Riga <strong>the</strong> tri<strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>ally realized what awaited <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>two days timeand <strong>the</strong> perspective<strong>of</strong> som u c hh a r dwork didnot seemappeal<strong>in</strong>gat all. However,w h e n<strong>the</strong>y didcome back toSSER, <strong>the</strong>y sawthat what F<strong>in</strong>landgave <strong>the</strong>m (above <strong>the</strong>Swedish lessons, andabove <strong>the</strong> chance to see aVytautasfar more superior culture)was a break just long enoughto replenish energy for this lastpush towards complet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first yearat SSER. Hurray to F<strong>in</strong>land!!!The <strong>Insider</strong> #3 (64), May 2004; Page 7
