7 Program AdministrationNew Cal Grant maximum annual award amounts may vary each year depending on the level of funding provided in the Annual State Budget.This chapter describes the types of awardsavailable through the Cal Grant program.It also explains the maximum awardamounts available, how students may use theirCal Grant eligibility and how schools mayactivate awards through WebGrants reports.7.1Award TypesCal Grant APurpose – Cal Grant A is a tuition assistanceprogram. Awards are for students enrolled in aprogram of instruction of not less than twoacademic years that leads to an associate orbaccalaureate degree requiring 48 semesterunits or that results in eligibility for transfer froma community college to a baccalaureate degreeprogram.There are three Cal Grant A awards available tostudents: Entitlement, Transfer Entitlement andCompetitive. Please refer to Chapter 3, “ProgramDescriptions and Eligibility” for more informationregarding these awards and the Cal Grant AReserve program.Eligible Schools – University of California andthe California State University, independentcolleges and some occupational and careercolleges are eligible schools for this program.$$Maximum Award Amount – The grant willpay tuition and fees up to the annual awardamount for recipients attending tuition chargingschools. Award amounts are determinedthrough the state budget process and maychange annually.New Cal Grant maximum annual award amountsmay vary each year depending on the level offunding provided in the Annual State Budget.Annual award amounts will not exceed themaximum annual award amounts for each typeof school. For example, if a student is attendinga California State University (CSU), the maximumannual award would be $2,520 (the maximumannual award amount for the 2005-06 academicyear at a CSU). If the student is attending a UC,the maximum annual award amount would be$6,141 (the maximum annual award amount forthe 2005-06 academic year at a UC).Tuition and Fees – Cal Grant A benefits coverup to full systemwide fees at the University ofCalifornia and the California State University. Itprovides tuition and fees at independent collegesin California. Cal Grant A awards cannot beused to pay Community College fees. Studentswho are awarded a Cal Grant A and attend aCalifornia Community College will be placed inCommunity College Reserve status and will notreceive payment until they transfer to a fouryearcollege.Cal Grant BPurpose – Cal Grant B is also a tuition assistanceprogram that has the added component of aliving stipend, called “Access.” This program isfor students from disadvantaged or low-incomefamilies. Coursework must be for at least oneacademic year, and students must be enrolledat least half-time.Eligible Schools – University of California andthe California State University, CaliforniaCommunity Colleges, independent colleges andsome occupational and career colleges areeligible schools for this program.October 20051
