SOCIAL NETWORKINGSocial Networking used to be getting together with your friends after school down at the empty lot and playing agame of baseball. As you got older social networking was getting together at the bar after work to complain aboutthe boss or talk about that new co-worker. For good or bad the electronic age has ushered in changes to every aspectof our lives. With the advent of the Internet Universities are able to share research data, which was how the internetwas actually started, and people were able to research things on their own. Now we see social groups becoming allthe rage. The social networking site "Facebook" has just reach 350 million users! That is a lot of socializing! As we look towards the future of our organization we needed to identify different ways of advertizing what we doand who we are to our little section of the world. Print advertizing has always been the preferred method fororganizations such as ours but the costs of going that route has gone up while the readership of newspapers andmagazines has gone down. Thanks to Kelly Martin (Bill & Patty's daughter) for starting a Midwestern CouncilGroup on Facebook! She had the right idea, lets get MC out where people are and give them information about ourorganization. To expand on that we have now started an advertizing campaign on Facebook that currently targetsindividuals in Wisconsin and Illinois. People who have expressed an interest in racing and other similar activitieswill get a small ad on the side of their screen with the ability to select it and be directed to the MC website. After 3weeks that ad has been shown on over 430,000 screens with over 100 people selecting it to see what we have tooffer.Do YOU have an idea for getting the word out about Midwestern Council? I would love to hear from you.Contact: Chuck Cassaro President@mcscc.org or call the Council office at 815-708-6796

Beware the pony czar ... and stuff by Hal AdkinsAll these appointed governmental “czars” that have been foisted upon us in recent months — many ofthem apparent bottom feeders according to their resumes and past and present associations — arenothing new to me as I had my first dust-up with assigned authority run a muck way back when I wassingle digits in age.About the best thing that could happen to us town kids was to have your parents rent a pony for aperiod of time during the summer. The next best thing was to have a neighbor kid’s parents rent one ...or maybe that was actually the best thing after all, as you would not have to do the feeding, wateringand shovel stuff. So the neighbor kids’ dad got them a pony with an attitude problem for a month. Actually I think thepony had issues his entire life, but nasty attitude or not, we were all having a ball, the ponynotwithstanding, taking turns riding this surly beast around. And when I say around, I don’t meanaround town or even the neighborhood. Oh noooo! We rode it in a rectangular pattern around a gardenin their backyard as that was the only place allowed. This undoubtedly further ticked off the pony. Wellit was better than pedaling our bikes, although it required much the same energy to get the animalmoving, and peace, harmony and a spirit of cooperation in sharing the rides, for the most part, abounded ... until SHE showed up.SHE was a cousin of the neighbor kids and for one afternoon was thrust upon us by the dad. SHE wasvery polite and charming when adults were around in an Eddie Haskell, “Leave it To Beaver” kind ofway. As SHE was older than the rest of us, maybe 12, the dad put her in charge of the Nasty PonyRide domain — even though we had gotten along without her influence perfectly well all the time beforewith very little parental yelling out the window to remind us to keep the pony watered and that weshould be shoveling stuff and not slinging it at each other. After the adults were out of earshot, SHE took over and laid down the law on how we had to qualify fora ride. As the newly appointed Pony Czar, we did not, of course, call her that but before the day wasdone we came up with a situation appropriate nickname for her that not coincidentally involved

equestrian body parts. SHE made up rules and regulations as SHE went along like any decent latterday czar who is either wholly clueless as to their duties or just following orders from above like yourcommon garden variety Nazi. Up to this point, we all thought the dumbest thing in the backyard was thepony. All rides would be limited to three laps, clockwise, and if we had any intent at all to indeed ride thefreaking psycho pony, we had to sit and wait in a neat line in the shade of the nearby tree, inalphabetical order. Yeah, like we could figure THAT out. Of course we had been doing much the samething all along, but the thought of someone just showing up and ordering us around pulled the rebelliontrigger in my head. I don’t know if it was the first time that trigger had been pulled, but sure as heck wasnot the last ... obviously.I told her I did not want to sit under the tree; SHE put her hands on my shoulders and said that I had to.I said, “I don’t wanna and keep your pony ride spoil’n girl cootie hands off me.” SHE then said I wouldno longer be able to ride the pony if I did not sit under the tree. I said, “I don’t wanna.” SHE suggestedthat I just go home then. I said, “I don’t wanna.” See even back then I was good with words and snappycomebacks. We were all used to and accepted parental and adult authority, but now here comes some appointedunderling with no experience or credibility on how to even remotely supervise a handful ofalphabetically challenged grade-schoolers and one belligerent pony walking clockwise for three lapsaround a backyard garden for an afternoon. But as I reflect upon it now, she would be perfectlyqualified to serve in the current administration as the National Healthcare Czar, or perhaps Speaker ofthe House.Funny ... but I don’t remember if I actually ended up riding the pony that day, but I do recall beingextremely angry, running about yelling, “Girl cooties! Girl cooties!” and throwing stuff. I guess I havebeen throwing stuff ever since.Duck!Short thought: I SAID DUCK!Hal Adkins resides in LaMoille. He can be reached at halaphoto@live.com.

Looking for Jack by Hal AdkinsJack, Jack Miller, you out there, boy? I am referring to the Jack Miller from LaMoille,Illinois. You need to get in touch with me. I saw you in an Internet advertisement from TheBoston Chronicle and sounds like you got a really good thing going with some sort of workat home plan, and I’m up for that. You apparently got into this through a well know Internetsearch engine company, which I hesitate to mention by name here ... but when I saw theresults you were getting working this program, it made my eyes GOOGLE!Is it true you are making $5,500 a month working at home no more than 10 hours a week?Gosh, why isn’t everyone doing something like this? That’s almost too good to be true! Ohwait, in the article it says you are “on your way” to making $5,500 a month. I see, kinda likeI’m on my way to winning the lottery. And what a lovely picture of you and your wife in thearticle. Forgive my candor, but frankly I think she is hot.I am also from LaMoille, Illinois, and oddly in a town of less than 1,000 you would havethought I’d have bumped into you at some point or heard your name mentioned. Ianguished over invading your privacy, but I did call directory assistance, and you were notlisted. Must only have a cell phone, eh? I then turned to the computer and tried the WhitePages listing; there is a Jack Miller or two around but none anywhere near LaMoille. I thentried a Google search — no one from LaMoille with that name. It’s almost like somebody made you and your hot wife up for some reason.I clicked to get more information on the program and encountered a pop-up whereas Icould have an online chat with someone named Tara who could answer all my questions.First I expressed my excitement that the Jack Miller from The Boston Chronicle article wasfrom my hometown, but that I was also concerned you were so hard to contact. Tara says:“This amazing offer is available for a limited time, CLICK HERE to take advantage now.” Ithen expressed my uneasiness that this might be a scam. Tara Says: “We are so confident

you will make money we are practically letting you try it out for free, blah, blah, blah. CLICKHERE.”Sorry to say it but I don’t think “Tara” is a real person, or maybe she is just very unflappablebecause every time I would type in something like “bite me,” or “kiss my ***,” she wouldpolitely respond with more, “blah, blah, blah, CLICK HERE.”I was getting quite suspicious of the whole deal, so out of curiosity I Googled ... a search forThe Boston Chronicle, and by golly, I did find reference to it! But unless I missedsomething, the only paper by that name was in operation before the American Revolution. So I thought I’d contact the lady reporter who wrote the piece on you, apparently sometimebefore 1776, one Vallery Clinton. By her photo she is very attractive, although I still thinkyour wife is hotter. There was no contact information or link so I Googled her too. Seemsshe must lead a double life as about the only thing I could find on a Vallery Clinton was aYouTube video, something about a “drag queen.” Must race cars or something. Surelooked different though and dressed really weird, and I don’t mean like in a colonial kind ofway. On the Comments Page I wanted to ask if this was really the opportunity of the century, and what century that would be exactly, only to find it was disabled. All the comments wereglowing accounts on making money with the program, but to me seemed all very similarlike they were written by the same person. It sounded like something Tara would say butthere was no reference to CLICK HERE.To wrap things up I’m beginning to think this is all truly a scam and although I’ve searchedfor him, even mighty Google ... doesn’t know Jack. Pity, I really wanted to be on my way tomaking $5,500 a month working no more than 10 hours a week. It’s either that or run forCongress, although they do have better hours, more income and already know how to runscams.I do hope to hear from Jack at some point, though, and I still think his wife is hot. ValleryClinton, not so much.Short Thought: In the words of Abraham Lincoln, “You can fool all the people some of thetime ... blah, blah, blah, CLICK HERE.”Hal Adkins resides in LaMoille.
