ASP ALUMNUS PHOTOGRAPHERJune 9th, - September 13th, 2011 at ASP - The Cube; Vernissage—June 9th , 15:30- 16:30―Student Photographer-Learning a Craft, Developing an Art, Thinking about Careers‖Since his interest in photography was first piqued in a high school black & white film-based photographyclass (in which students used SLR film cameras, developed their own rolls of exposed film, andused enlargers and chemical baths to make their own prints), Eric Hian-Cheong has been an avidamateur photographer. He loves the craft. He could develop into an artist. Photography may be a lifelonghobby for him. Or, it could be the basis for a professional career in photographic fine art, photojournalism,graphic design, publishing, advertising, public relations, communications, portraiture, orany number of related fields in which image-making is a key component.Using his photographs as illustrations, Eric shows the viewer some basic concepts and lessons that allstudent photographers must think about and learn. Some topics are posed as questions that viewerscan answer for themselves; some topics are about mastering a technique and using the tools of photography—gainingcompetence in the medium; some topics are about aesthetics and artistry.Among the topics presented are: showing scale; choosing B&W or color; night-time shooting & tripoduse; waiting for ―the right moment;‖ getting in close for detail; lens choice; using reflective surfaces;shooting into the sun; merging several exposures into a single image; post-processing; and others.
