TRANSPARENT SOLUTION 7

What is Partnering?
Partnering is a label used for a variety of innovative
approaches to managing relationships between
organisations in construction.
These all have one thing in common; an intention to move
beyond the limitations of traditional projects to where long
term supply relationships develop.
The Latham, Rethinking Construction, Accelerating Change
and Modernising Construction reports all concluded that the
UK construction industry was wasteful and inefficient,
resulting in low profit levels and lack of customer focus.
Rethinking Construction Report:
“...The industry must replace competitive tendering with
long-term relationships based on clear measurement of
performance in quality and efficiency...”.
National Audit Office
The National Audit Office stated that 70% of all publicly
procured projects were over time, and or over budget.
“Experience has shown that acceptance of the lowest price
bid does not provide value for money in either the final cost
of construction or the through-life and operational costs”
e - Trading Statement
Grafton is committed to the use of e-trading in its
partnerships with suppliers and customers.
The benefits of e-trading (also known as e-commerce)
compared with traditional phone, post or fax solutions
include:
Reduction in paper and stationery costs
Reduction in the labour costs involved in handling paper
and document keying
Automatic document matching of orders against invoices
/ deliveries
 Eliminate human error
Improved visibility and reporting in relation to supply
chain transactions and pricing
 Faster document delivery
 Increased security, resilience and availability
An e-Trading Portal Solution has been implemented
which allows Grafton Group companies to exchange
key business documents such as orders, invoices, credits,
delivery notes and statements electronically with their
suppliers and customers.
Message formats that can be exchanged include XML (such
as Basda e-build,) Tradacoms, Edifact and CSV, or any
other format with a fixed structure and suitable data
content. Documents can be delivered direct with the
e-trading portal over the Internet using FTP, by email or
through any of the e-trading hubs that operate in the UK
construction industry such as Coins, Causeway, Asite etc.
As part of Grafton Group’s continuing push for supply chain
excellence, Buildbase, Plumbase, Jackson Building Centres
FSC and PEFC certified timber
from Buildbase
SUSTAINABLE TIMBER? CERTIFIED TIMBER? ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY?
If you’ve been asked environmental questions about the origins of your timber, Buildbase can help
you answer them. We support the internationally recognised Forest Stewardship Council system
(FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC).
WHAT IS THE FSC AND WHO SUPPORTS IT?
The Forest Stewardship Council is a world-wide, non-profit, non-governmental organisation. It
promotes the responsible growing, harvesting and on-going replanting of timber. FSC is supported
by Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, and WWF International. You may find specifications from
local authorities or architects asking for FSC-certified timber: you can obtain FSC timber and
wood products from Buildbase.
HOW DOES IT HELP THE FORESTS?
Buying timber with the FSC label helps you to say ‘No’ to the destruction of the world’s forests and
‘Yes’ to responsibly-produced timber and wood products. Timber carrying an FSC label can be
traced back to the well-managed forest it came from. Those forests, and all the stages in the
timber’s journey to Buildbase, have been independently checked and given separate certificates.
You can track timber back to the forest producer, by following this chain of FSC certificates - the
‘chain of custody’- using the certificate numbers. This unique system makes sure your timber comes
from a well managed source.
HOW CAN FSC HELP YOU?
In a competitive marketplace, we all need to create a difference. Give yourself an edge by
understanding environmental timber sourcing. It shows that you take pride in your work and that
you take customers’ concerns seriously. It shows that you want to offer them the best options and
the best service - just as Buildbase wants to offer you. Telling your customers that you’re buying
FSC-certified timber from a Buildbase branch could open up new business. For example local
authorities now have sustainability targets and may value this knowledge. Look out for the FSC
logo on packaging and products.
ABOUT THE PEFC
The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is an
independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes
sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC provides an
assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the
sustainable management of forests. PEFC is a global umbrella organisation for the assessment of
and mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes developed in a multi-stakeholder
process. These national schemes build upon the inter-governmental processes for the promotion of
sustainable forest management, a series of on-going mechanisms supported by 149 governments
in the world covering 85% of the world's forest area. PEFC has in its membership 32 independent
national forest certification systems of which 25 to date have been through a rigorous assessment
process involving public consultation and the use of independent consultants to provide the
assessments on which mutual recognition decisions are taken by the membership. Some 30
schemes account for nearly 200 million hectares of certified forests producing millions of tonnes of
certified timber to the marketplace making PEFC the world's largest resource of certified timber.
The other national members schemes are at various stages of development and are working
towards mutual recognition under the PEFC processes. For further information see the
PEFC website.
