About the SpeakersDr. John Sorensen is Acting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the Department <strong>of</strong>Restorative <strong>Dentistry</strong> and Chair <strong>of</strong> the Clinic Revisions Task Force,<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Washington. He was founder and director <strong>of</strong> the PacificDental Institute in Portland, Oregon, conducting clinical trials, invitro materials testing, and <strong>of</strong>fering CE programs. During that timeSorensen was in full-time private practice limited to prosthodonticsfrom 1993 to 2012. He is a Diplomate <strong>of</strong> the American Board <strong>of</strong><strong>Prosthodontics</strong>. Previously he was The ODA Centennial Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong>Restorative <strong>Dentistry</strong> and Director, Dental Clinical Research Center atOregon Health Sciences <strong>University</strong>. Dr. Sorensen has published over 80 research articlesand chapters as well as over 130 research abstracts. He has given over 150 invited lecturesin 31 countries.Dr. Mark Kutcher is an Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Oral Medicine in the Department <strong>of</strong> DentalEcology at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> North Carolina <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>. He received his dentaldegree from Temple <strong>University</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>, his certificate in Oral-Maxill<strong>of</strong>acialRadiology from Vanderbilt Medical <strong>School</strong>, and his masters in Oral Medicine and Pathologyfrom Indiana <strong>University</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>. He was Chair <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> DiagnosticSciences from 1988 until 1994.He teaches courses in Oral Medicine, Internal Medicine,Physical Evaluation, Microbiology and Pathology, and is an adjunct attending in theDepartment <strong>of</strong> Dermatology in the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medicine. Dr. Kutcher's interests includethe medicinal management <strong>of</strong> various oral conditions. He is a Diplomate <strong>of</strong> the AmericanAcademy <strong>of</strong> Oral Medicine and is President <strong>of</strong> the Academy this year.Dr. Matthew Hopfensperger is a Clinical Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the Department <strong>of</strong><strong>Prosthodontics</strong> at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> North Carolina <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>. Dr. Hopfenspergerjoined the faculty in 1998 and is the Director <strong>of</strong> the extensive <strong>UNC</strong> Predoctoral DentalImplant Program. He also initiated the elective <strong>UNC</strong> Predoctoral Implant Surgery Course.He received his DDS degree from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Michigan <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong> in 1986.The following year he attended the GPR Program at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.After gaining additional private practice experience, he returned to <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Michiganand received a MS degree in <strong>Prosthodontics</strong> in 1991. Upon graduation, he served on thefaculty <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Western Australia from 1992 to 1993. In conjunction with hiswife, Dr. Sian Kwa, (who is also a Prosthodontist) he founded the first specialty practice <strong>of</strong>the Netherlands, which they operated together for 5 years until 1998. Dr. Hopfenspergermaintains an active practice in the <strong>UNC</strong> Dental Faculty Practice, which focuses onadvanced restorative and implant dentistry.Photo By Seth Oliver
