NoteThis is part of a series of Third World Network papers writtenin 1992 that assessed the key outcomes of the United NationsConference on Environment and Development (UNCED) thatwas held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 3-14 June 1992. The UNConference on Sustainable Development that will take placein June 2012, once again in Rio, is faced with even deeperchallenges than those of 20 years ago. Crises are prevalent inevery dimension of sustainability - economic, environmentaland social. The context and the fundamental causes of thedevelopment crisis that framed the 1992 UNCED still prevailtoday. We find our assessments of the major UNCED outcomesequally relevant today and hope that they can contribute tothe 2012 Conference objective of securing “renewed politicalcommitment for sustainable development”.
