Over the years it has undergone anumber of revamps.Originally copied on a Gestetner, it wasfirst professionally printed in November1965. In 1970 the black and whitephotographic cover was replaced with newsstories. Mastheads came and went, andeditors experimented with paper size andcolumn widths. Colour photos were firsttrialled in 1995 and full colour wasintroduced in 2005.Following a review of the University’spublications last year, it was decided tore-launch Chronicle in 2011 to make it a moreengaging and relevant magazine for bothstaff and students. No longer justdistributed to staff via the internal mail,the six-weekly magazine will also beavailable to students via drop boxes aroundcampus. We have moved away from theformal look with a front page lead in favourof a colourful photographic cover. Changescontinue inside with a colourful, freshlay-out.One of the biggest changes will be incontent. Criticised over the years for beingtoo much part of the establishment, theChronicle welcomes genuine debate oncurrent topics of interest at the Universityor in the wider education sector via guestcolumns and letters to the editor. Lettersshould be short and sweet (150 words orless) and publication will be at the editor’sdiscretion. Letters and contributions for ournew “Speaker’s Corner” guest column canbe sent to communications@canterbury.ac.nz. Another feature will be readers’ polls,giving staff and students the opportunityto cast their vote on issues of the day.The look of the Chronicle may havechanged over the years but the aims remainthe same – to inform, educate and promotea sense of pride across the Universitycommunity.Jeanette Colman, Editor10UC students on exchange at theUniversity of Adelaide are busyjuggling studies with a widerange of social activities.Thanks to everyone else who’s playeda part making this issue happen.2
