Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School“ History of Baseball in Society”Fall 2011Instructor: Mr. Chris ShiversContact: Cshivers@mercycatholic.orgPhone: 770‐461‐2202 ext 417Course Description:The history of baseball in the United States provides a way for us to examine and evaluate social andcultural change in a 150 year period that saw the United States evolve from a fragile, agrarian republicinto an urban, industrialized nation and a world power. That evolution so profoundly changed the nationand the lives of the people who lived then that it led to the creation of concepts that we take forgranted today such as leisure and consumption. This experience called things into question such as whatconstituted “ work”, who counted as an American, how production should be organized, and even basicnotions like what it meant to be a man or a woman. The changes have so utterly shaped our world thatit is easy to forget that there was nothing natural or predestined about them: Americans were bitterlydivided over these changes, and other possible outcomes existed. We are concerned with the history ofbaseball as a window into social, political, ideological, demographic, and economic changes and thetensions surrounding them.Like the nation that embraced it, baseball is full of intriguing contradictions. Associated withleisurely rural scenes, organized baseball grew as a by‐product of industrialization and it came of age inAmerican cities. For much of its existence, the “national” game excluded large racial and geographicelements of society. Constantly anxious to affirm its own respectability, baseball repeatedly found itselfmired in scandal. Billed as an escape from the taxing and grubby concerns of the workday, baseballregularly became entangled in conflicts between labor and capital. Baseball, in short, reflects keycontests over the nation’s social and cultural values as those values evolved to suit new times. To beclear from the outset: this is not a sports course, but a history course in which we use baseball as a lensto examine changes in values and ideas that accompanied growth and technological change.Materials:Pen and paperOLM Grading Scale:100‐90=A 79‐74=C 69‐0=F89‐80=B 73‐70=D

Course Goals:This course will improve students’ abilities to:Use baseball as a way to understand and evaluate social and cultural change in the United States as thenation underwent industrialization, urbanization and modernizationAssess secondary sources (historians’ interpretations of aspects of the history of baseball and Americansociety)Analyze primary sourcesFormulate their own interpretations, based on evaluation of primary sourcesSupport their interpretations with evidenceWriteKey Themes :Industrialization, Urbanization, and ModernizationThe Rise and Fall of Racial SegregationWork and LeisureCapital and LaborProduction and ConsumptionGenderGrade Components:TESTS‐ 50%Tests will include short answer, multiple choice, and essays based on the material covered inclass and in selected reading material.PRIMARY SOURCE ESSAY‐20%5-8 pages. Due November 1 hard copy in class. On your own, find a primary source having to do withbaseball prior to 1920. The source may be a visual source (an advertisement, print, early baseball card,sheet music cover, or illustration from a guide such as Spalding’s Base Ball Guide) or a textual source (anarticle, a novel, a letter or diary, anything written). You must find your own source; you may not justchoose a source from the Reserve Readings. This is the one time this semester you must do someindependent searching. Write a paper analyzing what the source and its context reveal about baseball andchanging 19 th century or early 20 th century values. Support your interpretation with class readings. Submita copy of the source along with the paper (unless it is very long, like a novel, in which case submit a shortexcerpt).PARTICIPATION‐ 15%Taking an active role in discussions and activities comprises just as much of your responsibility in this classas writing the papers. You receive a grade on the quality of your contributions, just as you receive gradeson written work. Class debate and discussion means being able to discuss topics in a logical manor withoutbecoming emotional and allowing to view all sides based on material read not on personal experiences.HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK‐ 15%Written narrative based on material covered in class, will generally be assigned once per week.Evaluation Procedures:* Class discussion * Participation* Research Paper * Teacher prepared tests & Quizzes* Homework assignments

Classroom Expectations:All students are expected to act in accordance with the discipline prescribed in the student OLMhandbook. Actions that are deemed inappropriate with that code of conduct will result in disciplinaryaction. Along with those policies the students are expected to do the following:* Participate* Arrive on time to class fully prepared to participate* Complete writing assignments on schedule* Participate in discussions* Respect the viewpoints, opinions, and responses of peers* Complete all work assigned by the teacherPhilosophyThe values of honesty, scholarship and trust are essential to the mission of Our Lady of Mercy CatholicHigh School. We strive to provide an environment that recognizes these values as instrumental tobuilding the moral character of our students while stressing the importance of personal responsibilityand fairness. Failing toabide by the Honor Code will result in an automatic referral to the Honor Council.Honor Code PledgeIn order to protect the aforementioned values, students will pledge all submitted work for every subjectincluding class work, homework, quizzes, tests, papers, and projects. The pledge for all work is asfollows:"I have neither given nor received any unauthorized aid on this assignment."Any work turned in without the pledge will be deemed inadmissible by the teacher until the pledge isincluded.
