2.1 Simplifying Expressions115As you can see from the explanation in Example 9, we use the distributiveproperty to simplify expressions in which parentheses are preceded by a negativesign. In general we can write−(a + b) = −1(a + b)= −a + (−b)= −a − bThe negative sign outside the parentheses ends up changing the sign of eachterm within the parentheses. In words, we say “the opposite of a sum is the sumof the opposites.”C The Value of an ExpressionRecall from Chapter 1, an expression like 3x + 2 has a certain value depending onwhat number we assign to x. For instance, when x is 4, 3x + 2 becomes 3(4) + 2,or 14. When x is −8, 3x + 2 becomes 3(−8) + 2, or −22. More Applications 2.7Now that you have worked through a number of application problems using ourblueprint, you probably have noticed that step 3, in which we write an equationthat describes the situation, is the key step. Anyone with experience solving applicationproblems will tell you that there will be times when your first attempt atstep 3 results in the wrong equation. Remember, mistakes are part of the processof learning to do things correctly. Many times the correct equation will becomeobvious after you have written an equation that is partially wrong. In any case itis better to write an equation that is partially wrong <strong>and</strong> be actively involved withthe problem than to write nothing at all. Application problems, like other problemsin algebra, are not always solved correctly the first time.A Consecutive IntegersOur next example involves consecutive integers. When we ask for consecutiveintegers, we mean integers that are next to each other on the number line, like 5<strong>and</strong> 6, or 13 <strong>and</strong> 14, or −4 <strong>and</strong> −3. In the dictionary, consecutive is defined as followingone another in uninterrupted order. If we ask for consecutive odd integers,then we mean odd integers that follow one another on the number line. For example,3 <strong>and</strong> 5, 11 <strong>and</strong> 13, <strong>and</strong> −9 <strong>and</strong> −7 are consecutive odd integers.
