Unilever wants to see African agricultural potential fulfilled <strong>in</strong>a way that creates susta<strong>in</strong>able bus<strong>in</strong>ess opportunities – particularly <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> smallholderfarmers <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to its local <strong>and</strong> global supply cha<strong>in</strong>s. This is why Unilever takes avalue cha<strong>in</strong> approach that supports local sourc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> process<strong>in</strong>g as well as exportproduction <strong>and</strong> creates value throughout <strong>the</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong>.Unilever is committed to facilitat<strong>in</strong>g partnerships, leverag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>and</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>gexpertise as well as stimulat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> supply side by creat<strong>in</strong>g market dem<strong>and</strong>. Unileverproposes to engage <strong>in</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g up four value cha<strong>in</strong> partnerships <strong>in</strong> tea (Kenya, Tanzania,Rw<strong>and</strong>a), cassava (Nigeria) <strong>for</strong> sorbitol <strong>and</strong> starch, palm oil (Ghana, Nigeria) <strong>and</strong> cocoa(Tanzania). In addition, Unilever is propos<strong>in</strong>g to explore local sourc<strong>in</strong>g opportunities<strong>for</strong> vegetable oils, fruits <strong>and</strong> vegetables <strong>in</strong> Mozambique, Tanzania <strong>and</strong> Ethiopia.Unilever will put an emphasis on <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g smallholders <strong>in</strong>to supply cha<strong>in</strong>s throughits commitment to susta<strong>in</strong>able sourc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment.Unilever estimates its proposed partnerships could result <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> company sourc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>follow<strong>in</strong>g products <strong>for</strong> use <strong>in</strong> local production <strong>and</strong> export: an additional 30,000-40,000tons of tea, 300,000 tons of palm oil <strong>and</strong> 100,000 tons of cassava. Unilever is stillexplor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> potential <strong>for</strong> additional sourc<strong>in</strong>g of cocoa. Its <strong>in</strong>itial estimate is that thismight stimulate around €300 million of <strong>in</strong>vestment from those <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>partnerships <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration of around 40,000 additional smallholder farms <strong>in</strong>to itsvalue cha<strong>in</strong>s, potentially improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lives of over 100,000 people. Across <strong>the</strong> board,<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se partnerships Unilever will cont<strong>in</strong>ue work to reduce its environmental footpr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>and</strong> reach its target of 100% susta<strong>in</strong>ably sourced agricultural products.United Phosphorous Limited (UPL) is an India-based seed <strong>and</strong> crop protection company withplans to <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania, Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso <strong>and</strong> Mozambique.UPL is explor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestments of approximately US$150 million <strong>in</strong> 18 Sub-SaharanAfrican countries over 7-10 years with <strong>the</strong> aim of impact<strong>in</strong>g 200,000 smallholderfarmers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> near term <strong>and</strong> up to 750,000 farmers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> long term. Through <strong>the</strong>se<strong>in</strong>vestments, farmer productivity could <strong>in</strong>crease 59-85%, translat<strong>in</strong>g to US$100 million<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> project phase <strong>and</strong> around US$500 million <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> long term. Impact on farm<strong>in</strong>comes would be between 50-113%. UPL identifies Africa as a critical <strong>and</strong> importantregion <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir growth.14
