Hi All,EditorialWelcome to the final edition of Anything but Average for 2009. December is upon us once more andChristmas is looming. I hope you’ve all started your Christmas shopping… I certainly haven’t.A lot has happened since the last magazine. The last week of October, we made the trip to Miles for my uncle’s 60 th birthday. Aside from a few carissues, it was a great trip. Elliott travelled pretty well. He had his moments but given the amount ofkm’s we were covering each day, he was excellent! The first night we drove to Benalla and met up with my sister. We then travelled to the Warrembungleswhere we camped. The third night was a bit of a disaster. We had planned on camping just short ofMiles, around Condamine. My sister almost ran out offuel and we lost contact with her. So dad decided hewould wait for her to catch up and we went ahead tofind camp for the night. The two sites dad hadsuggested were no good and because it was almostdark, we decided to just go to the Condamine caravanpark and get a cabin. Although this was discussed, forsome reason mum and dad didn’t check the caravanpark, they just put out a call on the CB. Unfortunatelywe didn’t hear it because we were off at the pubhaving a feed. So we spent the night in relativecomfort and everyone else continues on to my unclesand set up camp it the dark!We spent three nights in Miles, Ray’s party was on thesecond night. It was great to have my dad’s side of thefamily together, including my cousins and their kids, for the first time ever.On the way home we had a few car problems –a blown head gasket made the engine get pretty hot; abroken thermo fan made it incredibly hot. We could turn off the a/c for a bit but it was prettyunbearable. We tried to get a replacement fan at Nissan in Parkes but they didn’t have any in stock.Luckily David dropped into an auto elecs and they pointed him towards a wreckers where he bought afan and motor (separate). We then drove up the road and he fitted it in a truck stop. It wasn’t quiteright but it got us home. The following weekend we had another wedding which was lovely and then the next week, I startedworking again. I have now been back at the grindstone for almost a month. I think I’ve settled in to itok. Luckily I’m only working 3-4 days a week and have Thursdays free to catch up on the houseworkand with friends. It’s incredible how having less time has made me even more efficient. Well sort of… Iam writing this in the same week it’s due to go out. This mag is a bumper! The main feature is, of course, the concourse. It was great to see so many there, especially as it wasn’t the nicest day weather-wise. Check out the COLOUR photos! On the event front, there are also more details about the 2010 Nationals including an itinerary of the event and a plan forthe trip up and back. Also in this mag is another article about a wiper conversion sent through from the Qld Club and anarticle from Carl, one of our NT members. And of course there’s the usual suspects; President’s Report,Sectrary’s Report and a Parts ‘n’ Tech update.I’d like to thank all of the contributors this year. Withoutyou, this magazine would be nothing more than a diary ofmy life.I hope all of our member have a safe and happy Christmasand that you enjoy this edition of Anything But Average. The next editon will be a Jan/Feb mag and wil bedistributed early next year.Rachel.Please send all magazine contributions, including advertisements, to the editor:91 Stockdale Av, Bentleigh East, 3165 orEmail: leylandp76@gmail.comDeadline: Last Monday of Every month(for the following month’s mag)

Past Events2009 Concourse D’Elegance – Sunday November 29, 2009What a great day! We had seventeen cars in attendance this year, including Rick’s Kimberly and Gunter’sHolden ute (eighteen, if you include the P76 cleverly disguised as a Nissan Patrol). That’s one more thanlast year! Will Ernst brought along his newest addition, an Omega Navy Targa, which he bought for his daughterZara-Louise as part of his evil plan to ensure the girls take and interest the cars too!We also had a visitor from Rushworth who read about the event in the Weekly Times. He brought alongone of his many (and I mean MANY) P’s. As Ken putit; given the cars he owns, he could start his ownclub!Another non-member in attendance was Jeff. Jeff is amember of the Mazda club and an avid modeller andhe thought we’d be interested in seeing his model P76collection. WOW! He’s modified and scratch built a lotof P76’s. On Sunday he brought along a stationwagon, a ute, a 1-tonner and a couple of others. Andthat wasn’t his entire collection. He also has a stretchlimo and a couple of others at home. Maybe he’llcome along next year. The location was lovely but the car park was a bit small and because the weather was a bit ordinary, there wasn’t the public exposure we were hoping for. However, we had a BBQ lunch, enjoyed the wildlife, gave away a few trophies and all in all, had a great day! Thanks to all who made it this year, especially the out-of-towners. Congratulations to the trophy winners. The Trophy WinnersBest Modified – Trevor BrownBest V8 - John BeattieBest V8 RU – Marcus KneeboneBest 6 - Martyn HayesBest 6 RU & Peoples Choice - Kevin Smith

Future EventsCANCELLED! Christmas Function – Sunday December 13, 2009This event has been cancelled as December is just too busy!! Instead we will try to organise somethingearly next year as we launch into a Nationals year.RACV 2010 Australia Day Display – Tuesday January 26, 2010You are no longer able to enter this event as the deadline was November 30. However, keep it marked onyour calendar as it is a great day to go and have a look at some beautiful vehicles.23 rd Picnic at Hanging RockAnother great car show! This is apparently the largest singleday event in Victoria’s motoring calendar Entry is $20 fordisplay cars and $20 for general admission so you may as welltake your P out for the day. To ensure the P76’s are displayedtogether, we will meet at Woodend and travel in convoy to theHanging Rock at 7:30am sharp. Please be on time. ContactJohn or see www.picnicathangingrock.com.au for details.2010 Nationals, Motto Farm – Easter, 2010This is shaping up to be an event not to be missed. An itinerary has been released (and is included in thismag). Also, we have a plan as to how we, the Vic club, will travel and hopefully meet other clubs alongthe way. A rough plan is included in Ken’s report. Stay tuned for more detail. If you have any other suggestions, please forward them to Ken or John.Donated…A very kind P76 Club member has donated one of their vehicles to the club. Though the fate of this carhas not yet been decided, the committee and members greatly appreciate the generosity of ouranonymous donor.Another donation…Another donation was made to the club recently of a more historical nature. John Beattie managed toacquire and consequently pass onto the club, the second original 35mm film strips of “The Carmakers”.This unique item has been added to the asset register and again, on behalf of the committee andmembers, thank you John, for your kindness.

President’s PageWell here we are close to Christmas once more. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of yourcommittee to wish all our members and their families a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.We have recently concluded our 2009 Concourse and congratulations to the winners of the various trophies. Itwas good to see the turnout of 17 P76's, a Kimberley and the Holden Ute with a P76 V8 engine once again. Itwas a beautiful day with only a shower or two. The hills around the Dandenongs were looking glorious – thegreenest I have seen them for many a year. The new venue was very different from the Caribbean Gardens –the only downside was the lack of opportunity to show off our cars to the general public – something we willaddress next year. The standard of cars attending the Concourse continues to improve which is most encouraging – members aretaking the time and making the effort to continually upgrade the cars. Well done to all who attended, especiallythose travelling some considerable distance – we hope you all enjoyed the event. While John Ernst has a number of important events scheduled for next year, I would like to outline our plans forthe Nationals. We intend to travel in convoy up the Hume Highway leaving Melbourne on the morning ofWednesday 30 March 2010. We will overnight in Yass. Julie and I will probably be staying at The HamiltonHume Motor Inn in Yass. There are plenty of other motels in Yass as well as a large camp ground. As it is soclose to Easter I will be booking this accommodation in the very near future. I suggest that those that areattending the Nationals and wish to join the convoy do the same. Accommodation en route will NOT be bookedby the club – it is an individual member's responsibility. We will then leave Yass on Thursday morning and have a leisurely drive to Goulburn where I hope we can meetup with the members of the ACT club and the NSW Country Club (and maybe even members from the SA club)for the drive up to Motto Farm. We will be taking the M7 by-pass so we will not be driving through Sydney –this is a toll road but the Melbourne E tags are accepted. We should be arriving in Motto Farm by midafternoon. What a sight that will be if we can get all the members of these clubs driving up the Hume and ontothe Newcastle free-way in their Leylands in convoy! All in all this should be a comfortable drive of perhaps 7-8 hours on the Wednesday and about 5 – 6 on theThursday. The trip back will be up to individuals, but Julie and I plan to return the same way staying overnight at Yass onthe Monday 5th April 2010. If you wish to join the convoy, please let me know where on the Hume you want tomeet up so we can agree times etc. Drop me an email or give me a call so we can add you to the list.Have a great Christmas period and stay safe on the roads. We will see you all in the New Year.KenMembership Matters…As a result of recent committee discussions, the amount due for Family membership will be increased to $75 asof July 2010. As mentioned in the June-July edition, this increase is required to cover the cost of increasedinsurance.Since introducing the family membership, we have seen an increase in the attendance of spouses and childrenwhich is fantastic. In the coming year we want to hold even more social events and encourage our members tobring their families along. If you have any concerns about the increased membership fees, please contact Ken.Deluxe Models…The P76 Deluxe kits being made by the NSW Owners Club are now ready forsale. The models do come as kits not assembled $75 each. Assembled and painted$75 + $65 for regular colours - included is the "Peel Me Grape". If you want othercolours there will be an additional cost required due to buying the paint. Each club will only get 11 models on the first allocation. Some more may becomeavailable as there are only 100 being made. All models are numbered with #76being auction at the Easter Nationals. Please contact John Ernst if you would like topurchase one of these models.

Rantings of a P NutSecretary’s ReportHello everyone,I have been a busy boy lately, working on a few Mini engines and getting Rachel’s Marina upand running for our concourse (you may remember the Marina didn’t quite make it last year).Well, not much has changed with the Marina. Leading up to the Concourse weekend I decidedI would finally change the transmission so we could take it to this years Concourse, as my P76engine is taking longer than expected. Our Vice President Rick and I recently travelled to awrecker’s yard in Yarram to purchase a good S/H automatic trans for the Marina and aftergetting it home I gave it a good clean, service and painted it in its original red in preparationto fit it.Unfortunately, work commitments stopped me from working on the car until the day beforethe Concourse so I got up early and got stuck into it. I pulled the faulty auto trans out, replaced the drive plate, fitted the new transmission, greased the front end, tidied up thewiring and basically fixed any other problems the car had. I then drove the car up the road tofind the new trans works perfectly but a loud bearing noise was coming from the rear end. Onfurther investigation under the car I could see nothing wrong until I removed the diff cover, Ihad a drain tin under the diff but when I pulled the cover off there was no oil in sight! The poorold Marina must have had one hell of a life before we found it, a spun big end bearing, abroken transmission and a diff void of oil; I hate to think what the young girl (learner driver)did to the car! I will go back to Yarram and purchase the good diff out of the donor car andhopefully I’ll get the Marina back on the road again soon. Our concourse has been and gone for another year, this time in a great new venue set in thebeautiful forest next to Emerald lake. We had a good turn out of cars this year, in fact onemore than last year even though we had a rainy day. The cars all looked fantastic amongst thetrees and Puffing Billy. So well done to the trophy winners, your cars always look great and theaccolades are well deserved.Well done to our Parts & Tech officer, Phil, on sourcing some suppliers of new P76 parts. Itlooks like we will have new SS rear sill finishers and new steering wheels before too long soour club funds will be going towards having some ultra rare, very sort after parts remade. The 2010 Nationals is shaping up to be another great event. I am busily preparing my P76 forthe trip to NSW along with at least 2 other committee members. I hope we can get a goodnumber of Vic cars to attend the event; Ken has made some good plans for the trip so pleaseget your P76 out of the shed and have it ready to join us on the convoy.I finally acquired aGenuine BMC Hydrolasticsuspension Pump recentlyso if anyone needs thesuspension pumped up ontheir Mini, Morris 1100,Austin 1800 etc. give mea call.RegardsDavid.

NT UpdateBy Carl OberhouserWell hi one and all P76ers (this is also our trivia night name).I would like to thank Phil for his dash info and I, like him, do appreciate that my article was read and foundinteresting.I’d like to say that this car was a one owner from QLD and sold to his nephew as a way of giving the oldtimer a dignified way of taking some badly needed money. He was a fond collector of the P76 and hadquite a few at any one given time.I wasn’t going to keep this car till I found out it was an original Executive with many extras (thanks for theinfo Martyn). It’s currently white, but should be Bitter Apricot…. the preferred colour if the truth be told. What I want to do to my car will not make me popular with the purist but as a driver (I’ve been told I’m anut behind the wheel; in a safe way). I’m going to modify the car so as to make it more track orientatedwhile trying to keep the factory look. Externally she’s going to be stock standard but I’d like to add a willpower 4 Barrell manifold and a Holley 465CFM carburettor. The 465CFM carby is something I’m used to and know how good it works. I have one on my 4.2ltr – 253Holden Commodore Cup car. I can tune this thing in 10 minutes with a lamda gauge and a 2km straight. In the transmission area I intend to run an 1800-2000Rpm stall converter to keep the revs up… you got toadmit, a P76 with a good exhaust sounds great, so imagine how good she’ll sound with a high rev, as shetakes off from the lights. This increase in revs is also good for club days at the local track.Speaking of exhaust, the one on it now is very good so when it burns out I’ll make a mandrel bent 2 into 1system with a set of extractors (they’re so expensive for the P76).I’ve initiated a massive brake upgrade through Hoppers Stoppers out at (you’d never guess where –Hoppers Crossing, VIC). They’re a sponsor of mine and have kept the brakes A1 on my race cars for over 7years now, with a commonsense no bull approach. They have (with the help of Martyn Hayes once again) made 2 systems available to me and any P76ers whowish to upgrade their front brake packages. The first requires a minimum of a 15” wheel with a brake rotor size of 300mm and the second with a tyresize of no less than 17” with a rotor size of 330mm. These brake packages utilise the BA11 calliper and ishighly regarded as one of the best callipers made. This also ensures you will have a late model brake padfor a long time to come.So far I have managed to make some deep dishwheels. They are JW’s – race engineers. 16” x8” fronts & 16” x 10” rears (yes, I am paintingthem repsol orange).A special plug is required here to Super CheapAuto who supplied every nolathane rubber bushfor the front end. They were the only majorspare parts supplier chain store willing toresearch and find the correct rubbers andbushings to fit the P76 and delivered to mewithin 2 working days (something totallyunheard of in the NT). Total cost for all rubberswas $179.50.Here are some pics of the rubbers for those who wish to get some.Front Strut Bar toChassis KitBall joint dust covers –notice the grease dimplefor injecting grease intothe jointLower control armrubbersSway bar rubbers

(Another) Wiper ConversionBy Garth MorrisWell as everyone has heard, I’ve decided tochange my wipers over to a system thatdoesn’t involve a park circuit. This has themain advantage of being instantaneous whenthe wiper switch is activated. On a normal P76wiper system the linkages have to unwindbefore they can start to clear or wipe thewindscreen. With this new system I canactually wipe the screen as soon as I touch thewipe button. The system uses a late model Commodorewiper motor which is mounted onto the P76wiper bracket. The system also requires amodified wiper switch. The standard Leylandwiper switch is unable to provide the correctconnection for the Commodore wiper motor towork. I have made a small circuit board upthat can control the Commodore wiper motor. This control box can also control a dwell timerthat allows you select a time period that tellsthe wiper when to wiper from 0.5 second up to9 seconds. The new wiper control system comes as acomplete kit that also includes a new wiperswitch. The new wiper switch looks exactly likea Leyland P76 headlight switch. This has theadded feature that the system looks factoryfitted and that there is no added switches tomount. The old wiper switch is simply removedand the headlight switch is placed in the wiperswitch location and all the other componentssimply plugged into place. On the headlightswitch you have a low speed and high speedas well as a dwell timer for intermittentcontrol, and even a wash button. Allcomponents are easy to install and arevirtually wiring free.If you decide to remove the original wiringfrom the car than it will take you about anhour to fit the whole system. The kit includesone wiper motor and bracket, a new wiperswitch, a control box and harness to connectthe whole thing together. If anyone has anyquestions you can call me after 5pm Mondayto Friday.Article re-printed from The Queensland Bulletin, July 2003. Thanks to Garth for passing it on.

Parts & Pees, Tricks & Tips #5By Philip McCumiskyHi everybody, trust you and your P76’s are running in overdrive and have been well serviced. We have had a low mileage P76 donated to the club by an anonymous donor. The car was a six cylinder Superauto model, but it’s now a V8 column auto. The car was equipped with LPG, air and power steering. The donor has had the more desired items removed and placed on another P76 he owns for his own comfortnow that he has that car on the road as his personal transport. On behalf of the committee and club members, I would like to thank the donor very much for his kind gift tothe club. The committee will now decide in which way we use this donation for the benefit of all members,Since the last journal, we have found a local manufacturer of Leyland thermostats, radiator caps, locking andnon-locking petrol caps and gaskets to suit the thermostat housings. The radiator caps come in two models, recovery and non-recovery.This firm also manufacture the above products for all makes of cars as well, so if you need anything in this linefor any of your other vehicles, then please use this local manufacturer for your needs in this area. You will alsoremember that we mentioned we were investigating the availability of fuel splash trays and rear stone guards. They are being assessed by the manufacturer and details will be made available shortly as to their identity andpricing and other details of interest to club members. The newly available petrol locking caps as mentioned above will suit the new splash trays. I already have onesuch unit fitted to one of my P76’s, together with a pilot splash try.I had a call from member Ray Connor who wanted some help in buying gaskets to suit his V8, which hesuspects has a blown head gasket, but he did not want to undertake the job prior to having the required partson hand. Sensible approach, as he had contacted his local Bursons store and was informed they could not assisthim. The problem has been fixed and Ray has the necessary part number and contact to order his gasketrequirements. As a further service to members, printed on the last page of this journal is a listing of the part number andmanufacturer’s name of all engine gaskets, both 6 and V8, as well as the Marina 4 cylinder. Members may findthese details handy when they purchase their gasket requirements. This listing was included in Newsletter #33 from the P76 Club of NSW. I thank them for their research in thisarea.ACL, the gasket manufacturing firm based in Qld has gone into receivership. It is hoped that they will be able totrade out of their position. ACL does not do retail; their normal retailer is Repco Limited. I have experiencedthat if you deal through Repco you may not need to give them the part numbers, but it is safe for you to do soas the listing in the parts books will vary from Leyland/P76/Austin.Any parts person under thirty five will not know what you are talking about when you ask for any P76 part, so itpays to go well armed, even they might be able to learn something!!Bursons are normally pretty good for P76 parts, but they do not do “unusual” gasket sales and usually “buy in”for a direct customer order/request. This can add to the price and make the deal a bit sour.I suggest that you photocopy/laminate the enclosed listing of gasket number and keep it in your car file in caseyou need it later on.One of the services that I will always try and provide for all members is exampled with the gasket listing partnumber sheet, you can then laminate all of these that will follow on and keep them for handy reference.Has there ever been any club member who has a repair business in the auto trade advertise in our magazineand make themselves available to assist any club member who wants a service of some kind to theP76/Marina/BMC product? I would have thought that this would have been taken up prior, as it is in other clubswhere a member(s) have a skill and assist other club members in that area. That way everyone should be awinner? If you think this could suit you could you contact me and we can go from there.I am hoping to have available for the concourse event the following new accessories for members to view andorder:1. A set of headlight protectors2. A set of dash trim facia appliqués in the standard P76 timber look3. A spare tyre cover and strap (a la Executive)4. An insect screen designed for the Super grille. (They will also be also be available for the Deluxe).

These are “pilot items” made as one offs to test the general interest in these accessories and from that the clubwill decide in what quantities we will stock them, providing we have firm orders.Back to the previous ACL gasket position, this will be on the agenda at the proposed 2010 Nationals where wewill have a workshop which will be held by all parts/tech officers. Naturally there will be other topics discussedat this workshop in relation to all things parts and technical in order to best be able to assist the P76movement.Well folks, this will do for this issue.
