ContextGreater Montréal and the other 32 major North American metropolitan areasIn this portrait, Greater Montréal is compared with 32 other metropolitan areas in Canada and the United States. In Canada,these are the seven metropolitan areas with the largest populations. The three most populous Canadian urban centres, i.e.Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver, each have over 2 million residents, while the populations of Québec, Edmonton, Calgaryand Ottawa-Gatineau range from 750,000 to 1.2 million residents. In the United States, the areas selected for benchmarkingpurposes are the 26 metropolitan areas with populations exceeding 2 million residents in 2006.Greater Montréal corresponds to the territory of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM). Nevertheless, thedata presented in this Portrait may in some cases apply to the Montréal census metropolitan area (CMA) as defined byStatistics Canada. Those cases will be noted. The territory of the CMM is quite similar, in geographic terms, to that of the CMA. 1The other Canadian areas chosen for benchmarking correspond to the census metropolitan areas (CMAs) as defined byStatistics Canada in 2006. Produced by the CMM, 2010.1 The Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) comprises essentially the same municipalities as the Montréal census metropolitan area (CMA), except thatthe CMM does not include the municipalities of Gore, Saint-Colomban, Saint-Jerome, Saint-Placide, L’Épiphanie (Parish), L’Épiphanie (Town) and Lavaltrie on the NorthShore, and Saint-Zotique, des Coteaux and Coteau-du-Lac on the South Shore, and, unlike the CMA, the CMM includes the municipalities of Contrecoeur, Calixa-Lavallée and Saint-Jean-Baptiste, on the South Shore. In 2009, according to the Institut de la statistique du Québec, the total population of the CMM was 3,684,000,whereas that of the CMA was 3,815,000.
Greater Montréal: five geographic sectors, 82 municipalitiesGreater Montréal consists of 82 municipalities in five geographic sectors, i.e. the Montréal agglomeration, the Longueuilagglomeration, Laval, the North Shore and the South Shore.The 82 municipalities that make up Greater Montréal are also part of regional county municipalities (RCMs). The areaincludes all or part of 14 RCMs or equivalent territories. On the North Shore, there are the Les Moulins and Thérèse-DeBlainville RCMs, the territory of Mirabel equivalent to an RCM and part of the L’Assomption and Deux-Montagnes RCMs.On the South Shore, there are the Marguerite-D’Youville and Roussillon RCMs and part of those of Beauharnois-Salaberry,Vallée-du-Richelieu, Vaudreuil-Soulanges and Rouville.
