article in Stavanger Aftenblad on August 20. The topicwas the common habit of posting pictures of your childon social networking sites, such as Facebook. As a parent, you can, of course, make the decision yourself regardingposting pictures of your child. But did you know thatto stay within the law in Norway, you must seek parents’permission if you post a picture that also includes otherchildren, according to Norway’s Datatilsynet? (Datatilsynet= Data Inspectorate) When posting a picture of a childunder 15, permission from the child’s parents should berequested—preferably in advance. In “crowd scenes”—think May 17th or a football match full of spectators—the conventional wisdom is that it is a public event andindividuals realize that when they attend. In those cases, the threshold for permission is higher and not necessary toreceive. But taking pictures of your own child in his or herclassroom along with other classmates is a picture for youto treasure, but not to place on a public social networkingsite without asking permission of the other parents ofchildren in the picture. From my viewpoint, I can promise you that it is not theschool’s role to troll social networking sites looking forinfractions. The important point that I took from theAftenblad article was that parents need to show respectfor each other and for the children—and to keep abreastof the complexity of technology in our daily lives. Andhow should a parent react if a picture appears of their childon a social networking site that they would like removed?According to Datatilsynet, all the parent needs to do istell the other parent to please remove the picture. Onedoesn’t need to have a “good reason” to have the pictureremoved—it’s enough to simply not want it there.Interested in more information about the points I havementioned? Here is the reference for both the article inStavanger Aftenblad and the Datatilsynet website:http://www.aftenbladet.no/lokalt/stavanger/1247444/-_Si_nei_til_Facebook-bilder_du_ikke_liker.htmlhttp://www.datatilsynet.noParenting doesn’t get any easier in today’s complex world, does it? But as there were some things in the article thatI found interesting to be aware of, I pass the informationonto you as being in the category of “Good to Know.”And here is another piece of information from the localnews that is less complex to digest!
