Expert Tips & Tricks10 Tips For Crowdfunding Your BusinessCrowdfunding—raising funds from“crowds” of individuals online via websiteslike Kickstarter and IndieGoGo—hasbeen used to finance thousands of projects, inventions and businesses in the past fewyears. Now, a provision of the recentlyenacted JOBS Act, called the CROWD-FUND Act, will greatly expand entrepreneurs’ability to raise money by crowdfunding. Here are 10 steps to successfulcrowdfunding.1. Consult a professional. TheCROWDFUND Act seeks to lower thecost of raising capital by exempting companiesraising $1 million or less fromregistering their offering with the SEC.But although you are exempt from registration, you’re not exempt from regulation.Always consult with a professionalinvestment consultant or attorney versedin securities law before embarking on anycrowdfunding venture.2. Understand the two types ofcrowdfunding. Previously, crowdfundingsites could be used only to get donations(or pledges). The CROWDFUNDAct expands the options by allowing entrepreneursto solicit investments of upto $1 million annually via crowdfundingwebsites. Unlike donors, these investorsactually own a piece of the company andcan realize a return on their investment ifthe company succeeds.3. Don’t jump the gun. The processfor crowdfunding donations hasn’tchanged, but the SEC regulations regardingcrowdfunding investments and nonaccreditedinvestors won’t be set until January2013. You will be able to crowdfundfrom accredited investors (those whose networth, excluding the value of their primaryresidence, is over $1 million) beginningJuly 4, 2012, but you will have to wait untilafter January 2013 to solicit nonaccreditedinvestors.4. Research your options. Make surethe crowdfunding site you choose meetsthe requirements of the CROWDFUNDAct. Crowdfunding investments must besolicited through sites that are registeredwith the SEC, conduct background checkson companies seeking investments, andscreen investors to confirm that they understandthe risks involved.5. Beware of scams. Interest incrowdfunding is high, and the CROWD-FUND Act is not yet implemented, whichmeans the market is ripe for scam artists.Be very cautious about anyone claimingthey can help you raise capital online fora fee.6. Create a compelling pitch. Ifyou’re crowdfunding donations, yourfund-raising pitch should focus on emotionsand get donors excited about yourbusiness, your product or service andyour entrepreneurial passion. If you’recrowdfunding investments, your approachshould focus on the bottom line and thepotential for investors to make money.7. Offer rewards. For investors, thereward is the profit they make from yourcompany, but for donors, you’ll need tooffer rewards such as product samples, T-shirts or promotional items, or discounts.Develop different rewards for donors dependingon how much they contribute.8. Spread the word using social media, marketing and PR. Don’t limit yoursearch for funds to the people who frequentthe crowdfunding site you choose.Create an integrated marketing campaignthat tells everyone you are looking for financing—andmakes it simple for them totell others.9. Create a video. Make your companystand out from the pack by creatingcompelling pitch videos—one for donorsand one for investors. Post them on yourwebsite, the crowdfunding site and You-Tube—and increase your chances of goingviral.10. Share information. If you crowdfundinvestments, the SEC regulates howyou communicate with investors. Even ifyou crowdfund donations, you’ll want toregularly update donors on how your companyis doing, the progress of your productor service, and any other news that makesthem feel part of your success. The Journal Summer 201212Call 764-2440 • ridgedesign.comI know Camarillo Well...Ray De Silva#1 Selling Agent 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004,2005, 2006 & 2007 - No 1 Listing Agent - Top Volume Agent 2008, 2009When performance and results count, call on a proven consummate professionalto assist you in all your real estate needs.(805) 444-3848www.raydesilva.comray.desilva@troop.com

The Journal Summer 201230Business AdvocacyQ: Tell us a little your business.A: My husband, Michael and Ibought a business in 2002 from a friendwho sold and serviced primarily printersand fax machines and remanufacturedtoner cartridges (Speedy Office Systems). We changed the name to CentralCoast Imaging Solutions, tweaked ourbusiness profile, brought in the Canonline of office equipment and eventuallyexpanded from Santa Barbara County toVentura County. In 2008 we downsizedour staff because of the economy andlegislation; the remaining employees, including ourselves, expanded upontheir expertise to fill in the gaps.Q: How did you get started withyour political advocacy efforts?A: In 2006, when Workman’sCompensation rates were dangerouslyhigh; I had the opportunity to attendThe CalChamber Summit in Sacramento, along with the Regional LegislativeAlliance (now the Chambers ofCommerce Alliance) consortium to talkwith legislatures about business issues.I went along for the ride with no expectations.Q: What is the driving force behindyour high level of involvement?A: During the trip in 2006, wemet with legislatures about business issues, particularly Workman’s Compensationrates. They appeared sincerelyCalChamber Recognizes Oxnardarea Small Business AdvocateThe California Chamber of Commerce recently named Chamber memberSuzanne Scar, owner, Central Coast Imaging Solutions, in Oxnard as one ofonly two recipients of the 2012 Small Business Advocate of the Year Award, recognizing her for outstanding advocacy efforts on behalf of small businesses.Scar’s advocacy on behalf of small businesses in 2011included opposingincreases in minimum wage, paid sick days and paid bereavement leave. She also was involved inthe redistricting of Ventura County’s supervisorial seats and relayed the opposition local farmers hadagainst card check legislation.Honorees are nominated by local chamber of commerce executives. The criteria used in the selectionprocess include taking leadership roles in or working on federal, state or local ballot measures, testifyingbefore the state Legislature and representing a local chamber of commerce before local government. We recently sat down with Scar and found out what motivates her in her advocacy efforts.interested and listened to over 50 businessadvocates and owners talk aboutthe negative impact that the high ratesWorkman’s Compensation had on theirbusiness. I can remember Kathy Leahy,CEO of Goodwill Industries, givethe exact fiscal impact and how it wouldaffect her non-profit company that providedhundreds of jobs in our community. In 2007 a reform was made toWorkman’s Compensation rates whichwere a major relief for businesses inCalifornia. I believe our advocacy effortsmade a difference.Q: Do you have any kind ofbackground in politics?A: My grandfather was theJudge of Athens County, Ohio and mymother was active on many politicalcampaigns…. both served many years.Although I’ve heard many great storiesfrom them, I had not been personally involvedwith politics until 2006.Q: What would you say is themost rewarding part of your advocacyefforts?A: The story above was the mostsignificant. During that trip, I met severalamazing people that helped educateand guide me (and others) through thelegislative process. Ernie Villegas andAssemblyman Keith Richman were twopeople that influenced me the most. Becauseof them and the 2006 trip to Sacramento,I have stayed involved withpolitics on a consistent basis though thelocal Chambers and the Chambers ofCommerce Alliance. In 2011, as Chairmanof the CCA, I went to Sacramento7 times on behalf of Ventura and SantaBarbara County businesses and attendedmany meetings and conference callsregarding business advocacy issues locallyand nationally.Q: Are you ever intimidated bythe people you come in contact withwhile advocating?A: Absolutely in the beginning;but most politicians are very friendlyand appreciate a different perspectivefrom their constituents. Often, they willeven provide you with honest insight onhow to resolve or help with an issue.Q: What advice would you havefor other business persons who wouldlike to be involved with advocacy efforts?A: Get involved with yourChamber of Commerce through theirBusiness Advocacy Committee. TheCamarillo Chamber of Commerce hasone of the best business advocacy committeeswith representatives from governmentavailable to talk about whatis happening locally, statewide and nationally.Even if you know absolutelynothing about politics today, this is agreat venue to participate in and findout what is occurring…. and what youcan do to influence what you care about.

Alliance scores bigwith midterm electionBrendan HuffmanExecutive DirectorElection Night was a good one forthe Chambers of Commerce Alliance asvictories were scored with both endorsedcandidates and statewide ballot propositions.Much to many pundits’ surprise,Prop. 28 passed overwhelmingly and willadjust California’s legislative term limitslaw to permit legislators who have neverbeen elected before to serve up to 12years in either house or a combination ofboth. The Alliance endorsed Prop. 28 inthe hopes that it will create more focus onpolicymaking and less on campaigning. Not to be outdone, the apparent failureof Prop. 29 also turned a lot of heads.Backers of Prop. 29 sought to increasethe state’s tobacco tax by $1/pack to fundmore cancer research. Opponents, includingthe Chamber Alliance, responded thatProp. 29 represents more ballot box budgetingand relieson sin taxes to sustainitself, whichhave proven to beunreliable. As for candidates, the Chamber Alliancehad endorsed Congressional candidatesTony Strickland and Abel Maldonado, both of whom will advance to theNov. 6 ballot. Strickland will face AssemblywomanJulia Brownley, and Maldonadois challenging Rep. Lois Capps.Following the election, the ChamberAlliance endorsed Jeff Gorrell whois seeking a second term in the State Assembly. The Alliance also endorsed MikeStoker who finished well ahead of secondplace finisher Hannah-Beth Jackson. Both candidates will be on the Nov. 6 ballot.Rep. Buck McKeon, who is seekingreelection in his newly drawn district thatBusiness Advocacynow includes Simi Valley, was endorsedby the Alliance too.In other races, the Chamber Allianceis planning a candidate forum for AD 38candidates Edward Headington and ScottWilk as well as SD 27 candidates FranPavley and Todd Zink. Hopefully, thisforum will occur in Simi Valley in September.Brendan Huffman is the ExecutiveDirector for the Chambers of CommerceAlliance. For more information aboutthe Chamber Alliance, please visit www.ChamberAlliance.bizTips to Help You Communicatewith Your LegislatorThe following tips will help you communicatewith your legislators with ease.• Arrive on time. Legislators’ time isvery limited, especially at the statelevel.• Do not be intimidated. These legislatorsare in the business of representingthe public’s interest. They need tolearn more about your business andthe people who work for you.• Know your legislators. If you don’talready know your representatives, make it your business to get acquainted. You should know about issues thatare important to them. Do you livein their district? Does your companyhave a facility there? What are theircommittee assignments? What positionhave they taken on your issue inthe past?• Be a resource. Legislators are expectedto be experts on every issue. However, they rely on you, their audience, toprovide that information. Be preparedto answer questions regarding key issues.Your credibility will increase ifyou provide useful answers.• Show your expertise. Yes, the legislatorwill want to know all about an issuefrom you. That is because you arethe expert on your business, your issueand how it affects the legislator. Legislatorswant to do what’s best for theirconstituents.• Avoid false promises. If you don’tknow the answer, make sure to asksomeone who does. Nothing is worsethan providing inaccurate information.Let them know you will follow upwith their inquiry and do it ASAP. Thequick response will get their attentionand gain their respect. However, falsepromises could really ruin your reputationand credibility.• Listen, and always say “Thank you.”Listen to what the legislator has to say, even if you don’t agree with what heor she is saying. You can state factsto back your stance, but don’t argue.Thank the legislator for taking thetime to talk to you. Someone will befollowing up with a thank you notefor his or her attendance; however, ifyou spent a fair amount of time with alegislator, it would be more personal ifyou signed that letter or sent your own.• Addressing a legislator. Always addressthe legislator formally as “AssemblyMember ________ ” (Representativeor Delegate in some states)or “Senator ________.” If you knowthe legislator’s leadership position, bemore specific, as in “Majority Leader______, what a pleasure to see you.”• Keep it brief. The legislator is attendingyour function to meet and greetyour organization’s employees and/ormembers.• Be energetic. A good attitude and enthusiasmabout your business issueswill reflect in the legislator’s approachto you. Communication is predominatelynon-verbal, so a good smile andbody language will leave a resoundingimpression on the legislator. The Journal Summer 201231
