Expedition – the base
Dear Readers,
2006 was a good year for us, in particular as a
result of your loyalty and your confidence in our
services. In 2007 we have continued to put every
effort into justifying this confidence. For example,
we have invested in synergies on our transport
routes in order to be able to offer you even better
logistical solutions. Furthermore, we have intensified
our activities in the field of ABRAService in
order to provide our customers with the advantages
of high-strength and wear-resistant steels
and opportunities for in-depth processing.
Moreover we have extended our “... nature of steel”
by the field of quality and highgrade construction
steels. As a result of the strategically important
acquisition of the traditional company Hoselmann
Stahl, Handel und Anarbeitung in Hanover we are
now able to offer you a wide variety of special
construction steels. Since August 2006 Hoselmann
has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Stappert
Group, although it will continue to trade under its
own name.
Expedition – the base
Stappert and Hoselmann to
join forces
EXPEDITION: Mr Kolz, at the end
of the negotiations on the start of a
joint future between Stappert and
Hoselmann it only remained for the
signatures to be applied to the
document – the end of a troublefree
purchase?
Peter Kolz: The complete takeover
of Hoselmann Stahl GmbH by
Stappert Spezial-Stahl Handel
GmbH did indeed go off very harmoniously,
as the traditional company
fits exceptionally well into
our corporate philosophy with its
products, services and – last but
not least – the people who work
here. Two suppliers of special
steels have joined forces here in a
meaningful way. Hoselmann Stahl
GmbH is well-known among industry
experts – and has been for
generations, as the Hanoverians
Almost 80 years' experience, around 60 employees and a turnover of more than €60 million.
Hoselmann Stahl GmbH, Handel und Anarbeitung, Hanover's traditional and profitable company,
becomes a wholly-owned Stappert subsidiary. EXPEDITION spoke to Peter Kolz, one of the two
Managing Directors, in conjunction with the formal contract-signing ceremony in Frankfurt am
Main.
have been trading successfully for
around eight decades on the European
market for quality and highgrade
construction steels, as well
as high-temperature steels.
EXPEDITION: Was the product
range the decisive argument for
the acquisition of Hoselmann?
Peter Kolz: It was a significant
factor in our decision, but there
were many arguments, not only
the fact that the two medium-sized
companies have been working together
for several years: Hoselmann
has always been a good customer
of Stappert and the two companies
have served the same customers
in many cases with different
products. From the product portfolio,
through the distribution of
their various sites to the highly
motivated another perfectly. In
addition, we have comparable corporate
structures. With this takeover
we are not only gaining access
to a new market, but are creating
the opportunity for both special
suppliers to react even more flexibly
to customer requirements in
the future with an expanded product
range. And there will also be
considerable synergies within the
IMS Group. With its 60 employees
Hoselmann will continue to concentrate
on the European market
for quality and high-grade construction
steels and high-temperature
steels and expand its good
customer contacts through the
IMS Organisation in Southern and
Eastern Europe – while Stappert
with its subsidiaries and around
685 employees throughout Europe
will press ahead with their range of
EXPEDITION: What effects will
the new contract have on the
Peter Kolz: Hoselmann will remain
an autonomous company, also in
terms of location. Of course the two
warehouse and pre-processing
sites in Hanover with their approximately
12,000 square metres of
Peter Kolz: As a specialist for
Hoselmann will – as all subsidiaries
of Stappert – continue to act autonomously,
will remain legally independent
fellow Managing Director Michael
Duckwitz and I are jointly responsible
for this. Gunter Frühling, who
together with Mr Duckwitz was a
long-serving managing partner at
the age of 69 at his own request.
Growth
“made in Austria”
The Stappert subsidiary Fleischmann in Austria is one of the leading high-grade steel traders in
the country. Moreover, the company supplies large quantities of its steel products to Eastern
Europe. At least two good reasons to present the company to you once again in more detail here.
45 tonnes of steel are moved every day at Fleischmann
– by 14 male and female employees in two shifts. These
form part of the total staff of 50 at the newly set up
company headquarter in the Lower Austrian town of
Teesdorf. Together with their five colleagues working in
the sales office in Haid they are also pleased with the
successful track record of the company: In the meantime
the total quantity of goods handled has risen to
around 9,000 tonnes a year. These are supplied by
Fleischmann not only to the domestic market of Austria,
but also to Croatia and Slovenia, as well as the affiliate
companies in Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Broad stock programme
As a full-service provider, Fleischmann provides a
complete range of products. In the new, modern warehouse
in Teesdorf the company keeps stocks not only
of stainless steels, but also heat-resistant and highly
corrosion-resistant steels. Thanks to its three powerful
Peter Kolz is looking forward to a
successful joint future ...
friendship with and interest in the
company. Both Stappert and Hoselmann
are looking forward to the
collaboration of the two businesses
and the cooperation of the people
working there. For it was not least
the personal and human component
... with Michael Duckwitz and the
Hoselmann-Team.
saws and its direct access to a grinding centre the
company is able to offer standard ground steels and
many types of special productions. The product range
is complemented by the new field of ABRAService,
which expands the existing stock programme by highstrength
and wear-resistant materials.
Feeling of responsibility
that played a central role in the two
successful companies coming
together and forming an excellent
basis for their joint success.
EXPEDITION: Thank you very
much Mr Kolz for this interview.
Established in 1947 as Fleischmann-Stahlhandel GmbH,
the company has now been working successfully in
the steel business for almost 60 years. In 1987 it became
part of the international IMS Holding and is therefore
able to profit from a network of 19 companies
in 14 European countries. All aspects of quality take
top priority: the company sets itself the objective of
manufacturing top products and providing perfect
customer service – to guarantee continuing success
in the future!

Worldwide contacts
In 2006 exhibitors and visitors from home and abroad again travelled to the TUBE trade fair in
Düsseldorf. The leading trade fair for the tube and tube-processing industry opens its doors to
the exhibition halls every two years. Once again Stappert took advantage of the world's largest
industry forum to present itself and its products.
With 28,600 guests it was not only the TUBE trade fair
itself that boasted an increase in the number of visitors
by 7.5% in comparison to the last fair: the Stappert
stand was also a “hive of activity”, with a large number
of highly interested industry specialists catching up on
the Stappert product range, services, export opportunities
and the network of the IMS Group from April 24-
28, 2006. Visitors to the stand came from various industries,
such as commerce, mechanical engineering,
the pharmaceutical industry and many more.
Visitors from 40 countries
The high ratio of international visitors to the Tube trade
fair is also reflected in the visitors to the Stappert
stand, with the customer advisers welcoming trade fair
guests from a total of 40 different countries, including
Booming country,
booming trade fair
As an up-and-coming Chinese metropolis
with approximately 20 million
inhabitants, Shanghai presents
itself to the visitor as a city of great
contrasts – with its modern “face”
with the skyline and Transrapid on
the one hand, and the “traditions” in
the historic city centre on the other.
Compared to the first trade fair in
China, South Africa and New Zealand. Besides visitors
from Germany, the largest number of guests came
from Turkey, Spain and India. As well as holding concrete
discussions with the Stappert team, visitors were
able to establish contacts with the employees of the
Stappert subsidiaries – who were also invited together
with their customers – at the stand party, which was
held for the first time this year. This was an ideal forum
for maintaining existing business relationships and
forming new ones. Also the offer to visit the new stainless
steel warehouse in Bönen was gratefully accepted
by the customers and met with a high level of approval,
as did the entire Stappert trade fair presentation. It
goes without saying that Stappert will again be welcoming
their customers again to the “,,... nature of steel”
at TUBE 2008.
Although wire & Tube China 2006 was only held for the second time, it has already developed
into a leading industrial trade fair for the whole of Asia. And so two members of the Stappert
Spezial-Stahl Handel export department again travelled to the effervescent city of Shanghai in
2006 to present the “... nature of steel” there from September 25-28.
2004, the exhibition space at the
Shanghai New International Expo
Center was increased by 14,000 m2 in order to provide room for a total
of 923 exhibitors from 32 countries.
At their stand the members of the
export department welcomed numerous
international visitors, many
of whom were not yet acquainted
with the special materials produced
by Stappert, which the Stappert
employees were pleased to provide
detailed information on. Even
greater interest – particularly among
potential new customers – was
generated by the exhibits of various
designs and descriptions that were
presented at the stand.
Reschke Schweißtechnik GmbH – a portrait
6
Expedition – the companions
When the sparks
fly at night
“... nothing is impossible” is the relatively new slogan of this unusual company from the Main
Valley near Frankfurt, which has developed from a small metalworking shop into a renowned
brand in the construction machine industry. Managing Director Silvia Reschke puts it in a nut-
shell, “We make whatever the others don't dare to attempt”.
The individuality of the products takes top priority at
Reschke. Around 5,000 excavator buckets, scoops
and special components for earthmoving equipment
were produced by Reschke last year. Whether these
are all-purpose backhoes or light material buckets,
demolition or side dump buckets, excavator sticks or
root crop blades – the products always have to be
tailor-made to the specific requirements of the customer.
“We often create solutions that are actually
worthy of a patent,” says Silvia Reschke when describing
the services provided by her staff of 50. This also
includes a fair share of the corporate philosophy, because
here it is not mass-produced articles that are
required, but that special out-of-the-ordinary item.
And a significant role in this is played by chief designer
Uwe Rehor, who has worked for Reschke since 1994.
It is his task to think of something new time and again
in order to be able to offer customers the ideal technical
solution for their specific requirements. He then
compiles the engineering drawing, which is the master
design for production of the specially-manufactured
buckets, scoops or accessories. “Of course these are
often only small changes that have to be made to the
standard product. But sometimes it is also a bit more
tricky, with the result that in the past few years we have
created a few unique items,” explains Uwe Rehor.
Over 20 years' experience
The construction of excavator buckets has a tradition
going back more than 20 years at Reschke. As long
ago as the early 1980s the founder of the company,
Bernd Reschke, tried his hand at producing these
heavy components. While welding work was only
contracted out by Reschke in 1981, just two years
later the first buckets were produced under the com-
pany's own brand name. The customer was the
Zeppelin trading company, which still remains one of
the largest customers of Reschke GmbH today. In
1990 a new age dawned not only for Germany, but
also for Reschke. The company was reorganised, the
production area doubled in size, new machines purchased,
additional employees recruited and the twoshift
system introduced. In 1991 the production of
scoops was begun in addition to the buckets. The
demand for Reschke's quality products was so great
that in 1993 a co-operation was started with the firm
LRT GmbH in Tharandt near Dresden in order to take
advantage of higher production capacities. The company
from Saxony has many years' experience of locomotive
construction and was soon able to adapt to the
requirements of the construction machine industry.
Welding at night
At peak periods production at Reschke goes on roundthe-clock.
And in consideration of the neighbours any
hammering that is required is carried out during the
day, and the welding at night. Thanks to this system it
has been possible in the past to carry out many “special
orders” to the full satisfaction of the customers –
whether this involved 80 excavator buckets within 3
weeks or the production of a standard bucket according
to customer specifications, including an adapter
plate and hydraulic device, within 24 hours. Of course
it is important in such cases for Reschke's suppliers
to play their part. An example of this the ABRAService
of Stappert, which guarantees the reliable supply of
wear-resistant and high-strength steels – no matter
how short the notice.
Large components for big
All of Reschke's customers are dealers who sell Reschke
products to renowned manufacturers of earthmoving
equipment: from Volvo to Mitsubishi, from
Caterpillar to Komatsu, from Liebherr to Hitachi. They
all trust the high quality and individuality of Reschke
products. And the larger the machine for which a
Reschke component is required, the more Reschke's
designers enjoy their work. “It really becomes great fun
with machines weighing 20 tonnes and up,” explains
Uwe Rehor, who within the framework of design and
production planning is happy to resort to the in-depth
production opportunities offered by the ABRAService.
Training Instead of Job Cuts
Silvia Reschke also uses unusual methods in the
organisation of her own company. While others “outsource”,
she puts her faith in the strength of the company's
own employees. Education and training are a
major priority in order to attract high-quality
employees or further the skills of the existing ones.
Many have been working for the company for more
than 10 years. “We have a healthy mixture of experienced
and young employees, which in my opinion is
the key to success,” says Silvia Reschke. We are currently
searching for additional qualified employees in
order to strengthen our design and production departments.
Expedition – the companions
Plans and visions
Business is booming both at home and abroad. Today
approximately 30% of the goods produced at the works
in Hesse are sent all over the world. Russia in particular
promises a high growth potential in the future. For this
reason it has already been decided to continue expansion
of the production areas in 2008. “After that I would
like to set up a kind of research and development department
which cooperates with the technical universities
and which can therefore offer our customers
genuine innovations,” Silvia Reschke goes on, explaining
her vision for the future. And anyone who sees
how the eyes of this dynamic Managing Director light
up as she says it does not doubt for one second that
she will achieve her ambitious target.
“Now speak Swabian to me!”
That good salesmen have to be capable of more than simply knowing their goods like the back
of their hand becomes apparent almost every day at the Stappert sales office in Ulm. Anyone
wishing to successfully sell their products here has to do the same as Martin Luther and “speak
to the people in their own language” ...
“Hend-Se nedd noh äbbes anderschts?”
Anyone born in Swabia
will immediately answer this question
with “Of course we have
course. Anyone who has moved to
the region, however, breaks out in
a sweat when confronted with the
local dialect. Especially if he or
she moved here just two years
And so sales office manager
Marko Müller had to capitulate
when a customer insisted that he
World Cup Party
At last! After 32 years another soccer World Cup in Germany! For the team from the sales office
in Niederaula this was a good reason to obtain the television transmission rights. And to invite all
the customers to watch the opening game of the German team live during a barbecue.
More than 25 soccer fans accepted
the invitation to visit the Stappert
company premises in Niederaula
in order to cheer on Klinsmann &
Co. on the big screen. The atmosphere
in the marquee erected
specifically for the occasion was
almost as high-spirited as in the
stadium in Munich, and the weather
also finally decided to cooperate.
The FIFA World Cup of 2006 was
just six min-utes old when its first
memorable moment occurred:
Philipp Lahm made it 1-0 to
Germany. It was just a whisker
away from being the fastest goal
customers who need stainless steel
in any form are well looked after.
Diversified Clientele
The diversified clientele requires
that the salesmen and women have
of all time in the opening game of
a World Cup, but even so it was
still worth seeing how Lahm outdribbled
two Costa Rican defenders
before mov-ing in from the left and
smashing the ball into the corner
of the net with his stronger right
foot. That was the signal for the
party to begin: the celebrations
were deafening when the German
team took the lead so early! Even
the equaliser just a few minutes
later was not able to dampen the
spirits of the Stappert customers
and employees, who continued to
watch the rest of the game with a
The sales team in Ulm: Mrs Simon,
Mrs Schurr and Mr Müller (top,
profound technical knowledge
of the entire range of well over
15,000 stored articles consisting
of 46 different materials, as
well as the ability to adjust to
regional differences – whether
this is a “chat-tering Swabian”
or the “Bavarian placidness”.
This works so well that every
year large quantities of highgrade
steel find their way from
the sales team in Ulm to the
customer. And this team can
rightly claim, “We offer our
clientele a lot ... but not standard
German!”
good deal of interest and excitement.
Refreshment from the
grill
After an overall satisfactory first
half and a deserved 2-1 lead the
fans also took a well-deserved
break. Stappert sales manager
Dirk Fälber was well prepared with
his fellow hosts and provided juicy
steaks, delicious sausages and
other culinary delights from the
charcoal grill for anyone that was
hungry. These were accompa-nied
by draught beer and other refreshing
drinks. After being reinvigorated
in this way everyone was ready for
the next 45 minutes and awaited the
whistle of the Argentinian referee
with great anticipation.
Goal wall shooting
and football songs
The real fans showed their “true
colours” by means of various symbols
or fan ar-ticles and formed a
“12th man” for their team. Their
enthusiasm paid off: at 7:45 p.m.
everyone breathed a sigh of relief:
Germany had won 4-2 and had
passed the first test. After the final
whistle the party went on unabated.
Some of those present had a go at
football wall shooting, while others
chatted about how good the game
had been. Towards the end of the
day the latest World Cup songs
were belted out at the top of their
voices.
Time flew by and it was the small
hours before a shuttle service took
the guests back to their hotel. This
party had shown that even in the
“... nature of steel” there is still
room for a good old-fashioned
football party!
Whether for construction machines, the chemical industry or coking plants: CREUSABRO ® is
suitable for a broad spectrum of applications. No wonder, as the steel with the “soft” hardness
is very flexible.
Meanwhile Stappert ABRAService has had the exclusive
distribution rights to the materials CREUSABRO ®
4800 and 8000 . At the same time they process them
directly into the finished product and keep a large
selection in stock in order to meet the many enquiries
for this attractive material, as with its special properties
CREUSABRO ® is one of the best highly wearresistant
materials up to a hardness of 540 HB. For
example, due to its oil tempering it has a very homogeneous
structure, thus enabling good mechanical
processing. Moreover, it can be easily welded by
means of several different processes. A further advantage
is the fact that CREUSABRO ® can be shaped at
CREUSABRO ® : The ideal solution for a high degree of wear resistance and good processability
temperatures of approximately 900°C without changing
its initial anti-abrasive characteristics.
Temperature-resistant
Due to its favourable properties the fields of application
for CREUSABRO ® are very varied. As it has been
shown to have a longer service life than comparable
water-quenched steels with the same degree of hardness,
its uses range from wear strips in the construction
machine industry and cover a broad spectrum
that includes entire screens for the chemical industry.
For example, increasing numbers of enquiries are
received for excavator lips, blades, cutting edges,
screw conveyors, blow bars for impact mills, troughs,
chutes and mixer linings as ready-to-install parts.
CREUSABRO ® is also the right choice in areas in which
temperature resistance plays a decisive role. As it can
be used for temperatures up to 500°C, it is frequently
used by coking plants and steelworks for lining quenching
cars or for ash grids. And anyone looking for
wearresistant pipes, pipe bends, funnels, dust pipes
and drums will find the right CREUSABRO ® product in
the broad ABRAService stock programme. Our employees
will be pleased to help you select the right
product and provide detailed answers to your questions
concerning the possible applications or processing of
CREUSABRO ® . Why not take advantage of our experience
for your projects!

Stappert Spezial-Stahl Handel was
a forerunner in the storage of special
profiles in the qualities 1.4301
and 1.4571. These included U and
T profiles, IPE and IPB sections
and special equal and unequal leg
angles. Initially these profiles were
produced in extruded versions. In
the meantime the production process
has changed. Today they are
mainly rolled or laser-welded and
mostly adapted to DIN norms.
Laser-welded profiles also have a
reduced weight in comparison to
Currently Stappert warehouses
stock profiles in the qualities
1.4301, 1.4404 and 1.4571 – all of
them mainly in production lengths
of 6 metres, although fixed lengths
are also supplied on request.
Drawing profiles in
special materials
In addition to the standard profiles
held in stock, Stappert also supplies
drawing profiles according to
Perfection
customer requirements. The range
comprises not only standard materials,
but also special items such as
heat or corrosion-resistant steels.
This applies to small quantities or
lengths greater than 6 metres. The
delivery programme for profiles,
e.g. sections, is supplemented by
welded connections of high-grade
steel with steel qualities which in
certain applications offer inexpensive
alternatives. For anyone
interested in such supplies the
throughout Germany.
