6 – WESTMOUNT INDEPENDENT – February 21-22, 2012Letters to the EditorCompensate businessesfor power shut-downsOver the past year, I have witnessedconstruction crews on no less than threeoccasions rupture a gas line while executingroad repairs. Each time the fire departmentand Gaz Met repeat the sameprocedure to repair the rupture, and eachtime those close to the site are evacuated –with the exception being that during thislast incident, power to 6,000 subscriberswas cut for safety. It seems this situation is recurring atsuch a frequency that the controls put inplace to prevent such incidents are clearlynot working. Likewise, the cost of lost revenueto businesses, and in this case HydroWestmount, as well as the inconvenienceseem to not be an issue to the contractorsexecuting the work. What is being done to assure that thefrequency of these occurrences is reducedto close to zero? And, I certainly hope thatfines are levied against these contractorsfor amounts representative of the loss ofrevenue to Hydro Westmount, as well as apenalty for the inconvenience to local businessesand the public. This has to stop, before someone getsseriously injured.Ryk Edelstein, Upper LansdowneWeeklyPresstime: Monday at 10:30 amPublisher & editor-in-chief: David Priceeditor: Kristin McNeillChief reporter: Laureen SweeneyWESTMOUNTINDEPENDENTLetters & Comments:We welcome your letters but reserve the right tochoose and edit them. BarryOn March 16 during the first lecture ofthe Westmount Historical Association’s(WHA) spring 2012 series, Michael Leduc, the author of seven books on the historyof railways in Montreal, talked about CanadianPacific’s (CP) involvement in the developmentof the former Glen Yards.Although Leduc never worked for a railway, the Dollard des Ormeaux resident hashad a lifelong interest in trains, especiallyin the Montreal region. With a hobbyist’s curiosity, he was ableto trace the construction of the historicstone arch that spans the Glen back to1892, when CP had no track leading fromwestern Montreal, and the Glen had to becrossed in order to build a service yard inWestmount.According to Leduc, the opening of theyard became a necessity when CP nolonger had enough room at Windsor Stationfor its locomotive and rolling stockmaintenance operations. So in 1903, CP president Sir ThomasShaughnessy decided that a new facilitywould be built somewhere between WindsorStation and Montreal West. The followingyear, he announced it would belocated in what wasthen the town of Westmount. While it’s hard toimagine the Glenwithout the great archthat appears in photographstaken morethan a century ago,WHA presidentDoreen Lindsay saidshe has seen picturestaken of women in theGlen before the arrivalof the railway, whenthe area was regardedas an idyllic retreat. When Glen Rd.was built around thesame time as the archway, the stream thatran downhill towardsSt. Henri was buriedunder the street andincorporated into themunicipal sewer network.Leduc said theGlen Yards itself was built on top of an artificialplateau, which was created with anykind of landfill CP was able to obtain. “ItAccording to railway historian Michael Leduc, the Glen Yards became anecessity when CP no longer had enough room to service its trains atWindsor Station.wasn’t always there as a plateau – it’s landfillbasically – and they did all of that intwo years,” he said, adding that by May1906 the new railway yard was ready.free *framesWide selection in all styles! The Free Frames event is a great gift!HELPFUL TIPS FROMINSURANCEWe aren’t the insurance company, We are your broker. When the lights went out in WestmountLiving inWestmountJo SimonettiI pulled hard on the door handle, butthere was no give. I have trouble withdoors, always pushing when I should bepulling and vice versa. I end up in a Chaplin-esquestruggle with the thing untilsomeone with healthier door instinctscomes along to open it with seemingly noeffort whatsoever. This was the second time in a week thatI was denied entry to Sunsource. The firsttime was due to a “back in 5 minutes”sign. (I only had about 90 seconds.) So intensifiedby repeated frustration was mycraving for sea salt and lemon almondsthat I felt sure I could not go on living unlessI procured a bag of the stuff immediately.I tried again.Veneer of civilityMy slapstick routine was in full swingwhen someone stopped to tell me thatWestmount Hydro had cut the power becauseof a gas leak and that many shopshad battened down the hatches, presumablyto preserve the thin veneer of civilitythat kept locals from devolving into rabidlooters and loading up getaway RangeRovers with kale salad, non-fat lattes andUggs. But hang on a minute: Gas leak?Where? The answer was delivered soon enoughvia iPhone. The city of Westmountemailed residents with regular updates onthe situation. I was impressed at the levelof communication and efforts to keep usin the loop.Later, driving east along Sherbrooke topick up my son from school, I was struckby how quickly things degenerate whenthere is a breakdown in infrastructure. With the traffic lights out between Lansdowneand Atwater, motorists suddenlyfound themselves in an awkward dancewith nobody leading. I spotted a few carsstranded along the road, airbags detonatedand fenders bended, and could only hopethat nobody was injured.Sherbrooke St. looked like a scene fromone of those apocalypse movies, where thefirst signs of The End begin to manifestand things start to go terribly wrong. Idrove at 20 kilometres per hour the wholeway and kept my fingers crossed that thelights would be burning again on the wayhome. Only some were, but the intersectionsthat remained dark were now underthe direction of police.Vehicles fell back into the familiar stepsof their start-stop road tango, not unlikemy push-pull door merengue, except theywere actually getting somewhere.By the time power was restored laterthat evening, my yearning for sea salt andlemon almonds had subsided somewhat, but I decided that I would try the door atSunsource again the next day anyway.Third time’s the charm.Send comments and questions tosimonettijo@gmail.com.Electrical fire on poleA small electrical fire was reported tohave broken out at the top of a hydro polebehind 80 Columbia February 8, PublicSecurity officials said. CRescent 54321, for example,or HUnter (respectively 27, the St.Dominique exchange, and 48 for Monkland). That was then. Telephone calls wererouted through exchanges that had namesto houses, and some of those had names, too. The English excel at giving odd namesto their houses, ranging from “Wits End”to “Far Corfe,” and this inventiveness isnot limited to the British. While enjoyinga weekend getaway in the country here inQuebec, I often walk past a home thatbears the name of its owner, apparently aman named G. Finnie. It was years beforeJust enjoyingsunny dayConvertibles aren’t simply for warmweather, as far as one driver is concerned. But it fooled public safety officersFebruary 11 when they spotted aCabriolet with the top down outside 434Prince Albert in wind-chill temperaturesof minus 22˚ C.Suspecting the car may have beenbroken into, and seeing books from theWestmount Public Library in plain view, they managed to track down a familymember of the owner who said she wasn’tsurprised the roof was down on asunny day.The driver of the car, shoppingnearby, subsequently reported all was inorder but stated he would not leave cityproperty (i.e. the books) unsecured inthe future, Public Security officials said.I realized that it should be read in French, and is a joke: “j’ai fini.” There must bemany in Westmount who could nametheir house “Costaplenty.”The telephone exchanges were locatedin real places, so the numbers related toactual words. With the proliferation of newthree-digit prefixes that do not relate toreal places, the romance of names has virtuallydisappeared. My own cellular phone prefix is 241,which is a new prefix that has nothing todo with a physical exchange. Sadly, someof the newer prefixes use the numbers 1and zero, which don’t have letters assignedto them, and those people are locked intoa nameless cell. For myself, I shall make believe that 24stands for BHarat, as I often have conversationswith well-meaning individuals atcall centres in India. Those with 98 prefixescan pretend it stands for ZUppa Inglese(yum yum). 59 could be LYric. There are still desirable, memorablenumbers doled out only to a favoured few.Any number ending in 100, for example,is much sought after. When my wife firstacquired a cellular telephone, the salesmanoffered her such a number. He did soin a conspiratorial way, indicating that hewas giving her something very special, asindeed he was. Businesses need to havenumbers that people can remember easily, such as those that contain repeated digitslike 8585 or the magicalseven-eleven-eleven.There are also numbers you don’t want. For example, you would not want to own867.5309, since that number was used in a“pop” song (do I still have to put the word“pop” in quotes? Has the word itself becomeobsolete? Do I know what “rhetorical”means?)You also wouldn’t want a number thatwas very close to that of a popular hairsalon, plumber or worse. Or perhaps, ifyou live alone, you would.George Bowser is a former Westmountcity councillor and a musician.Woman found safeand soundUrgences Santé called public safety officersto help them gain entry to a Westmounthouse February 12 whenout-of-town relatives of an elderly disabledwoman feared for her safety. BarryBen Baer says that many parents whosend their developmentally challengedchildren to Yaldei tell him it’s “the bestkept secret in town.”“We’re working with developmental delays,genetically-based development issues, and we’re working with childrenwho are profoundly challenged, all the wayto the gifted,” Baer, the director of clinicalservices at Yaldei, said in an interview withthe Independent.Located on the fifth floor of the QueenElizabeth Health Complex on MarloweAve. in NDG, Yaldei is a private, not-forprofitintervention centre, that offers a forpaymentservice to parents who need helpgetting their kids to blossom to their fullpotential.Yaldei claims to have the most intensiveearly intervention program in Quebec interms of the number of hours per week ofone-to-one services for zero- to 6-year-olds.Based on the belief that children withdifferent developmental delays need differenttherapies, the centre offers morethan a dozen different interventions. Theproblems faced by children who go toYaldei include autism, Down syndrome,ADHD, Rett syndrome, cerebral palsy, global development delay and others.“It doesn’t matter what the diagnosis is– early intervention is the key for childrenwith any developmental issues,” saidWestmount resident Eliza Parkinson, whose 10-year-old daughter, Norah, beganattending Yaldei at 18 months after beingassessed as having a global developmentaldelay.Parkinson agreed that beginning treatmentfrom a very early age “makes such ahuge difference.”At a time when many parents of childrenwith developmental problems facelengthy waits for service at provinciallymandatedrehabilitation centres, Yaldeiprides itself on having no waiting list.“We can give a parent an appointmentfor a consultation almost right away withina few weeks,” said Lillian Vennor, Yaldei’sdirector of development. “From that firstmeeting they can start treatment within amonth. It’s very rare you’ll find that inMontreal.”“We have a pretty large staff,” said Baer, explaining one of the reasons Yaldei’s waitinglist is short. “It’s a costly operation becauseof the number of staff, but it allowsus to provide a comprehensive and intensiveprogram.”Founded in 1997 by the parents of twodevelopmentally delayed children, Yaldeiwas created partly because of frustrationwith the lack of services in Montreal forkids with developmental problems. Fromthat beginning, the founders were also determinedto help others. From left, Eliza Parkinson, her daughter Norah, son Jonah, and their dad Jack Buksbaum.
