Primarily the visitingscholarships are intended to initiate an interest inradiological subspecialisation.Since its establishment the programme has triggeredenormous interest among young radiologists from allover the world, thus building an ever growing internationalcommunity.Every year, the number of applications is increasing,which confirms the need for offering more grants andmore volunteer training centres. Ever since its inception,the programme is realised with the support of Bracco.ESR has additionally invested generously to meet theever-growing needs. Since last year the programmeexpanded to cover also ESR corresponding members.During 2011 30 scholarships will be available on differenttopics and will be materialised in pre-selected academictraining reference centres in Europe.On top of this, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering CancerCentre and the Case Western Reserve University areenriching the programme by offering scholarships inUSA, while a new scholarship programme in partnershipwith the Jo Li Trust will provide Chinese radiologists withexposure to advanced techniques, imaging protocols andpractices in UK.Starting in 2011 ESOR will incorporate visitingscholarships provided by European national societies,starting with one such scholarship raised by the SpanishFoundation of Radiology.In each programme scholars receive a three-monthstructured introduction to the chosen topic and follow atailored programme led by an assigned tutor. Each traineeis provided with a grant to cover travel, accommodationand subsistence costs.Altogether it is the best academic and personal experienceI have ever had”, quoted recently a scholar. During three months oftraining the scholars will be provided with a structured,modular introduction to different subspecialties and willbe supervised by a specialised tutor in a pre-selected,highly esteemed academic training centre in USA.The programmes are aimed at residents in their 3 rd , 4 th or5 th year of training.These scholarships are kindly supported by the MemorialSloan-Kettering Cancer Centre (MSKCC) and the UniversityHospitals of Cleveland/Case Western Reserve School ofMedicine - Department of Radiology.Topics and training centres• Oncologic Imaging at MSKCC in New York• Advanced Structural and Functional Imaging atCase Western Reserve University in ClevelandNumber of available scholarshipsDuring 2011 three scholarships are available, two on oncologicimaging at MSKCC (spring and autumn) and oneat Case Western Reserve University (autumn).Eligibility1. These scholarships apply to residents in their 3 rd , 4 thor 5 th year of training in radiology who desire to get thebenefit of a mentored modular training of a specificsubspecialised topic in radiology.2. Fulfilment of the training curriculum from at least thefirst two years of residency is required, verified by thehead of the department. Competence in producing aradiological report and communicating with cliniciansand patients is appreciated, as well as knowledge ofthe principles of administration and management appliedto a clinical department with multi-disciplinarystaff and high-cost equipment.3. Previous exposure in the chosen field of interest, includingbasic knowledge of imaging methods, indicationsfor imaging and clinical expectations, is advantageous.4. Applicants must be proficient in English.5. ESR membership fees for 2011 must be settled.Duration of scholarshipsand fundingThe scholarships will start in the second half of the yearand will last for three months. The successful applicantwill receive a grant covering travel, accommodation andsubsistence costs. The training is offered for free. Thescholar is responsible for his/her own health and personalinsurance.Programme structureThe programme offers structured modular experience atQueen Elizabeth Hospital in the branch of cross-sectionalimaging in which the scholar is specialising. This willinclude joining Birmingham experts in supervision andreporting, participating in Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT)meetings with clinicians and pathologists, attendingQuality Assurance, Audit and Clinical Governance Meetingswith radiologists and radiographers.
