This book is designed as a guide to enable you to start work quickly and safely. DAILY SAFETY CHECK LISTBefore use each day and at the beginning of each shift the aerialplatform shall be given a visual inspection and functional testincluding, but not limited to, the following:1) Read and fully understand Operating and Safety Manual.2) Check safety belts and hard hats.3) Check all decals and placards to see if in place and legible.4) Check platform is securely fastened to platform support.5) Check wheels and tyres. (75 PSI).6) Check outriggers (if applicable) for condition, microswitchoperation and security.7) Check batteries for condition, cleanliness, connections andelectrolyte levels.8) Check engine oil, fuel and coolant levels (if applicable).9) Check installation of all guards, covers and boom clamps.10) Check for loose, missing or damaged parts.11) Check all hydraulic hoses and electrical cables and wiring.12) Check hydraulic, fuel and air systems for leaks.13) Do not exceed rated platform capacity 265 lbs (120kgs).14) Check foot pedal for proper operation (if applicable).15) Check all operating emergency controls – Select an areafree from obstructions and hazards. Exercise extremecaution throughout the checking procedure especiallywhen checking brakes.(if applicable)16) Check operation of emergency hand pump.17) Check brakes and all lights.18) Check tilt sensor/alarm horn and beacons (if fitted).19) Check high engine and/or high drive limit switches.20) Check and refer to Operating and Safety Manual for furtherdaily/periodic checks and inspections.SETTING UP PROCEDURESas, but not limited to, power cables, telephone lines, drains,man-hole covers, etc.4) If the load bearing capacity of the ground is in any doubtthe machine must not be used.5) APPLY HANDBRAKE; and/or chock wheels and cordon offarea using appropriate cones, barriers and flags.6) Release boom travelling clamp. (if applicable)7) Check all red emergency stops are not engaged i.e. fully out.8) Check base is level using spirit level mounted on machinechassis.9) Leave ground control key in centre “OFF” position untiljacks are deployed. Turning this key to “Platform” positionwill cause the Klaxon to sound, as the outriggers will detectthat the jacks are not in contact with the ground.10 All four outrigger beams must be fully extended andretaining pins engaged (dropped) and all jack feet screwedhard down onto a firm, level surface.11) To operate the booms from the ground turn the key switchselector at the ground control station to ground, i.e. fullydown. Depress and hold green power button and selectappropriate control lever. Note: if no power is availablecheck each retaining pin has engaged (dropped) and eachjack foot is screwed hard down onto a firm, level surface.12) To operate the booms from the platform turn the key switchselector at the ground control station to platform i.e. fully up.Note: If alarm sounds return key to centre off position andcheck each retaining pin has engaged (dropped) and eachjack foot is screwed hard down onto a firm, level surface.13) Always lower booms fully before adjusting, raising,retracting or moving the outriggers in any way.14) Never alter, modify or block any of the safety circuits on theNiftylift.GROUND CONTROL OPERATIONFAILURE TO DEPLOY THE OUTRIGGERS CORRECTLYCOULD RESULT IN DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY.ALL MODELS1) Read and fully comply with all safety precautions andoperating instructions in the Operating and Safety manualand the warning decals on the machine.2) Position Niftylift on firm, level ground. NEVER work withbase across or adjacent to any slope.3) Use the manual jacks to level the base of the machine, ifnecessary using suitable load bearing pads to support thedownhill jacks. A slope of up to 12 degrees can beaccommodated in this fashion. Do not elevate theplatform unless the base can be corrected to within 3degrees of level.4) Position Niftylift, bearing in mind range of boom movementso that any overhead obstruction or possible hazards suchALL MODELSALWAYS ALLOW THE ENGINETO WARM UP BEFORE OPERATING.1) Ensure all red emergency stops are out.2) Turn key switch at ground control station to ground (i.e.fully down).3) Battery electric models go to step 10).DIESEL ENGINE OR BI ENERGY MODELS4) Turn duty selector in platform to BATT (Battery) or ENG(Engine).5) If BATT (Battery) is selected go to step 10).6) If ENG (Engine) is selected go to step 8). for a COLDENGINE or step 9). for a WARM ENGINE.7) COLD ENGINE turn the main engine ignition switch(located beneath the front cover) through ON to GL. This1


engages the glow plug pre-heat system. Hold for 3-5seconds then turn key fully to ST (start) position and theengine will fire.8) WARM ENGINE turn the main engine ignition switch(located beneath the front cover) through ON to ST (start)position and the engine will fire.PLATFORM CONTROL OPERATIONPETROL (GASOLINE) ENGINE OR PETROL(GASOLINE)/ELECTRIC MODELS4) Turn duty selector in platform to BATT (Battery) orENG (Engine).5) If BATT (Battery) is selected go to Step 10).6) If ENG (Engine) is selected go to Step 8). for a COLDENGINE or Step 9). for a WARM ENGINE..7) COLD ENGINE turn the engine fuel tap on and engagethe choke lever. Turn the main engine ignition throughON to ST (Start) and the engine will fire. Return thechoke lever to its normal running position after the engineis started.8) WARM ENGINE turn the engine fuel tap on and turn themain engine ignition through ON to ST (start) position andthe engine will fire.ALL MODELS9) Push and hold green power button.10) Select function and operate hand levers in full accordancewith manufacturers Operating and Safety Manual.11) To return control to platform turn key fully clockwise toup position.12) When not in use return machine to stowed position, fullyraise and stow all outriggers, turn key to centre off position,remove key and chock wheels.EMERGENCY PROCEDURES13) Push in red emergency stop to shut down all functions.14) Lower using emergency hand pump and hand lever control.BOOM FUNCTIONSA) Push and hold green “Power Control” button.P14926/0011 2 3B) Select lever 1, 2, or 3 for desired function.1 Operates Lower Boom UP for up DOWN for down.2 Operates Upper Boom UP for up DOWN for down.3 Operates Swing UP for right DOWN for left.Always ensure the aerial platform is on a firm level surfaceand the area is free of any overhead obstructions.Engaging the RED Emergency stop BUTTON will shutdown the engine and the electric circuit preventingoperation of any function.NEVER START THE NIFTYLIFT IF YOU SMELL PETROL(GASOLINE), LIQUID PROPANE OR DIESEL. THESEFUELS ARE FLAMMABLE.BEFORE OPERATING THE NIFTYLIFT ENSURE THATEACH OPERATOR HAS READ AND FULLYUNDERSTOOD THE OPERATING MANUAL. FAILURE TODO SO MAY RESULT IN DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY.PLATFORM CONTROLSALL MODELS1) Ensure all red emergency stops are out.2) Turn key switch at ground control station fully up toplatform position.3) Ensure selector hand valve (if applicable) is turned toplatform position i.e. fully up.4) Battery electric models go to step 10).DIESEL ENGINE OR BI ENERGY MODELS ONLY5) Turn duty selector in platform to BATT (Battery) orENG (Engine).6) If BATT (Battery) is selected go to Step 10).7) If ENG (Engine) is selected go to Step 8) for cold engine orStep 9) for a warm engine.8) COLD ENGINE Turn the main engine ignition switch (locatedbeneath the front cover) through ON to GL, this engages theglow plug pre-heat system. Turn the main engine2


ignition through ON to ST (Start) and the engine will fire.Return the choke lever to its normal running position afterthe engine is started.9) WARM ENGINE Ensure the main engine ignition switch isON. Turn key switch at groundcontrol to centre off position, remove key and chock wheels.PLATFORM PUSHBUTTONCONTROLS STATION(BI-ENERGY MODEL SHOWN)BOOM FUNCTIONS1 2 3Select lever 1, 2, or 3 for desired function.1 Operates Lower Boom UP for up DOWN for down.2 Operates Upper Boom UP for up DOWN for down.3 Operates Swing UP for right DOWN for left.STARTING THE ENGINEFROM THE PLATFORMP14926/001B) Ensure that all EMERGENCY STOPS are not engaged (i.e.must be fully out).C) Ensure the key switch selector located at the groundcontrol station is turned to platform (i.e. fully up).D) Ensure the duty selector in the platform is in the ENG(Engine) position.E) Push the BLACK start button located behind the main pushbutton control station and the engine will now fire up.F) To shut down the engine from the platform simply turn theduty selector to OFF or BATT (Battery) or in an emergencydepress the RED Emergency stop button.POWER SYSTEM CHANGEOVERENGINE TO BATTERY1) Engage any RED Emergency Stop button to shut downthe engine.2) Re-set RED Emergency Stop button.3) Turn the duty selector in the platform to BATT (Battery).BATTERY TO ENGINE1) Ensure all RED Emergency Stops are out.2) Ensure main engine ignition switch located at the ground isturned to ON.3) Turn the duty selector in the platform to ENG (Engine).4) Push the BLACK START button located behind the mainpush button control station and the engine will fire.PETROL (GASOLINE) TO GAS1) Locate petrol shut-off valve on carburettor, and turn petrolto OFF position.2) Run engine until all of the Petrol (Gasoline) is exhausted, i.e.engine stops.3) Open valve on gas bottle, introducing supply to the vapouriser.4) Turn engine over until it fires, allow vapouriser to achieverunning temperature before using machine. If engine runserratically, check that all petrol has been used from bowl.GAS TO PETROL (GASOLINE)1) Turn gas off by shutting valve on the bottle – ensure that itis fully closed.2) Open fuel shut-off valve on engine carburettor, and allow itto fill with petrol.3) Turn engine over until it fires.BOOM CONTROLSNEVER START THE NIFTYLIFT IF YOU CAN SMELLPETROL (GASOLINE), LIQUID PROPANE OR DIESEL.THESE FUELS ARE HIGHLY FLAMMABLE.****FOR COLD START PROCEDURESSEE PLATFORM CONTOL OPERATION: STEP 8A) Ensure main engine ignition located below front cover isturned to ON position.DO NOT OPERATE THE NIFTYLIFT WHILST ELEVATEDUNLESS ON A FIRM, LEVEL SURFACE FREE FROM ANYPOSSIBLE OBSTRUCTIONS OR HAZARDS BOTH ATGROUND LEVEL AND OVERHEAD.3


IF ALARM SOUNDS – DESCEND IMMEDIATELY.1) Never exceed the maximum platform capacity of265lbs (120kgs).2) Check below, above and around platform for anyobstruction or hazards before operating any function.3) Depress the green power button or the foot switch locatedin the platform floor (if applicable).4) Select handlever controls marked 1, 2, 3.Control 1 Operates lower boomUP for upDOWN for downControl 2 Operates upper boomUP for upDOWN for downControl 3 Operates swingUP for rightDOWN for leftTHIS MACHINE IS NOT ELECTRICALLY INSULATED. DONOT WORK WITHIN 3M (10FT) OF OVERHEAD CABLESEXCEEDING 415 VOLTS.TOWING6) Raise the jockey wheel to its stowed position and securefor transit.DE-COUPLING INSTRUCTIONS1) Apply trailer handbrake and/or chock wheels.2) Lower the jockey wheel to the ground. Disconnect thebreakaway cable/chain and lighting plug.3) Operate the handle by depressing the trigger and manuallylift the coupling head clear of the towing ball or screw downthe telescopic jockey wheel to achieve the same effect.HANDBRAKE OPERATION (IF APPLICABLE)1) To operate the trailer parking brakes pull the handbrakelever upwards and backwards. The spring loadedmechanism will engage and stay in the operated positionuntil re-set.2) To disengage the parking brakes, firmly grasp thehandbrake lever and pull upwards. Depress the ratchetrelease button in the end of the handbrake lever and returnthe lever to the horizontal position. Care should be takenwhen operating the handbrake lever due to the forcesinvolved in engaging the ratchet mechanism.EMERGENCY CONTROLSGENERALTHE MAXIMUM TOWING SPEED OF A NIFTYLIFT IS 45MPH (72 KMPH) WITH A VEHICLE THAT COMPLIESWITH ALL ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATIONS. SPEEDINGMAY RESULT IN DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY.It is recommended that the maximum towing speed of 45mph(72kmph) be adhered to for the greatest safety. In other thanperfect conditions it is sensible to further reduce your speed inorder to ensure full control over your vehicle and trailer. Theimportance of the suitability of your towing vehicle must bestressed. The manufacturers’ details concerning each model willgive you recommended Gross Vehicle Weights (GVW) or GrossTrain Weights (GTW) neither of which should be exceeded.POSITION TOWING VEHICLE AND TRAILERON LEVEL GROUND BEFORE ATTEMPTINGTO COUPLE/DE-COUPLE.COUPLING INSTRUCTIONS1) Depress the trigger on the lever mechanism and lift thehandle upwards and forward.2) Place the unlocked coupling head onto the towing ball andapply slight downward pressure. The head will automaticallylock onto the ball.3) Ensure that the trigger has returned to its free positionbefore attempting to tow, and that the coupling head issecurely on the towing ball.4) Connect the breakaway cable/chain to the towing vehiclehitch – not to the tow ball itself.5) Connect the lighting plug to the vehicle and check thelight functions.CHECKING THE OPERATION OF THE EMERGENCYCONTROLS EVERY DAY AND/OR BEFORE EACH SHIFTIS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE OPERATORS DUTIES.The operator and all ground personnel must be thoroughly familiarwith the location and operation of the EMERGENCY CONTROLS.IN THE EVENT OF AN INCAPACITATED OPERATOR.Turn key switch selector at ground control station to ground (i.e.fully down). Lower on ground controls as detailed in section:Ground Control Operation.IN THE EVENT OF MACHINE FAILURE.Lower platform using handlever controls in platform or at groundcontrol station and simultaneously operate the handpump. Thisoperation can be completed from either the cage or base controls.TO ROTATE PLATFORM IN AN EMERGENCY.Fit 1/2 inch drive socket on to end of swing worm gear andcrank round manually.4
