When I graduated in June 1971, I was also commissioned as a second lieutenantin the Air Force. Upon graduation, I received an academic scholarship from the Air Forcethat allowed me to stay at RPI for the next year and get a Master <strong>of</strong> Science degree inmanagement. At my first duty station, Griffiss AFB, in Rome New York, I received aMaster <strong>of</strong> Science degree in system management from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> SouthernCalifornia. I was assigned to the Air Force Academy in 1979. In 1981 the Academysponsored me for my doctoral degree. I completed my PhD in accounting at the<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Washington.In addition to my assignment to the faculty at the Air Force Academy, I served as anaeronautical engineer for the Rome Air Development Center. I was chief <strong>of</strong> the programs<strong>of</strong>fice at the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC), which was responsible for the flighttest programs at the Center. In 1988 I was selected as a speechwriter in the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> theSecretary and Deputy Secretary <strong>of</strong> Defense. Because my background was inmanagement, I wrote mostly for the Deputy Secretary whose main responsibilities are themanagement <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Defense where I worked for a little more than 3 years.I spent most <strong>of</strong> that time working for Secretary <strong>of</strong> Defense Dick Cheney and DeputySecretary Don Atwood. I retired from the Air Force in 1991.From 1991 to 1996 I was on the accounting faculty at George Mason <strong>University</strong>. I servedas the director <strong>of</strong> the graduate accounting and tax programs for over two years. I joined<strong>UMUC</strong> in 1996 as a program director in what is now the Master <strong>of</strong> Science inmanagement program. In January 2005 I became chair <strong>of</strong> the Business and ExecutivePrograms department.Publications• November-December 2004: The Ultimate Business Makeover sponsored by theGovernor's Office <strong>of</strong> Minority Affairs, State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong>.
