ABOUT THE PEER EDUCATOR’S CURRICULUMAdherence to Treatment for HIV – A Curriculum for PeerEducators has been developed for training people living with HIV/AIDS as peer treatment educators and build their capacity to reachout to their peers with information on living healthy with HIV, witha special focus on antiretroviral therapy (ART), adherence to ART,positive living and prevention among HIV positive people. “HIVTreatment Education” empowers people living with HIV/AIDS bymaking them understand the role of ART in leading a healthy lifeso they can adhere successfully to their ART regimen and followupvisits to clinic and laboratory. This prevents development ofresistance by HIV virus against ART and ensures success ofantiretroviral therapy both for the individual and for the nationalART roll out program.The peer educators can use the knowledge and skills that theygain from this training to educate their peers, either through informalone-on-one or through small group contacts. The basic premisebehind peer education is that people living with HIV are more likelyto listen to and be influenced by others living with the samecondition.Written in a simple, non-technical language, this curriculum can beused with people in a training setting of groups of 15-25 participants.The training curriculum has been designed in such a way so as toprovide ample opportunities for participants to interact in asupportive environment through a variety of exercises and activities.The curriculum can be used as a whole or in parts, but for sake ofcompleteness and to ensure quality of peer education it is crucialthat all the sessions be covered adequately and the suggestedduration for each session adhered to.The peer educator’s curriculum consists of a ‘<strong>Facilitator</strong> <strong>Guide</strong>’ and a‘Participant Manual’. The facilitator’s should refer to both the <strong>Facilitator</strong><strong>Guide</strong> and the Participant Manual. A copy of the Participant Manualshould be given to participants in the training.1
