The potential dangerof damage and even completedestruction posed to valuable electroniccomponents or even completeproduction systems, computersystems or communication systemsby sudden overvoltage from the grid,or direct lightning strikes has mobilizednot just insurance companies.Well-advised users also know theimportance of protecting their electricaldevices, plants and systems bothsuffi ciently and reliably against thisdanger, and the overall advantage ofincreasing their system availability.Overvoltage protection modulesOvervoltage protection modulescome in three type categories whichdesignate their capacity to absorbovervoltage energy. Type 1 arresterscan divert the largest amount ofenergy to ground (PE). The idealinstallation location for these devicesis at the building’s main supply. Inthis confi guration the impulse energyis considerably weakened, if it movesdownstream into the installation. wietap IECOvervoltage protectionThe zone concept for lightning protectionThe zone concept for lightningprotection enables planners, buildersand owners to plan, implementand monitor protective measures.All relevant devices, plants and systemscan thus be protected reliablyat economically justifi able costs..Direct or close-up lightningstrikes are lightning strikes into thelightning protection system of a building,in close proximity to it, or intothe electrically conductive systemsimplemented in the building (e.g. lowvoltagesupply,telecommunications,control lines. (Fig. 1)Remote lightning strikes are lightningstrikes that occur far away fromthe object to be protected as wellas lightning strikes into the mediumvoltage overhead system or in closeproximity to it, or lightning dischargefrom cloud to cloud (Fig. 1: cases2a, 2b and 2c).In addition to a lightning protectionsystem in the building, additionalmeasures for an overvoltage protectionof electrical and electronicsystems are required in order tosafeguard the continuous availabilityof complex power engineeringand IT systems even in the case of adirect lightning strike. It is importantto consider all the causes for overvoltages.The zone concept for lightning protectionas described in IEC 62305-4(DIN EN 62305-4, DIN 0185-305-4)applies accordingly (Fig. 3).
