Since thesummer <strong>newsletter</strong> there has been a greatdeal of activity on the construction of theMechanical Biological Treatment (MBT)facility at the Brookhurst Wood site. Wewant to keep all neighbours informed ofthe latest progress. Below you will findthe latest on recent works and communityengagement.Since construction of the MBT started in June 2010more than 100 community visits and presentationshave taken place to over 1000 people, explaininghow waste is managed in West Sussex. The varietyof community groups interested in the subject ofwaste management is wide ranging; we haveengaged with all colleges in the County and the sitevisits have been of particular interest to studentsstudying Environmental Science, Geology and<strong>Winter</strong> <strong>2012</strong>Mechanical Biological Treatment facilityPhoto taken in Oct <strong>2012</strong>Countryside Management.The construction of the Mechanical BiologicalTreatment (MBT) facility is almost complete and thefacility will start to undergo the commissioningphase at the beginning of the New Year. The MBTwill sort, separate and treat West Sussex’s black bagwaste so that more waste can be recovered with theaim of diverting it away from landfill. The facility willbegin full operations in the summer 2013.Works on siteRecent site work has included:All the equipment in the Main Pre-treatmentbuilding has been installed. The Main Pretreatmentarea is where the waste will be sortedand separated.All six Anaerobic Digestion (AD) tanks have beeninsulated and the cladding is complete. Thepipe bridge which supports the pipes from theWet Pre-treatment building is nearingcompletion. These pipes will pump thebiodegradable waste into the AD tanks once ithas been through the sorting and separationprocess. The AD tanks will treat thebiodegradable waste (mainly food waste)and produce a biogas which will createelectricity and a Compost Like Output (CLO)which could be used for restoration on site.Much of the recent work has been the ongoinginstallation of electrical fittings and theinstallation of bio scrubbers for controlling airextraction.Anaerobic Digestion tanks – The cladding is completeInstallation of the pipe bridgeFor more information please call 01403 339169Email: brookhurst.wood@biffa.co.ukOr visit: www.biffa.co.uk/west_sussex
